little black creek canoe trip

LITTLE BLACK CREEK CANOE TRIP
www.blackcreekcanoe.com
The Wilderness Medicine Student Interest Group is planning a canoe trip to Little Black
Creek in Brooklyn, MS on Saturday, October 6th. We will be meeting in Brooklyn, MS Saturday
morning and launching the canoes at 8AM. I know it is early, but It’s only a little over an hour
drive, so it shouldn’t be a problem. I would allow a half hour for you to rent your canoe and it
to be dropped off at the launch. You are welcomed to bring a friend, girlfriend, boyfriend,
significant others, etc. if you like. Everyone will be responsible for securing their own
canoe/kayak; however, that should be no problem if you go through Little Black Creek Canoe
Rental (URL at top of page). Little Black Creek Canoe Rental offers 7 different trip options and a
shuttle service (included in cost of canoe), so you can do either a 2-day or a 1-day trip.
Although there are several different launch points, we will be most likely leaving from Brooklyn
Bridge just so that we are all together at the start. You can, however, choose whichever one
you like, or any combination thereof. If you are planning on spending the night, you WILL need
a tent, sleeping bag, dinner, toiletries etc. If you are only canoeing for the day, bring plenty of
water (or whatever you are drinking), lunch, and maybe some snacks. I cannot emphasize
enough that there will be NO facilities along the way. We will be most likely camping on a
random beach for the night.
DESCRIPTION:
Beautiful Black Creek winds its way through the center of the Desoto National Forest.
The creek is the central force behind what has been called "The Black Creek Experience." For
some, this experience may be canoeing down the creek, camping on sandbars, or enjoying the
camaraderie of family or friends. For others it is the opportunity to get away from the" rat
race" - hiking and camping in the wilderness, communing with nature, and enjoying the
scenery. Anglers enjoy quiet spots along the creek to fish for red bellies, bass, catfish, and
bream. The waters of Black Creek are clear but have a brownish tint due to tannic acid from
decaying leaves of trees that border the stream. Magnolia trees and wild azaleas are plentiful.
It is not uncommon to see deer, wild turkey, squirrels, ducks, owls, great blue herons, and
beavers along the stream. Free floating time averages about 1 mile per hour depending on the
season and rainfall. Floaters can easily estimate travel time so as to allow themselves those few
extra minutes at a productive fishing hole or for a lazy picnic on a sandbar. The Black ranges in
width from 20-100 feet and from a few inches to 20 feet deep. The 21 miles of Black Creek from
Moody's Landing to Fairley Bridge has been designated a National Wild and Scenic Stream.
The different trip options are listed below: (from the website)

Trip 1 - Camp Dantzler to Brooklyn:
A total of 13 miles can be canoed in approximately 5 1/2 hours. The current is faster and
more maneuvering is required on this section. Put in at Camp Dantzler Bridge and take
out where we are located at the Brooklyn Bridge. A great float for one day.
Trip 2 - Big Creek to Brooklyn:
A total of 5 miles can be floated in approximately 3 hours. Put in at Big Creek Boat
Landing and take out at Brooklyn Bridge. This is a perfect float for beginners. The
current is nice and swim holes are plentiful.
Trip 3 - Brooklyn to Moody's Landing:
A total of 5 miles can be canoed in approximately 3 1/2 hours. On this float you begin at
the Brooklyn Bridge and float to a small primitive camp ground. Take out at the sandbarriver-left- just past Moody's Landing sign.
Trip 4 - Brooklyn to Janice:
A total of 15 miles can be canoed in approximately 8 1/2 hours and is a good overnight
trip. The section from Moody's Landing to Janice features wide sandbars and steep
banks. Take out river-left at Janice Bridge.
Trip 5 - Brooklyn to Cypress Creek Landing:
Begin at the Brooklyn Bridge. The trip continues on from Janice through the Black Creek
Wilderness area to Cypress Creek Boat Landing where you take out river-left. The total
20 miles can be floated in 10 1/2 hours and is a good overnight trip.
Trip 6 - Brooklyn to Fairley Bridge
A total of 25 miles can be canoed in approximately 14 hours. We suggest you plan 3
days and 2 nights for this trip. Begin at the Brooklyn Bridge- the stretch from Moody's
Landing to Fairley Bridge has been designated a Wild & Scenic Stream because of its
scenic qualities and remoteness.
