MUNICIPALITY’S ID Municipality Gradiška is placed in the north-western part of the Republic of Srpska and it spreads on the surface of 762 km2, with 73 settlements in which live around 62.000 inhabitants. It consists of lowland part of Lijevče field, foothills of northern part of Potkozarje and smaller mountain part of Kozara and Prosara. Urban part of municipality Gradiška borders with the neighbouring Republic of Croatia, where is placed the biggest border crossing in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Municipality Gradiška leans onto the river Sava by its northern part in the length of 57 km, which represents the basic watercourse of municipality. Direct access to the river Sava, natural openness through ‘’Sava’s corridor’’ to the East and the West and openness through mountain hinterland to the South towards the Adriatic Sea give Gradiška a very suitable traffic-geographic position, which will have bigger significance when the route of high-way Gradiška – Banja Luka is constructed. In the Roman era the settlement Servitium is mentioned in this area, while in 1295 for the first time, as a place for crossing the Sava, officially is mentioned the name Alsogradisca, and later on as Gradischi Brod. In the period 1536 till 1878 Gradiška was, except for short breaks, under Turkish reign, which was replaced by Austro-Hungarian reign until 1918. The First and Second World War left serious consequences on the territory of municipality, and significant development can be observed in the 70ies of the last century. Today on the territory of municipality, it has been created a general climate and setting for successful acting and use of all possibilities in the area of development. Numerous archeological findings that reach to time of Roman Empire serve as evidence on rich cultural-historic heritage of this municipality. Intensive development of agriculture is based on the use of contemporary means and agro-technical measures in the agriculture, on construction of contemporary farms, as well as raising contemporary plantation orchards. Agricultural land, as significant generator of development, covers 67% of territory of municipality, i.e. 50.761 ha. In the Lijevče field the most popular is production of tillage and vegetable cultures as well as production of fodder, while the fruit-production is the most developed in the Potkozarje area. Many farms of milking cows, pigs for meat production as well as certain number of poultry farms are built on the territory of municipality. Especially intensive development has been recorded in the fruit-growing, first of all, in apple production, and more and more in pear and plum production, where municipality Gradiška is the biggest fruit producer in BiH. Annual production is around 70.000 tons of fruit, with indication of constant increase of production. Aside extraordinary suitable climate conditions, the fact that on the territory of municipality are built contemporary cooling-storages whose capacities are around 30.000t also contributes to the increased production. Forests, as a significant resource of municipality, cover 33% of its territory. On the basis of this natural resource, the wood-processing industry developed, whose beginnings are connected with 1855, when the first saw-mill in Gornji Podgradci was built. Also, supplies of drinking water are significant resource of municipality, as well as the internationally navigable river Sava. BUSINESS POSSIBILITIES Significant development potentials of municipality are found in the created resources, i.e. existing economic structure based on the food-, wood-, metal- processing and textile industry, construction industry, tourism, catering, and different forms of service and crafts activities. Around 500 economic entities are active today in Gradiška, which are mostly small and medium enterprises. On the territory of municipality Gradiška, two business zones are defined, and prepared construction land is at the disposal to potential investors: Business zone Cerovljani – Berek: Location: Business zone is 10 km away from town centre. It is placed on the distance of 500 – 1000 m from the high-way route Banja Luka – Gradiška. Town tourism should also be mentioned as well as the river Sava, Donja Dolina and transit tourism, considering that the biggest and most significant entrance from Europe to BiH is located in Gradiška. Famous excursion sites and archeological findings are Monastery Karanovac in Gornji Kijevci from Roman era and Middle Ages, Vrbaški town from XIII century, wooden church in Romanovci from XVIII century, and the cave in Trnovac, as well as excursion site „Subotići“ in the village Kozara and bathing-site „Jezero“ in Laminci. Big project „Archeological – ecological park Donja Dolina – Bardača“ belongs to the respectable projects for European standards. Through all seasons Gradiška has numerous cultural and entertaining events. Health care The system of health care on the territory of municipality consists of three public health care institutions. Health centre, as a carrier of primary health care, has 27 teams of family medicine that work in accordance with the European standards. General hospital, as a carrier of secondary health care satisfies all needs of contemporary acute hospital. Pharmacy institution is the carrier of selling and preparing medications on the territory of municipality. and one college for business management. Schools are equipped with contemporary equipment and teaching appliances and are qualified for organization of contemporary classes. Culture Central place of cultural happenings and manifestations is Cultural centre, which has spatial and technical possibilities of highest rank. Carriers of cultural contents are numerous amateur cultural artistic societies as well as County Museum and National Library. Sports There are 66 actively acting sports organizations and clubs within 20 sports areas on the territory of municipality.
