ARRI Academy Master Class
Innovation and creativity in the modern action genre
with Stephen F. Windon, ACS, ASC and Marc Spicer, ACS, assisted by 1st AC Joe Martinez
How to make the most of available camera and lighting technologies
Stephen F. Windon, ACS, ASC is an Emmy-nominated Australian cinematographer whose career
spans the last four decades. He recently completed work on Fast 8 for Universal Pictures, for which
he utilised the ALEXA camera system. In 2015 he teamed up with director Justin Lin on Star Trek
Beyond, combining ALEXA with Master Anamorphic lenses and ARRI Anamorphic Ultra Wide Zoom.
Windon’s previous credits include four other titles from the Fast and Furious franchise, G.I. Joe:
Retaliation, and episodes of the epic HBO series The Pacific, for which he received an Emmy
nomination in 2010 and an ASC Award in 2011.
Co-hosting the master class with Windon will be fellow Australian Marc Spicer, ACS. The two
collaborated on several Fast and Furious films as well as episodes of The Pacific, with Spicer serving
as either camera operator or second unit cinematographer. His most recent credit is shooting the
second unit on The Commuter, working alongside Paul Cameron, ASC.
‘In the workshop we’ll discuss how to select the right equipment for each shot, covering new
technology, multiple cameras, and special action rigs. We’ll demonstrate how to light for a moving
camera and how to configure the camera for moving lights. Action scenes often mean VFX, so we’ll
talk about shot planning, frame contamination, and prep work with the VFX team, as well as all other
departments. We’re also keen to explore what can be done on a very limited budget.’
 Wednesday, 16th November, 11:30–16:00
ARRI Academy Master Class:
Fearless cinematography in a sublime age
with Paul Cameron, ASC, assisted by 1st AC Joe Martinez
How to embrace bold lighting and looks using modern tools
LA-based cinematographer Paul Cameron, ASC has worked on some of the most visually
groundbreaking feature films of the past decade. He recently completed principal photography on
The Commuter for director Jaume Collet-Serra working with ARRI ALEXA Mini cameras.
Set for release in May next year, Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales promises
to be one of the biggest box office films of summer 2017. Cameron spent the larger part of 2015
shooting the film on location in Australia, again utilising the ALEXA system. His previous credits

include the pilot of HBO’s acclaimed series Westworld and the films Dead Man Down, Total Recall,
Man on Fire, Gone in Sixty Seconds, and Collateral.
Cameron will explore contemporary lighting techniques and LUT management with the ALEXA Mini
camera during the workshop. He will also demonstrate the ARRI TRINITY camera stabiliser rig and
debut the CINEFADE system, which allows cinematographers to vary depth of field in-camera during
a shot.
‘We are living through an exciting time in the world of cinematography, with new technology
enabling things that simply haven’t been possible before. Smaller cameras, new stabilisation tools,
and unprecedented image quality, combined with sophisticated look management and high-quality
monitoring now allow us to be fearless on set and to push our creativity to its limits.’

Gábor Szabó Seminar: The Development of Camera Movement in Film and its Integration into
Contemporary Film Language
In the past few years there have been revolutionary breakthroughs in camera movement. How has
the language of film itself been affected and influenced by these new devices? Which direction are
they taking the philosophy of film in? Exploring these questions requires a discussion of a number of
aspects of camera operation that are currently evolving:
Categorising and characterising camera movements from different points of view
The archetypes of camera movements both physically and from a narrative perspective
The relations between camera movements and the viewpoint of the film
The criteria for cutting camera movements
How the speed of the movement influences narration
Techniques for executions executing camera movements
The handheld camera’s special criteria
Nowadays the technology of the film industry seems to open out into two main arms, much like a
pair of scissors: big budget American blockbusters that still use the most expensive equipment, but
also productions using new, lower budget technology that has emerged, perhaps pointing towards a
more democratic cinematic world.
How can we use these new moving toys, and how can we understand, at the same time, what their
effect will be on the viewers of our films?

