Our Story
How we started Witch’s Rock Surf Camp in Tamarindo and
Volcano Brewing Company in Tilaran.
Spanish translation here.
Early in 2001, we drove a school bus from San Diego, California, all the way through Central America. We surfed in
Mexico and El Salvador, and finally arrived in Tamarindo, Costa Rica, a month later. We rented a crappy shack on the
beach that we could barely afford. With lots of hard work, we transformed our little piece of paradise into the world’s
best surf camp ever!
Over time, we have grown from that bus on the beach, to the hotel, surf shop, and two beachfront restaurants in Tamarindo.
Robert August, the legendary surf world star of The Endless Summer, and a world-class surfboard shaper, hand-shapes
boards right here at Witch’s Rock Surf Camp, and teaches seminars to our guests.
In 2011, we added Volcano Brewing Company to our comany, a hotel and microbrewery in the Lake Arenal Region, located a
few kilometers outside of Tilaran. Now we make our own beer, and have another beautiful location for our friends to visit in
Costa Rica. We have a little eco-farm at Volcano Brewing Co., and we’re learning more about raising, sourcing, and preparing
farm fresh food for our restaurants.
We get to live our dreams, and employ more than 80 people year round, because you support us. Words can’t express how
grateful we are for all of our friends who help us grow, change, and do what we want in Paradise!
Pura Vida,
Joe and Holly Walsh

Joe and Holly Walsh
