Declaring Independence
Sophia Snow Place has its
roots in the charitable spirit
of the nineteenth-century
Boston. In 1856, a group of
civic-minded citizens raised
money to operate and
maintain the Roxbury Home
for Aged Women. In 1962,
after a century of care, the
home was relocated and
renamed Sophia Snow House,
in honor of Sophia Snow.
Today, the parent company,
the Roxbury Home for Aged
Women, has affiliated
organizations: Snow House &
Snow Place. These non-profit
organizations continue their
mission to provide comfort,
companionship and security
in a warm, homelike
environment for seniors.
On July 4, America celebrates Independence Day,
commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of
Independence and the United States’ separation from
Great Britian. Technically the separation of America’s
thirteen colonies from Great Britain occurred on July 2,
1776, after the Second Continental Congress voted for
independence. Two days later the Declaration of
Independence was approved. Ironically, Thomas
Jefferson, the author of the Declaration of Independence,
said to his wife, “The second day of July 1776 will be the
most memorable epoch in the history of America.” He
was just two days off.
Join us in the Great Room for an afternoon of
patriotism, music, refreshments & more while we
celebrate Independence Day! All are encouraged to

Modern Marvels:
Independence Day
Beyond the barbecues and
fireworks, this documentary delves
into the history and traditions of
the Fourth of July. The occasion
dates back to America's first
Independence Day celebration,
which took place after the
Declaration of Independence was
read in Philadelphia in 1776.
Although parties have taken place
every year since, July 4 wasn't
declared a holiday until 1941. Learn
more facts and see footage from
festivities around the country.

Join Author Donald L. Brown as he comes to
share his story from his memoir,
“The Morphine Dream”
At age thirty six, Donald L. Brown has resigned himself to being a “complete
loser.” A high-school dropout and a failed professional ball player, he was now
a laborer. When severely injured in an industrial accident, he was told he
would never walk again. His second marriage crumbled and his wife left him.
He was considering suicide as his remaining option.
But Brown had a dream while on morphine for the pain from the accident. He
imagined himself graduating from Harvard Law School, and walking across
America. Of course, everyone told him he was crazy, but he took the dream to
heart nonetheless.
“The Morphine Dream” is Brown’s intriguing tale of his long walk – both
physical and metaphorical- to achieving his goals. But this is not just the
conventional story of a man who defeated unsurmountable odds.
Come and listen to an amazing story of one man’s loss and gain, hope, and the
revealing of an unexpected calling.

Hydration Workshop
The new summer season is upon us, and the sunny days and warm weather have
drawn many to spend their time outdoors. But seniors need to take special
precautions to make sure their enjoyment of summer is not eclipsed by the pain of
sunburn or the harmful effects of dehydration and heat illness. Physical changes
that come with aging make older adults more vulnerable to summer’s heat and
humidity.
Join speaker Laurie Blake from Home Instead Senior Care for a fun and
interactive workshop on summer safety and hydration for seniors.

Learn about our CarTrade Program
 trade your car in for rides!
• Your car means independence. But what if you haven’t actually driven in many
months or no longer have the ability to drive safely?
• The reassurance of knowing your car is in the driveway can become expensive.
Insurance alone costs several hundred dollars a year, and unlike a home, an
automobile depreciates in value.
• So every day your car sits in the driveway, it’s worth less.
Meet ITN’s Executive Director – Jean Patel Bushnell and learn more about the value of the
Independent Transportation Network for you and your
community.