BMW Drives Culture: The Road to Excellence
Bartosz Konopka’s documentary entitled „The Road to Excellence” is an original story of renowned
artistic personalities. The BMW brand engaged in collaboration with artists, it values and admires. In
the film, each of them gave an account of important phases in their lives.
Five independent pieces - In Darkness, Challenges, Allies, Confrontation, Intuition - form a universal
whole. The director decided to combine the documentary with elements of feature films. Factual
stories are presented in a poetic convention, full of symbolism. Agnieszka Holland - contemplating
against the background of black her film career. In the midst of a picturesque garden, Kora meets
herself as an 8-year-old girl. Rafał Olbiński talks about women - a major inspiration in his painting.
Tomasz Stańko shows how evolutionary mistakes can be turned into art. In a silent etude, Janusz
Gajos shares a dream that has haunted him for years... All these personalities meet on the big screen
for the very first time. What is the essence of their phenomenon? What do they have in common?
Bartosz Konopka’s cinematic story has been inscribed in Joseph Campbell’s revolutionary concept of
the monomyth. The American myth researcher discovered, that people all over the world tell stories
based on a recurring pattern of a hero’s multi-stage journey, which is in fact a life journey of every
one of us. If only we find enough strength to experience it in full.
Directed by - Bartosz Konopka / cinematography - Jacek Podgórski / editing - Andrzej Dąbrowski /
production BMW Group Polska / executive producer - Timecode.
The film was produced as part of the BMW Drives Culture strategy. For more than 40 years now, the
BMW brand has supported cultural initiatives, cooperating with the world’s most renowned artists,
e.g.: Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jenny Holzer, or Jeff Koons.

he did with Aston Martin and Hackett high profile video commercial. Cinematic production values
and workflows being used not just in the cinema.
Clive said: “We preferred whole movie to be shot in available light so I was filming from shadow to
highlight in the same frame. Thankfully the C700 has a very high dynamic range and we shot in 4K
RAW, which is my preference. The camera was a PL mount version so we used a selection of Cinema
EOS primes and zooms plus EF zooms and primes on the C300 Mark II and the ME200S-SH that was
rigged to the car for the moving shots. With the exception of that, everything else was shot in 4K.”

ASC & IMAGO: The importance of international collaboration
In this rapidly changing digital world of cinematography, the need to share knowledge and
experience across the borders has vastly increased.
A conference by ASC, the American Society of Cinematographers, in collaboration with IMAGO, the
European Federation of Cinematographers, and Camerimage.
How to stay in control of our images? Knowledge is power!
Through technological knowledge we can strengthen our position as cinematographers, both in preproduction, during production and in post.
How can we work to make sure relevant information reaches all cinematographers, and how can
cinematographers make sure they always keep up to date with the latest information about new
techniques and equipment that can help them develop their artistry to a higher level?
We believe that through a closer collaboration between international cinematographers and their
national Societies, we can all transmit and receive important information regarding our art faster and
more efficient. The question is how!
The questions that were debated in detail amongst others were:
How can we work to increase sharing experience and knowledge regarding our art and new
technologies in cinematography?
How can communication between international Cinematographer´s Societies and their members best
be improved?
What should be prioritized?
How should such a collaboration practically be put into function?
Should and can all national Societies appoint international communications manager/s?
What are the best communication channels?
Increasing the number of international workshops, educational seminars and conferences in
cooperation with sponsors and/or others?
Regular yearly meetings?
Streaming of World-wide educational seminars on internet?
The need for financing?
Input from the audience was essential! The panel consisted of representatives from the American
Society of Cinematographers, from IMAGO, the European Federation of Cinematographers, and

GET NOTICED AS A PROFESSIONAL FILM ARTIST!
A PANEL DISCUSSION WITH EXPERIENCED AGENTS FOR EMERGING TALENTS
Bill Dispoto – DATTNER DISPOTO
Zoe Matthews – MY MANAGEMENT
Jonathan Silverman – IN.TRIN.SIC Production Agency
Kristen Tolle-Billings – WORLDWIDE PRODUCTION AGENCY
Since the first edition of the Camerimage Festival we have been trying to create a space for the free
flow of experience and knowledge of the film industry. That is the reason why for the third time we
wish to address the needs of aspiring young adepts of the art of the moving picture. The extremely
popular Get Noticed panel discussion offers a unique opportunity to discover the secrets of building
your image in the film market, which are not widely available.
This year agents from Europe and the USA gave their take on how one should pursue their career to
become established in the industry within several years. What actions did they take and what kind of
projects did inexperienced cinematographers carry out to become trustworthy and respected by
their colleagues and clients? How did the agents influence their careers?
These and many other questions were answered by the specialists invited to the discussion.

