Honouring & Thanking
Our Donors
Funds from donors, along with the acknowledgement of a student’s
hard work and perseverance, touch lives and help students with their
educational goals. AECC Award donations, managed by the Camosun
College Foundation, have been provided by generous individuals,
service clubs, foundations, companies, and corporations to encourage
our students. We sincerely thank our donors for these gifts.
Songhees Nation Award – since 2005
The first three Songhees Nation Awards were provided by
Camosun College in recognition of the signing of an affiliation
agreement in 2005. In 2008, Aboriginal Education & Community
Connections and the College Foundation made the Songhees Nation
Award permanent by attaching it to the Dorothy Price Treasure Box
of Awards for Aboriginal Students.
In the Spirit of Laughter Award - since 2009
Kathleen Sun established this annual award in concurrence with
her teachings. This award recognizes the collective benefits that
emerge from good energy and generosity.
Vickers Family English Access Awards
This award is funded annually by the W̱SÁNEĆ School Board
to encourage and inspire its community members and to honour
its relationship with Camosun College.
– since 2010
The Vickers family created these awards for provincial English
Aboriginal students. David Vickers, a well-known and highly
regarded lawyer and judge who died in 2009, believed equality
and justice for all people was not possible without access to
education and community participation.
Tsa Qwa Supp Award – since 1999
First Unitarian Church of Victoria Award
W̱ SÁNEĆ School Board Award – since 2004
The late Art Thompson (Tsa Qwa Supp) cared deeply about
education, his Nuu-chah-nulth people, and Camosun College.
A residential school survivor, he discovered himself as a learner
at Camosun. In later years, many of his immediate and extended
family began or completed their education at Camosun. In 1997,
Art established the endowment that supports this award.
University of Victoria
Office of Indigenous Affairs Award – since 2009
Indigenous Affairs established this award to support the transition of
Aboriginal Camosun College students to the University of Victoria.
Indigenous Studies Achievement Award
– since 2003
The Indigenous Studies Achievement Award is part of the Dorothy
Price Treasure Box of Awards for Aboriginal Students. Mrs. Price
recognized the needs of Aboriginal people who are seeking
education to benefit their lives and their communities. In 1997,
at her passing, she left an extraordinarily generous gift to Camosun
to support Aboriginal students.
– since 2007
The First Unitarian Church of Victoria provides this annual award
to recognize and honour Aboriginal students who have overcome
great obstacles to begin the process of achieving their dreams.
Canadian Federation of University Women
(Saanich Peninsula) Award – since 2009
The CFUW (Saanich Peninsula) Award was established as a
priority of this CFUW chapter’s commitment to education
and Aboriginal people. In 2011, CFUW Saanich Peninsula made
this award permanent by establishing it as an endowment.
Aboriginal Healthcare Scholarship – since 2013
The Vancouver Island Health Authority provides this new
annual scholarship to Aboriginal students enrolled in various
health programs at the College.
Philosophy
Honouring our teachings, we seek and hold values of trust,
wisdom, integrity, courage, humility, and love. From this,
we walk alongside students to encourage in them – and in
ourselves – perseverance, commitment, and excellence.
Beliefs
We believe that Aboriginal learners reach their fullest joy and
potential as they acknowledge place and engage in learning
and teaching while exploring identify and tradition.
Mission
Our mission is to engage in Aboriginal education, services,
and leadership that enhance student learning and enriches
relationships with communities.
