Sodium Iodide Detector Reconfiguration
Purpose:
This Temporary Operational Safety Procedure (TOSP) follows the SLAC TN-82-2
Surface Polishing Process for NaI Crystals, with substitution of benzene to the less toxic
solvent toluene for cleaning.
Background:
As discussed in the referenced SLAC document, the NaI crystals have suffered a bit of
hydration of the crystal during the 25 years of use, so a re-polishing of the flat faces of
the crystals is needed.
Phase I of the JLab project involved removing the crystals from a Brookhaven detector
and storing in inertial environment. Phase I has been completed.
This phase (Phase II) will address the polishing and cleaning procedures.

The polishing process is described
http://www.slac.stanford.edu/cgi-wrap/getdoc/slac-tn-82-002.pdf and is attached to this
TOSP.
Authority and Responsibility:
Line Management: JP Chen
Alexandre Camsonne
Required Equipment:
• Glove box for work on crystal polishing
• Glove bags EW-04408-32
• HEPA filter 4399K41
• Spilfyter Chemical Classifier strips – Test #5 on strip serves as a qualitative test
for iodine vapor
• Impulse bag heat sealer
• Polyethylene bag
• Ziploc bag
• Molecular sieve dessicant
• 240 liter liquid nitrogen dewar
• Polyvinyl alcohol gloves
• Oxygen monitor
• Explosimeter
Hazards Analysis:
1. ODH: asphyxiation and cold burns
a. Iodine crystals have to be kept dry
b. Glove box used will be inerted with nitrogen from a portable liquid dewar
2. Exposure to Iodine/Thallium: Sodium iodide crystals are not in and of themselves
hazardous (See attached MSDS). However, in an atmosphere that is not
maintained at less than 6 % relative humidity, the crystals will absorb water and
give off iodine.
Polishing of the crystal will generate sodium iodide salt dust.
Acute Effects of iodine exposure:
Inhalation causes eye and nose irritation and tightness in the chest. Skin contact
causes burns, irritation, and rash.
Chronic Effects of iodine exposure:
Iodism may result from chronic iodide overdoses. Signs and symptoms of iodism
include : excess salivation, sneezing, conjunctivitis, headache, fever, laryngitis,
bronchitis, stomatitis, and parotitis (iodine mumps). Prolonged or repeated skin
exposure may cause skin rashes.
TOSP: Sodium Iodide detector reconfiguration for Coulomb Sum Rule Experiment
Skin Contact:
Contact with sodium iodide produces irritation. Symptoms include redness,
itching, and pain.
Eye Contact:
Exposure to iodine vapor at a concentration of 1.6 ppm for just two minutes is
sufficient to cause eye irritation. The threshold for eye irritation is reported to be
0.2 ppm (2 mg/m3), which is significantly below the odor threshold (0.8 ppm, or 9
mg/m3).
Inhalation:
Inhalation of iodine vapor is extremely irritating to the respiratory tract, causing
tightness in the chest and sore throat. Iodine vapors increase airflow resistance in
the lungs. Inhalation may result in spasm, inflammation, and fluid accumulation
(edema) in the voice box, upper airways, and lungs. Lung edema may be delayed.
Symptoms may include coughing, wheezing, laryngitis, and shortness of breath.
Some individuals may develop hypersensitivity to inhaled iodine vapor.
Ingestion: iodism may result.
Exposure levels:
ACGIH: ceiling limit of 0.1 ppm
Thallium exposure: the crystals contain less than one percent thallium.
Acute effects of thallium exposure
Thallium is a poison. The acute oral LD50s of various thallium salts, expressed as
mg thallium/kg body weight, range between 15-50 mg/kg. Death results from
respiratory failure.
Chronic effects of thallium exposure
The most common sign of long-term human toxicity to thallium is alopecia. With
the exception of the axillary and facial hair, it begins approximately 10 days after
ingestion and progresses to complete hair loss in one month.
Other noted chronic effects include tiredness; weakness; nervousness; headache,
fatigue, limb pain, peripheral neuritis, joint pain, Central nervous System effects,
diarrhea, vomiting, liver and kidney damage.
Skin contact: Thallium can be absorbed through the skin to cause systemic
effects.
Eye contact: No observed effects
Inhalation: Thallium can be absorbed through the lungs to cause systemic effects.
Ingestion: Thallium is a poison.
Exposure limits:
TOSP: Sodium Iodide detector reconfiguration for Coulomb Sum Rule Experiment
ACGIH : The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists
(ACGIH) has assigned thallium threshold limit values (TLVs) of 0.1 mg/m3 as a
TWA for a normal 8-hour workday and a 40-hour workweek.
3. Exposure to Toluene: Toluene is a flammable liquid, with a flammable range of
1.1- 7%. Additionally, there are health effects:
Exposure to toluene can occur via inhalation, ingestion, and eye or skin contact.
