Independence Day 2012 Most people in the United States celebrate the 4th of July, but do you know exactly why the holiday is so important to our country? In the years leading up to 1776, Great Britain kept trying to make the colonists follow more rules and pay higher taxes. People started getting mad and began making plans to make their own rules. They no longer wanted Great Britain to be able to tell them what to do, so they decided to tell Great Britain that they were becoming an independent country. The Congress met in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and appointed a committee to write a formal document that would tell Great Britain that the Americans had decided to govern themselves. They asked Thomas Jefferson to draft a document, so he worked for days, in absolute secret, until he had written a document that he thought said everything important that the committee had discussed. On June 28, 1776, the committee met to read Jefferson's draft. They revised the document and declared their independence on July 2, 1776. They officially adopted it on July 4, 1776. That is why we call it "Independence Day." The Declaration of Independence is more than just a piece of paper. It is a symbol of our country's independence and commitment to certain ideas. The signers of the Declaration of Independence wanted the citizens of the United States to have a document that spelled out what was important to our leaders and citizens. They wanted us to be able to look at the Declaration of Independence and immediately think of the goals we should always be working for, and about the people who have fought so hard to make these ideas possible. The people who signed the Declaration risked being hanged for treason by the leaders in Great Britain. They had to be very brave to sign something that would be considered a crime! So every time we look at the Declaration of Independence and celebrate July 4th, we should think about all of the effort and ideas that went into the document, and about the courage it took for these people to stand up for what they knew was right -- independence! The Villages of Springhurst July 2012 Volume 2, Issue 7, Page 4 “No Long Breath Holding” at the Pool Maybe you have seen these signs at the Springhurst pool. Practicing holding the breath has been a common swimming pool game for years, and breath holding was part of the training regime for competitive swimmers even before there were swimming pools! This article will help explain the reasons for “no long breath holding”. Prolonged swimming underwater and breath holding is a dangerous practice that can lead to drowning. Kentuckiana Pool Management (KPM), the company that manages the Springhurst pool and works very hard to keep all the swimmers safe, has recognized this dangerous practice and posted signs prohibiting these activities. To understand why breath holding poses a threat, it is necessary to know something about human respiration. A high level of carbon dioxide in the blood is what triggers air hunger. Many times swimmers who hold their breath actually hyperventilate before going under, artificially lowering the level of carbon dioxide in their bloodstream. When they are actually starving for oxygen, their bodies do not know it because their carbon dioxide levels are normal. Oxygen-starved, they may black out and drown before anyone realizes what is happening. This phenomenon is sometimes known as shallow water blackout. Other factors make breath holding even more dangerous. 1. An unconscious swimmer may make voluntary movements, preventing observers from realizing that the swimmer is in trouble. 2. Low levels of oxygen in the blood may trigger release of endorphins, so the swimmer experiences a sense of euphoria rather than danger. 3. Breath-holders are likely to be experienced, adept swimmers and as such may not be as closely watched by lifeguards as beginning swimmers. Any pool guest or pass holder must be accompanied by a member of the resident’s household to enter the pool. Please remember that a “household member” is a spouse, child, or other family member whose legal residence is the member’s home. An adult child who does not reside in the home is not a household member. If a resident misuses a pool card in this or any other capacity, the board of directors maintains the right to suspend that member's family pool privileges for the remainder of the season.
