Report on proceedings of CSSA Monthly Meeting: 24th January 2017 at Mt Waverley Community Centre Meeting Chaired by: Pres. Wayne Robinson Welcome to all members and visitors ( 69 Commenced: 8.03pm members and 4 visitors) Reminders: a) Mobile phones - please either off or on to silent mode b) Sign in at the 'red-book' members and visitors. c) "Freebie" - plant cuttings etc at the front door for members and members guests. Many thanks to all those who bring ‘freebies’ but please take home any that are not taken by members d) Library books are available for borrowing tonight– see Noelene e) Copies of all correspondence since last meeting is on the table along with journals, newsletters and magazines: - Newsletter from Ballarat CSA; Bromeliad Society. f) Assistance from members is sought and appreciated to both help set-up the tables/seating etc in the hall and to stack the chairs, and pack-up after the meeting g) We hope all our members and visitors will stay after the break to hear our guest speakers: Bob Mitchell and Andrew Thompson, who will be making a presentation with the topic "Growing from seed. h) Prior to the break, we have Attila giving a short presentation titled " ‘Succulents in vertical gardens – the future is looking up!’ . Attila is proposing to give a short talk also at Februarys meeting titled " ‘Bottle trees – I have one, now how do I get that big bottle shape faster?’. With a third short talk also proposed for the March meeting. So something extra to entice you along for the meeting. Plant of the Month: Grown it or Sown it - a plant you have propagated from seed or cutting : - (no discussion this month, as a tight time-frame.) Please vote for the POM, each person can place one vote /one glass bead, for their choice of best plant for "open" or "novice". Also the same for the photo competition. This month we also have the 2 prize vouchers of $25- ( a total of $50) for "Plant of the month - Presidents Choice Award", as selected by the President. (This may be awarded to Novice and Open, or depending on quality and number of entries, either/or). Winners will be announced at the end of the evening, following our main presentation. Novice winner - Dympna Painter : Open winner - : Bob Mitchell ; Photo comp - David Pretyman Presidents Choice Award: Dympna Painter - "Collander of Succulents", Bob Mitchell - Gymnocalycium saglioni in fruit. Information for Members 1) Supper Operative: Our Society has a new volunteer "Supper Operative" to organise and provide supper at our monthly meetings - this is Dympna Painter, thank you Dympner. Also would like to acknowledge and thank our previous "Supper Operative" Barb Simmons, who has performed this task brilliantly over the past few years. 2) Cactus and Succulent Collections and books for sale - Wayne has received several (or at least one) email advising that a person has Cacti/Succulents and some books for sale. Anyone interested please see Wayne at break or end of evening for details. 3) Plant of Month Photographer: Looking for a member or members to volunteer "POM photographer". This person (or group) of persons to take photos of the POM exhibits and winners, with photos to be copied to the Spine Editor, to allow inclusion into Spinette, facebook and/or website. Ideally this person to have some photography experience, their own camera, and regular attendance at a meeting. Please let a member of Committee know if you are interested. 1 of 3 Report on proceedings of CSSA Monthly Meeting: 24th January 2017 at Mt Waverley Community Centre 4) Pets in the Park 2017: - will take place on Sunday 26 March from 11am to 4pm at Central Park, Malvern East. Once again Noelene is representing the Society and running a marquee stall with plants and promotion; Noelene has been doing this for approximately 15 years. Felicity Wood is also joining Noelene. - Thank you Noelene and Felicity. It is a good promotion for CSSA, and to promote interest in succulents and cacti, at no cost to CSSA. It would be terrific if we could have some more members who are interested in selling and/or assisting Noelene . If you think you can be of assistance, even for a few hours or so, please see Noelene. - 5) Door Assistants: - Looking for members to take a turn assisting on the entry table, to sell raffle tickets, meet and greet etc. Please see Logan 6) CSSA 90th Anniversary in 2017 - We are looking at having a celebratory dinner and drinks (evening), with sit down 2 or 3 course meal, drinks etc. Looking for an indication of interest. Still to form a date, proposing Fri 28th or Sat 29th of April At this time proposing to have it in the "Victory Room" at the Mathew Flinders Hotel 667 Warrigal Rd Chadstone. They also have reasonably priced 'reasonable' motel accommodation for anyone who may like or need to stay over. We have a form for persons to register their interest. Deposit of $20 will be sought. If we do not get sufficient interest we will not be able to proceed with the event. If the proposed dinner goes ahead, we will also be looking for assistance from members for items/articles of historical interest. Cake makers/decorators for a 'interesting' succulent cake. Looking for ideas and participation from members to assist with organising and helping. List provided at front for members to record their interest. 7) We have noted in our copy of the December newsletters for the CSSACT Inc. - that Attila Kapitany has received an award from the Australian Institute of Horticulture for his work in the promotion and education of Australian Succulents through his website and book series on Australian plants. Congratulations to Attila on his award. ( Attila may have some details he can share, as we were unable to access the AIH website or facebook site for these details.) 8) Reminder for those members who have volunteered to contribute to next month's presentation: David Pretyman, Melissa Jackson, James Lucas, Jill Abbot, Sally Kent, Peter Breyley Topic: A Selection of Collections. Anyone forgotten or not able to present ? (Sally Kerr could not recall having volunteered !) 9) Calendar of Speakers for 2017 - Please refer to your new Spinette, for our proposed Calendar. We are still looking for ideas, and for members who are willing and able to make a presentation at our monthly meetings. Please give it consideration, and let us know. 10) Journal: - We are looking for short stories and longer articles, photos etc for our journal, it is becoming more difficult to get articles, and we would really like to include more local content. Stories, photos with text (explanation) of your plants, and cultivating experiences. REALLY asking for people to get involved, the more you can do, sharing information and experiences it is to the benefit of all. Also still looking for an editor, Wayne has been our temporary editor now for too many years. Auction : (Heinz to Auction; Couple of volunteers to take around plants, collect cash) - Auction raised $195.00; thank you all. Raffle: - five (5) tickets to draw.