* Signs and symptoms of exposure
1. Acute exposure: The signs and symptoms of acute exposure to toluene include
redness and inflammation of the eyes and eyelids, runny nose, scratchy throat,
fatigue, weakness, incoordination, confusion, headache, dizziness, and drowsiness.
2. Chronic exposure: The signs and symptoms of chronic exposure to toluene
include incoordination; tremors; impaired speech, vision, hearing, or memory;
nausea; lack of appetite; and defatting of the skin. The target organs are the liver,
the central nervous system, and kidney.
Toluene will absorb directly through intact skin. It is imperative to wear proper
skin protection such as gloves.
Exposure Limits
The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) has
assigned toluene threshold limit values (TLVs) of 50 ppm as a TWA for a normal
8-hour workday and a 40-hour workweek.
4. Ergonomic hazard for repetitive tasks in glove box
360 crystals will be polished mostly by hand. The ergonomic hazard is that of
repetitive trauma to the wrists.
5. Exposure to alumina:
Acute effects:
Eye contact: May irritate eyes.
Skin contact: Not absorbed through skin; may cause abrasions.
Inhalation: Acute: Coughing, shortness of breath.
Chronic effects: May affect breathing capacity.
TOSP: Sodium Iodide detector reconfiguration for Coulomb Sum Rule Experiment
The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (ACGIH) has
assigned alumina threshold limit values (TLVs) of 10 mg/m3 as a TWA for a
normal 8-hour workday and a 40-hour workweek.
Hazard Mitigation:
1. ODH
Glove box: The glove box has to be inerted with nitrogen; therefore it must remain
outside the dry room. An ODH assessment was performed by Mat Wright, Cryogenics
Group, to determine the amount of liquid nitrogen to be allowed inside Room 124 which
will keep the room at ODH 0 conditions:
The glove box door will need to be opened to transport crystal blocks in and out, to move
in/out supplies and waste material. The person to transport items in or out of the glove
box will need to have ODH training and wear a personal oxygen monitor on their
shoulder when the box is opened. Another person will assist by opening the door. This
person should stay behind the door to avoid the nitrogen environment of the glove box.
The duration of opening of the glove box door should be kept minimum. Opening the
glove box is limited to the frequency of door openings and duration. Duration of an
opening is limited to simply placing the crystals into the glove box. Ideally we would
like to load enough crystals for one-shift work and have the glove box remain closed until
the end of the shift to remove polish crystals and waste.
2. Exposure to Iodine/Thallium:
a. Clean room ventilation system vents has 10% fresh air intake.
b. Chemical classifier strips will also be used to monitor the Clean room for
iodine vapor.
c. Industrial hygiene air sampling for iodine and thallium will be performed
d. Grinding and polishing will be done in one side of the glove box which is
separated from the door side with a HEPA filtering wall to limit dust
spread.
TOSP: Sodium Iodide detector reconfiguration for Coulomb Sum Rule Experiment
e. The glove will be flushed with nitrogen with an exhaust line going to the
ventilation output, this exhaust line will go through an inline HEPA filter.
f. HEPA vacuum cleaner will be used to clean any dust making it out to the
door side.
3. Exposure to toluene:
a. The glove box will be continuously flushed with nitrogen with the exhaust
going through a filter and directed to the exhaust going outside to mitigate
the explosion hazard. The ventilation system vents has 10% fresh air
intake.
b. Industrial hygiene air sampling for toluene will be performed
c. The glove box has an air tight enclosure that can be secured to isolate the
crystals from the room in case of large toluene concentration.
d. The amount of toluene in the glove box is limited 60 mL to ensure that the
lower flammability limit of 1% is not reached. This will be used for
cleaning to wet a paper towel.
e. Polyvinyl alcohol gloves will be worn when handling toluene.
f. To ensure the glove box has no oxygen, an oxygen monitor will be used to
sample the glove box air from the nitrogen inlet before using toluene.
g. No electrical power inside the glove box when toluene is in use. The
power for the electric sander must be unplugged before using toluene.
h. Used material contains toluene will be stored in a sealed metal can. It will
be given to IH group (Jennifer Williams) for disposal at the end of the
shift.
4. Ergonomic Hazard
To mitigate the problem, the job will assessed by the Occupational Health
Physician to set up an ergonomic workstation.
Here are the recommendations by Dr. Chandler ( JLab Occupational Health
Physician )
The following controls will make the work safer, faster, and more pleasant:
•
•
Operators will intermittently lean their foreheads on the glove box wall. Areas of
contact should be padded with foam. I recommend an approximately 5 mm thick
sheet of closed cell foam. Such material is more hygienic than other options and
can be cleaned with ethanol or sprayed with disinfecting agents. Closed cell foam
is also extremely durable and is comfortable because skin and hair slide over it
easily.
Some operators will have a pressure point on the forearms at the metal ring
opening to the glove. This area should be padded. Again, I recommend a very
thin sheet of closed cell foam. It might be difficult to attach foam to the metal
ring. If so, a sheet of foam could be inserted along with the arm without attaching
the foam to the ring.

