Quirimbas Island Hopping Safari

Quirimbas Island Hopping
Mozambique Mobile Camping Safari
Day 1: Arrive Pemba and road transfer to Mucojo, dhow transfer to Mogundula Island
You will be met at the airport and shown to your transfer vehicle for the approx. 3hr road transfer
to Mucojo. On arrival at Mucojo you will transfer by dhow boat to Mogundula Island.
Mogundula Island is one of the best islands in
the Quirimbas archipelago, and a fantastic
base from which to explore the surrounding
islands, which is why we spend two nights
here at a mobile camp. Known locally as the
island with the sacred lake, it provides us with
marvellous opportunities for bird watching,
snorkelling and swimming off the pristine
sandbank beach. The mobile camp is set
under the shade of trees and you can usually
expect to have this magical uninhabited island
to yourself!
Overnight camp and exploration of Mogundula Island and surrounds.

of blue water, with pristine corals waiting to be explored.
The Ulumbwa river mouth beckons, with fascinating rural fishing villages dotting the shore.
The camp will be set up in the Mozambique bush south of Ulumbwa.
Day 4: Day trip to Matemo Island
Visit Matemo Island where, turquoise clear waters and beautiful scenery awaits you; enjoy an
early morning sail up the Ulumbwa estuary viewing a variety of birds and mangroves that thrive
in this area. In the afternoon, take a tour through the fishing village getting to know the ways of
these fisher folk as interpreted by your knowledgeable guide. We will stop on the southern tip of

Routing and Planned Guide Itinerary:
Trade winds blow on the east coast of Africa and change direction twice a year. The wind known locally
as the Kusi blows from the South, and the Kaskasi from the North. From September to May the mobile
safaris usually operate from the North to the South, meaning that the mobile safari starts at the
planned Mucojo area, and travels in a southerly direction towards Ibo Island. During some of the
months (usually June, July and August) and entirely dependent on winds and weather conditions, we
may need to change the planned itinerary entirely and operate from south to north. In these instances,
our safari will start in the beautiful Arimba region (closer to Pemba than Mucojo) and continue in a
northerly direction to Ibo Island. In these instances we will not travel to Mogundula or Matemo Island,
and in place we will explore the beautiful Quisiva, Mefunvo and Quirimba islands and all the special
places between Arimba and Ibo Island. Please do note that weather patterns are not constant and it is
impossible to always predict what the winds will do. We will do our best to detail the planned itinerary
at the time of booking, but clients must understand and accept that the itinerary has to remain entirely
flexible and may differ from that published.
