2007-08 OUTLOOK
T
he Old Dominion
University women’s
golf squad returns
seven letterwinners
from a year ago along
with an outstanding newcomer
and is poised for a breakout
season. Last year, ODU posted
seven top ten finishes and three
top five finishes.
“The squad made a large
jump last year into the top
half of most fields, and won its
first event,” said head coach
Emma Gilmore & Laura Holmes
Pat Kotten. “This year we look to continue that improvement. The team continues to
amaze me. Every event this fall seemed to have a different player step up to lead the
team, whether it was co-captain Meghan Schaefer or freshman Emma Gilmore, every
week someone new takes the lead.”
The list of returnees includes Rashelle Fetty, Alexis Garduno, Laura Holmes, Samantha
Mosko, Bailey Mosier and Meghan Schaefer, while newcomer Emma Gilmore adds to
the squad’s depth.
Despite the loss of standout Ashley Davis, thus far this fall, the Lady Monarchs
have had four top ten finishes this season, including third at Marshall, fifth at the Lady
Monarch Invitational and seventh at William & Mary.
Sophomore Laura Holmes enjoyed a solid freshman season last year, leading ODU
in seven events. She earned second team All-CAA honors and compiled a 78.72 stroke
average. Thus far she has finished 12th at the Lady Monarch Invitational and 20th at
Marshall.
Junior Alexis Garduno has already had two top 20 finishes this fall. She tied for seventh
at Marshall and sixth at the Lady Monarch Invitational. She also shot a personal best 70
in the first round of the Lady Monarch Invitational, which is two strokes off the school
mark. Last year, Garduno tied for second at the Lady Monarch Invitational, ninth at
Springlake and 13th at Wofford.
Meghan Schaefer tied for ninth at Marshall and 15th at William & Mary this fall. She
compiled a 80.72 stroke average last year with four top 20 finishes, which include eighth
place at Longwood and the Lady Monarch Invitationals.
The Lady Monarchs will also be counting heavily on the play of Deztany Jackson,
who shot two rounds under 80 this fall, Samantha Mosko, Bailey Mosier and Rashelle
Fetty, who led ODU at the Myrtle Beach Classic.
Last season, ODU won the Lady Monarch Invitational, tied for third at Longwood
and NIU Springlake, fifth at Wofford and seventh at the CAA Championships.
“We have a lot of depth,” said Kotten. “Anyone on the roster can step up and play.”
Last year’s second team All-CAA selection Laura Holmes has played well as has Alexis
Garduno. Alexis became only the second Lady Monarch to break par at the Lady Monarch
Invitational, shooting a two under 70. Rashelle Fetty, Deztany Jackson, Samantha Mosko
and co-captain Bailey Mosier have played well for us. With Alexis, Laura and Meghan
leading the way, this is a team that can finally have a breakthrough performance at the
CAA Championships.”

Pat Kotten
Head Coach
P
at Kotten, a two-time conference
Coach of the Year, is in his fifth season
as head women’s golf coach at Old
Dominion University.
This past fall, ODU enjoyed four
top ten finishes including third place at Marshall,
fifth at the Lady Monarch Invitational and
seventh at William and Mary.
ODU enjoyed its finest season a year ago with
seven top ten finishes and four top five finishes,
including the championship of the Lady Monarch
Invitational. Freshman Laura Holmes earned
second team All-CAA honors.
In 2006, the Lady Monarchs had five top ten finishes which included a
fourth place finish at the Tribe Classic and sixth place at Bethune-Cookman’s
tournament.
Kotten has 17 years of Division I golf coaching experience. Prior to his
coming to ODU, Kotten served as the men’s head coach at the University
of Maryland Baltimore County and started the women’s program where
he coached for four seasons.
As the men’s golf coach at UMBC, the program captured the NEC
Championship three straight years from 1998-2001. The squad advanced
to the NCAA Regionals in 2000 and 2001. Kotten was Named NEC Men’s
Golf Coach of Year in 1999 and 2001, while the women’s team took third at
the NEC Championships in 2001, their highest finish ever.