•
Inside the box, forearm support should be constructed. This will prevent shoulder
and upper back fatigue. A commercial microscope support can be clamped to the
table inside the box. This can be obtained from www.alimed.com. Instead, I
prefer a tower of closed cell foam because it is more versatile. Blocks of such
foam are inexpensive and can be purchased in various sizes from canoe and kayak
stores such as Appomattox River Company, 890-0500, near Kiln Creek. Blocks
can be glued together to create a tower which can then be shaped by shaving or
sanding.
Low back fatigue can be reduced by using a leaning stool such as The Support
Stand, model # ELSS-3548 from T&S Equipment Company, 800-348-0860.
If a leaning stool is not used, anti-fatigue matting should be considered. This can
also be ordered from www.alimed.com.
Job rotation should also be considered. This would involve using as many people
as possible for the project, with frequent alternation between crystal polishing and
other activities. This would add variety to each person's work and thereby reduce
physical stress created by crystal polishing.
All above recommendations will be implemented. Work will be organized in shifts of 2-3
workers with a break every two hours.
5. Exposure to Alumina
a. All work will be performed inside a glove box
b. Air exhausted from the glove box will pass through a HEPA filter

All the required polishing supplies will be moved in the glove box: sand paper,
alumina 0.3 um, microcloth, extended oil, toluene, waste container.
One package of crystals (approx. 5 crystals) will be moved into the glove box at
the beginning of the shift by a shift supervisor.
The glove box is closed and flushed with nitrogen to reduce the humidity level to
< 6 %. The humidity level will be monitored continuously.
The package consisting of sealed polyethylene bags containing the crystals and
some dessicant and zip loc type bags also containing dessicant as additional
protection.
For the crystal in the worse shape an electric sander will be used to remove large
quantities of salt. The crystal is then dry-grinded by hand using the 3/0 and 4/0
emery paper. Kimwipe paper will used to wipe the sand off the crystals. Then the
medium polish is done using 0.3 um alumina with 7 to 10 drops of oil extender.
Next step will be to use toluene to clean the crystal face. Before using toluene,
electric power for the electric sander will be unplugged. Oxygen level in the glove
box will be checked. Crystal face will then be cleaned with toluene on a cotton
ball or Kimwipe paper. The used cotton ball or Kimwipe will be stored in a metal
can and sealed. Final polishing is done using a dry microcloth.
Once polished, the used supplies are put into a Ziploc bag to be discarded. The
crystal and the used supplies will be taken out the polishing side through the
filtering wall to the door side for testing and discarding. Any released dust will be
immediately vacuumed using a HEPA vaccum cleaner.
The block will be rewrapped if necessary in a new layer of millipore paper and
aluminized mylar.
Once done the block will be quickly tested in the dark box also located in the
glove box.
After check out the crystal will be repacked in the polyethylene bag and sealed
with dessicant and put back in its Ziploc bag for storage.
The glove box will be opened (following the procedure described on page 6) and the
processed blocks will be removed and another batch of crystal will be process.
Procedure for Disposal of Waste or Spilled Crystals
Waste or spilled crystals: immediately put into plastic bag and notify IH group Jennifer
Williams (Pager: 584-7882). Williams will put in R&D Chemroom fume hood and
dissolve crystal in water. The solution will be labeled as waste sodium iodate (a nonhazardous waste).
If spilled crystals occur - Place large pieced in a ziploc bag. Put any exposed crystals
back in protective package. Vacuum area with HEPA vacuum.

| SECTION 3 - HAZARDS IDENTIFICATION |
|=========================================================================|
EMERGENCY OVERVIEW: Harmful if swallowed. Vapors irritating to
respiratory tract. Suspect cancer hazard. Irritating to skin. May be
harmful if absorbed through skin.
ACUTE EFFECTS - EYE CONTACT: Mechanical irritant. Contact may cause
tearing and redness.
ACUTE EFFECTS - SKIN CONTACT: Irritant. Contact may cause defatting and
redness. Repeated or prolonged contact may cause dermatitis.
ACUTE EFFECTS - INHALATION: Liquid aspirated into lungs may cause chemical
pneumonitis. May cause headaches and dizziness. Prolonged exposure may
cause central nervous system depression.
ACUTE EFFECTS - INGESTION: May cause nausea and vomiting. May be harmful
or fatal if swallowed and aspirated into lungs.
CHRONIC OVEREXPOSURE EFFECTS: *Preexisting pulmonary and dermatological
disorders may be aggravated by exposure to hazardous components. *Oils
such as the one used in this material have been listed by IARC as a
suspected carcinogen via inhalation. Skin painting studies in animals
have shown that prolonged dermal contact produces a weak to moderate
carcinogenic activity. Repeated dermal application of high levels of
material on animals resulted in liver and kidney damage. Materials similar
to this product have tested positive in “in vivo” mutagenic and cytogenic
assays.
