Leaders In Emergency Care Banquet
San Antonio AirLIFE hosted its annual "Leaders in
Emergency Care" recognition dinner on August 10,
2012 at the Crowne Plaza Riverwalk Hotel. The dinner

With KSAT 12's Jennifer Dodd as the emcee for the
event, there were over 120 attendees for the annual
Mistress of Ceremonies Jennifer

AirLIFE Trains with Fugitive Task Force
Recently, San Antonio AirLIFE was asked to conduct a
"Landing Zone" training class with the regional Lone Star
Fugitive Task Force. "The purpose of the training was to
assist the multi-agency team in preparing for the landing
of an AirLIFE helicopter in case someone is injured while
serving a warrant or apprehending a fugitive", stated
Director of Business Development Steve Soliz.
After a one-hour classroom lesson, the team (which is
comprised of local police officers, Sheriff's deputies, U.S.
Marshals, and DEA Agents) practiced dispatching an
aircraft and communicating via hand-held radios to direct
the helicopter to a suitable landing zone in an open field. After the aircraft landed, the
AirLIFE medical crew performed a quick assessment on the "patient" and with the
assistance of Task Force personnel, carried the victim to the aircraft and safely loaded the
patient.
"This is one of our many free c ommunity outreach educational offerings that we conduct on
a weekly basis for community fire departments and law enforcement agencies", shared
AirLIFE CEO Shawn Salter, "we believe it is our responsibility to train the people that utilize
our services to ensure that everyone is knowledgeable of the hazards regarding helicopter
utilization in those dynamic environments."
New Medical Device is Implemented
AirLIFE is happy to announce the implementation of the LUCAS 2 chest compression
system, an automated, battery-powered device that is designed to give consistent,
uninterrupted compressions to victims in cardiac arrest. This automated CPR device has
demonstrated improved outcomes for those suffering from cardiac arrest.
Since performing manual chest compressions, according to the American Heart Association
guidelines is both difficult and physically demanding, the LUCAS 2 device is designed to
deliver uninterrupted compressions at a consistent rate and depth (100 compressions per
minute, depth 1.5 to 2 inches) to facilitate the return of spontaneous circulation in cardiac
arrest patients.
"We have found uninterrupted compressions is the primary means of improving survival.
Currently, compressions are more important than airway management (ventilation). The
addition of the LUCAS 2 to our program should allow us to improve our compression quality

and hopefully our patient survivability outcomes" stated AirLIFE Medical Director Craig
Manifold, D.O..
"Utilizing this device in-flight benefits the patient by enabling us to deliver
precise, consistent chest compressions while our medical crews remain safely secured in their
seats" noted AirLIFE Chief Flight Nurse Stacy Gregory. "We can apply this device in approximately
30 seconds" added Mrs. Gregory.
"We have been able to add additional elements to our clinical practice thanks to the support of Dr.
Manifold and our Board of Directors" mentioned AirLIFE CEO Shawn Salter, "Our primary focus
has always been to provide the best care in the safest environment for patients and our
employees."
