Municipality Gradiška leans onto the river Sava by its
northern part in the length of 57 km, which represents
the basic watercourse of municipality.
Direct access to the river Sava, natural openness
through ‘’Sava’s corridor’’ to the East and the West and
openness through mountain hinterland to the South
towards the Adriatic Sea give Gradiška a very suitable
traffic-geographic position, which will have bigger significance when the route of high-way Gradiška – Banja Luka
is constructed.

The first significant traces of existence of settlements
on the territory of today’s municipality are related to the
pre-historic times, which is confirmed with the archeological findings of houses on stilts in Donja Dolina.
In the Roman era the settlement Servitium is mentioned in this area, while in 1295 for the first time, as
a place for crossing the Sava, officially is mentioned
the name Alsogradisca, and later on as Gradischi Brod.
In the period 1536 till 1878 Gradiška was, except for
short breaks, under Turkish reign, which was replaced by
Austro-Hungarian reign until 1918.
The First and Second World War left serious consequences on the territory of municipality, and significant
development can be observed in the 70ies of the last
century. Today on the territory of municipality, it has been
created a general climate and setting for successful acting
and use of all possibilities in the area of development.
Numerous archeological findings that reach to time of
Roman Empire serve as evidence on rich cultural-historic
heritage of this municipality.
