Aiming for the mark
I
n the fall of 2012, three Cedarville University students
and two advisors during the university’s involvement fair stood
on the sidewalk telling the student body about the newest organization on campus, Chi
Sigma Mu, the Cedarville Student Marksmanship club. Yes,
that is right, guns on a Christian
campus. Word spread quickly
and by the end of the school
year, the organization’s ranks
swelled to over eighty members
and talk turned to starting competitive shooting teams.
Coaches were needed for
the teams and even though I had
no competitive experience I
volunteered to coach the pistol
team. We had team members
and a coach, but no equipment.
God provides! Entry level pistols were donated to the team
and a local gunsmith donated
competition triggers. We were

ready to compete. Not quite. We
could only get access to the range
one night, so we ended up in the
basement of a professor’s house,
practicing by dry-firing at small
targets taped to the wall. September arrived and it was time to
compete.
One of the biggest aspects of
collegiate pistol shooting and
many other sports as well is the
mental preparation. When your
bulls-eye is the size of the end a
drinking straw and you are trying
to see from ten meters away, the
slightest distraction can cause the
shot to go awry. A lot of competitors use meditation to achieve that
state of concentration, but that
bothered me since most meditation is based on the eastern religions.
Looking for help, I turned to
Cedarville University president,
Dr. Thomas White, who has a
black belt in karate. His advice
has been the foundation of our
mental preparation program:
“Instead of meditation, use
prayer. In the martial arts, I encountered much the same. However, instead of searching for an
inner peace or inner strength, I
knew that the one I was praying
to, I could pray to with my mind
as Paul says in 1 Corinthians 14,
and that the purpose is to be still
and know that He is God. The
analogy is ultimately the same.
You let the artificial snow in the
snow globe be still and settle on

the bottom so that you can see and
think clearly. Unbelievers do this
through meditation and focusing on
heart beat etc. Believers do this
from praying and listening to the
one almighty God. You can even
read the Psalms as a way of preparation for the time of prayer. In the
prayer, you can give the results
over to God and then do your best
knowing that on some days He may
exalt you so that He gets the glory.”
So the competitions began.
While at times we shot like the beginners we were, the team steadily
improved and in November we had
our first individual event winner.
At first the other teams were not
sure how to react to this “Christian”
University that had a prayer circle
after every match. Soon the prayer
circle outgrew the ready room and
had to be held in the range area.
Intercollegiate sectionals were
held on February 1, with many of
the team members shooting personal bests. Our lone senior, Joe

The value of “old”
I
n the animated movie Despicable Me, there is a
scene where Gru is asking his assistant, Doctor Nefario, to invent a new device. It is obvious by looking
at the assistant that he has had many birthdays. His
hearing isn’t as sharp as it was when he was a younger
man. Instead of inventing cookie robots to spy on
Vector, Dr. Nefario ends up inventing boogie robots
that “boogie” on stage with the minions. In Gru’s
frustration he mutters, “Why do you have to be so
old?”
That prompts me to wonder, “Is old bad?” I
just hung a new picture of Cathy and me in our home,
and I had to ask her who those people were with all
the white hair. (I mean person, not people. That was
close.) Is old bad?
In cleaning our basement recently, Cathy
came across some books we don’t use anymore and
wanted to get rid of them. The main reason to eliminate them is that they are old. (I sleep with one eye
open now after she said that.)
Are old books useless? The
answer to that is yes, some are,
and no, not all are useless.
I have several I Go
Pogo books that are classics
written by Walt Kelly back in
the 50’s. The humor and satire
are dated but I will never part
with them (unless they are
worth a fortune).
What prompted my thinking
was a recent debate between
Ken Ham and Bill Nye. Bill
Nye has no use for the Bible
because it is an “ancient book.” Bill Nye, the mechanical engineer turned “science guy” believes that
the Bible is out dated and not reliable. In the interview, he continually referred to the Bible as an ancient
document that was not credible. Bill Nye said the Bible doesn’t tell Earth’s true history. He ended by saying that he fears for the education of the American
children if we teach the Bible account of creation.
Ken Ham, on the other side, said he was basing his beliefs on the Bible. He answered Bill Nye’s
questions by saying, “There is a Book that gives us the
answer.” The debate was billed as being about creation and evolution, but it seemed to be about the Bible.
I believe
we live on
a young
earth.
One man uses it as his starting source for science and
one man dismisses it as a useless source for science.
Do recent discoveries prove the Bible to be inaccurate
and render the Bible useless? Or do these so-called
discoveries come with their own presuppositions?
Does science always have facts or do they need to
start with an assumption?
Since no one living was around when
the earth was formed, we have a choice to accept
man’s guess of what happened years ago or to accept
the Word of God as the answer to what happened
years ago. If man’s guess contradicts the first three
chapters of God’s Word, then the rest of the chapters
might be inaccurate also. If, however you accept the
Bible as the inerrant Word of God then the assumptions of science must start with the creation story of
Genesis 1 and 2. A literal interpretation of the Bible
will lead you to a young earth position. The Bible
might be old but it is as reliable today as it was the day
it was written.
Disclosure: I believe in a literal interpretation
of the Bible. I believe God created the earth in six
literal and consecutive days. I believe we live on a
young earth.

Ivancic, shot well enough to potentially qualify for the NRA Collegiate National in March. So as I write this, Joe
and I are waiting and praying that his score will hold after all the sectionals are completed. Qualify or not, it has
been a good season for a rookie coach with a rookie team and entry level equipment. God is good!

~ Calvary Christian School notes ~
Thanks to all who made our spaghetti dinner a success!!! We made $1400.06 in profit. God is always faithful to
provide what we need. It was a great time of fun and fellowship.
Our open house brought in eight new students for next year. If you know of someone interested in our school,
please stop in the school office and get our new promotional DVD to give to families, and take as many as you
wish.
Please keep in mind our re-enrollment date - February to March 17. Again, this will help our staff to determine
their supplies and textbooks for next year.
The middle school Fellowship of Christian Athletes would like to thank everybody who helped make our food can
drive a huge success. The total count was 1095 cans that we will distribute to two local church pantries.
The portable classrooms are separated, wrapped and waiting to be transported to Calvary when the weather
breaks. The classrooms will be ready to use for our next school year - what a God-given gift for our school.
The Faith Challenge, now $30,000, will be used to add staff as we grow. Please pray that this need will be met by
the end of school.
Please pray for our 2014-2015 school year and the staff that will be needed to meet the growing numbers. Praise
the Lord for His goodness.
If you ever have a concern, please feel free to e-mail or call me. I will be glad to listen and work with you regarding your concerns.