BVK – PSC Cinematographers Strategy Panel: Designing Your Professional Communication
Survival of the Fittest or a Systematic Business Model?
Self-Positioning and Negotiations in Cinematography
Like other people working and living for the arts, cinematographers often have a lack of economic
and organisational analysis as well as a lack of systematic communication. When starting a
professional career in the media business, there are often many other urgent questions and each
project can be a challenge...
As a creative you have to deal with communication professionals sitting on the other side of the
table. You need to know about the rules and opportunities when negotiating with producers and
production companies and their staff.
This seminar helped to improve communicational awareness and self-positioning strategies.
Common situations in the bargaining process were discussed and participants were shown how to
equip their own toolbox for future contract negotiations. Reflections on different roles and
participants’ self-confidence were feed into better situational and communicational analysis.
The aim of the panel was to have young cinematographers with creative and communicative
knowledge, which will lead to better contracts that both benefit them and support their economic
independence.

JESSICA LANGE
UNSEEN
Photography exhibition
13.11.2016 – 29.01.2017
The Municipal Gallery bwa in Bydgoszcz
Gdańska 20
Exhibition Opening: Sunday, 13.11, at 18:00
CAMERIMAGE invited to The Municipal Gallery bwa in Bydgoszcz on Sunday, November 13th, 2016,
to the grand opening of the exhibition of photographs of Jessica Lange, world renowned actress
best known for her performances in All That Jazz, The Postman Always Rings Twice, Tootsie, Rob
Roy, Cape Fear, Blue Sky and American Horror Story TV series.
In 1967Jessica Lange was granted a scholarship from the University of Minnesota to study
photography, but the vicissitudes of student life led her to Spain and then Paris where she chose to
put dramatic arts before practical photography. It was then that she embarked on her acting career,
playing leading parts in numerous iconic movies and winning two Academy Awards for Best Actress
for her roles in Tootsie (Supporting Role, 1983) and Blue Sky (Leading Role, 1995).
Not until later, at the beginning of the nineties (when Sam Shepard gave her a Leica M6), did Jessica
Lange take up her photographic exploits again. Her images are captured on her travels and
wanderings – her lens has roamed through countries such as the USA, France, Finland and Italy,
although she has a particular soft spot for Mexico, as she herself puts it, “for its lights and wonderful
nights“.
The collection, bringing together 135 black & white photographs (including 12 contact sheets) taken
traditionally over the last 20 years, is arranged into two series: “Things I See” and “Mexico, On
Scene”.

DAVID CRONENBERG: EVOLUTION
Exhibition
14.11.2016 – 26.03.2017
Centre of Contemporary Art „Znaki Czasu” in Toruń, Wały Gen. Sikorskiego 13
Exhibition Opening: Monday, 14.11, at 18:00
CAMERIMAGE invited to Centre of Contemporary Art in Torun on Monday, November 14 th, to the
grand opening of unique exhibition presenting body of work of the renowned Canadian film
director, David Cronenberg. Director David Cronenberg’s reputation as an authentic auteur has been
firmly established by his uniquely personal body of work which includes: Shivers, Rabid, Fast
Company, The Brood, Scanners, Videodrome, The Fly, Dead Ringers, Naked Lunch, Crash, eXistenz,
The Dead Zone, M. Butterfly, Spider, A History of Violence, Eastern Promises, A Dangerous Method,
Cosmopolis and Maps to the Stars. Frequently lauded as one of the world’s greatest and most
influential directors, Cronenberg’s films have earned him critical praise and recognition
internationally. In 1999, he presided over the jury at the Cannes Film Festival and was awarded the
Festival’s lifetime achievement award, the Carrosse d'Or, in 2006.
In 2006 David worked with the Art Gallery of Ontario as a guest curator for the exhibition, Andy
Warhol/Supernova: Stars, Deaths and Disasters, 1962-1964. David created an innovative soundtrack
audio guide with additional commentary by several of Warhol’s contemporaries, including actor
Dennis Hopper, film critic Amy Taubin, and artist James Rosenquist. In 2008, David brought his film
The Fly to the stage for the Théâtre du Châtelet and LA Opera. He debuted his own novel and first
work of fiction, Consumed, fall 2014. Recognition of Cronenberg’s contribution to art and culture has
included investiture in the Order of Canada in 2015, France’s Order of Arts and Letters in 1990 and
the Légion d’honneur in 2009. Cronenberg was made a Fellow of the British Film Institute in 2011.
The cinema of David Cronenberg offers one of contemporary culture’s most unique, intriguing and
powerful speculations on the idea of human evolution. Through the presentation of original artifacts,
props, set pieces and dynamic audiovisual elements, David Cronenberg: Evolution parallels
Cronenberg’s own growth as a filmmaker with his ongoing examination of human evolutionary
possibilities. Divided into three major sections that follow the chronological and thematic trajectory
of Cronenberg’s cinema, the exhibition traces how Cronenberg’s early fascination with the inner
realms of body and mind – their drives, desires, and sometimes uncontrollable powers – develops
into an exploration of the outer world that those forces help to shape. Immersively exploring
Cronenberg’s creative process, his relationship to science fiction and science fact, and his affinities
with other major 20th-century artists, David Cronenberg: Evolution celebrates not only one of the
world’s most acclaimed filmmakers but one of our most provocative and influential contemporary
thinkers.

