G
ood afternoon and
welcome to Motspur
Park for today’s FA
Youth Cup Third Round
tie against Mansfield
Town.
Fulham’s best FA Youth Cup campaign
came just three seasons ago when the
Whites reached the Final for the first
time, only to lose narrowly to Chelsea
over two legs. Last season we exited in
Round Four with Reading gaining a 3-1
win at Motspur Park after Bury were
beaten 4-2 at Motspur Park at this stage
of the competition.
The current campaign has thus far
been a mixed one for our Under-18s but
they did win 2-0 against Swansea City
at Motspur last weekend. Jon Dagur
Thorsteinsson and Jayden Harris were
the men on target.
As a League Two outfit Mansfield
came into this season’s competition
at the First Round stage where they
defeated Northern Premier League outfit
Bedworth United 3-0 away from home.
In Round Two they beat local rivals
Dunkirk of the East Midlands League 5-2
at the One Call Stadium. Last season the
Stags exited in Round Three after being
beaten 5-1 at home by Sunderland.
Mansfield’s Under-18s play in the EFL
North East Youth Alliance and are the
current champions. They’re amongst the
leaders once again but suffered a blow
two weeks ago when they lost 1-0 at
home to York City. This followed a run of
four successive wins including their two
FA Youth Cup successes. Last weekend
they won 3-0 at Bradford City.
Two goalkeepers have seen FA Youth
Cup action to date. Sam Wilson, who
enjoyed an outstanding 2015/16 season,
was between the posts against Bedworth
but Xavier Sundby played in Round
Two. At right-back was Teddy Bloor. On
the left side is Henri Wilder who was
snapped up this summer following his
release by Brighton & Hove Albion.
Kane Baldwin can be found at the
heart of the Stags’ defence alongside
skipper Morgan Ratcliffe who was an
important part of last season’s titlewinning side. Australian John Fragakis
www.fulhamfc.com
is a central defender signed from
Shrewsbury Town this summer. ExBarnsley man Aiden Walker can operate
as a central defender or at right-back.
Midfielder Cain Smith was on target
against Bedworth. He is a former West
Bromwich Albion academy player.
Kieran Harrison operates in a central
midfield role along with Cameron
Healey who was previously at Walsall.
Attacking midfielder Alistair Smith
bagged a brace against Dunkirk. He
joined the club at 16 having been with
Hull City.
Zayn Hakeem went one better that
Smith, netting a hat-trick in the win of
Dunkirk. He can operate as a winger or
as a striker. Another wideman is Surafel
Behailu who normally operates on the
left side. Striker Devante Reittie netted
from long range in last season’s FA Youth
Cup defeat to Sunderland, while Nyle
Blake was a First Round scorer against
Bedworth.
Our next Under-18 action is on
Saturday 7th January 2017 (11am) when
Reading are the visitors to Motspur Park.
