IDEAS FOR A FOOD COLLECTION DRIVE Have FUN while you FUNdraise! Be sure to set a poundage or financial goal: Remember, 5 meals =$1.00 • Do chores, cut grass, rake leaves in exchange for food donations. • Monitor Progress: For every 10 pounds of food brought in, tape a small picture of a can on the door, window or hall outside the room, Also use the power of social media to post updates on the competition and pounds collected. • Host a Movie Night: Charge a food item like a can of food as the admission price. Take it a step further: ask a local movie theater to host it. Now you can get hundreds of peeps & hundreds of cans of food! • Conduct community events: Bake sales, cake walk, BBQ dinners, car washes, multi-family (department) yard sales, etc. • Friendly competition: Challenge other schools, classes, grade levels, departments, etc. , Whoever wins can make the others wear their schools colors, decorate their rooms, halls, or offices, etc. • Have a Pajama/Dress Down/Crazy Hair Day: Petition your Principal. Set a goal. (Like, if 50% of teens bring in food, you get to dress down.) • Select student leaders to raise awareness of the drive – make posters and flyers • Got an event coming up: Holidays? Big sports event? Concert? Make a canned food the price to play or watch. After the event/game, deliver the jeans together. • Create a Raffle – Win Cool Stuff!: Get good prizes donated. Price to get a ticket? A shelf stable food item. • Lock Up Your Teacher: Columbus High School in Iowa did it recently. They put teachers on the school roof on a drizzly, cold day. (Seriously!) Each donated item added a minute of lock-up time. The result? 6+ hours on the roof! • Hot Chocolate Stand: Pick a good location. Get fun people to work it. Pick a good time—like right in front of school in the morning or outdoor event. Advertise it with posters a few days before: "Want some hot cocoa? It’ll cost you a can of food!" Give extra marshmallows to those who contribute more than one can. • Sponsor a cans sculpture contest: Get crazy prizes donated. The person or group with the best sculpture wins the prize! • Days of the Week: Make a theme for each day of the week & tell people to bring in cans that fit the theme, like Munchy Monday or Thick Thursday. • Ask the Principal or Administration to participate in an interesting/appealing contest, if the food/fund drive goal is met; i.e. wear a funny outfit, sing in front of students or at a big school event; etc. • Dedicate your food drive: Select one or two of our most need food items and employ a catchy title for your group and see which group/class/grade/department can collect the most food. Ex. "People for Peanut Butter, Protein Team, Bean Duty", etc. These are just a few tips to give ideas on how to have fun for a worthy cause. Many, many THANKS for your support of the Georgia Mountain Food Bank. Have fun!