12 FACES
Galeria Farbiarnia
Pomorska 68A/1
08.10-19.11.2016
According to Emmanuel Levinas, a face can never be fully characterized, never fully described. It is
something infinite, an indeterminate element that storms the unity and peace of our world. Thus,
draws our attention, calls us to talk, directs us face-to-face. "12 Faces" tell stories of cruel and
inhumane experiences, recorded in two ways. Written on paper and images captured on large format
film. Syrian refugees living in Turkish camps are not always willing to talk, but their postures, facial
expressions and emotions do not require additional commentary and explanations. The face, like a
mirror, reflects the fear, anxiety, helplessness, resignation, denial, anger, but also the pride and
respect. Emotions, known only to those who looked war in the face.
Photographs were taken at the end of August and beginning of September 2012 in Islahlye, Turkey,
at the refugee camp close to Syrian border.
The exhibition was under the patronage of the CAMERIMAGE Festival.
CZECH AND SLOVAK PHOTOGRAPHY FROM PRIVATE COLLECTIONS
The Leon Wyczółkowski Regional Museum in Bydgoszcz
Granaries on the Brda River
Grodzka 7-11
20.10 - 21.11.2016
The exhibition presented nearly three hundred photographs by many well-known Czech and Slovak
photographers of different generations who created their works in the 20th and early 21st century.
The main theme of the presentation was nude art complemented by portrait, reportage, landscape,
experimental and candid photography. We presented various formal and thematic Czech and Slovak
photographs, and the nature of the artists' personal collections. There were many prominent artists
represented, including: Drtikol, Větrovský, Růžička Funke Gribovský, Sudek, Bartuška, Št’astný, Hájek,
Beran, Bartůšek, Straka, Štyrský, Dostál, Postupa, Saudek, and Židlický. At the same time, the
exhibition presented the work of artists who are less known to the typical Polish viewer, and whose
pictures show good artistic experience and technical skills. These photographs, taken over a period of
several decades, were created using a whole range of available technologies. There were black and
white as well as colour photographs, taken with traditional film and digital cameras. Most of the
images presented were characterised by a classical approach to the subject combined with formal
and technical excellence. We also presented courageous experimental photographs created using,
among other things, studio spot lighting, grain effects, collage and multi-layer techniques, Sabatier
effect and technologies related to the gelatine silver process. The authors of the images are
reporters, documentary makers, still photographers, artistic photographers, painters and sculptors.
Their activities form a part of numerous trends and styles, but above all their photographs reflect
their seeking for methods of self-expression.
The pictures presented in the framework of the exhibition demonstrate the character of a private
photographic collection created and transformed through the years. Its owner, Thomas Kruzel, treats
the collected Czech and Slovak photographs as a kind of mysterious and magical mirror used to
observe the old and modern worlds surrounding our southern neighbours.
