Nurse’s Corner
If a resident has a moderate or high heat risk score, this sun picture is placed on
their bathroom mirror to remind staff and visitors that …
Summer Heat can bring Heat Stress Risks
Please provide a fan for your resident if they don’t have one. Drop it off at the
reception desk so we can label it and have maintenance check that it works
Safely before using in the room.
Before you give a resident a drink, be sure to check first with the care team to
ensure they can have regular fluids - prevent choking hazards! Please provide
fluids regularly during your visit.
Please do not leave any food or dairy or other perishable foods in the resident’s room. Food safety hazard!
While visiting help to close curtains to block out direct sunlight, open windows, and keep residents’ rooms doors open to create airflow. Keep it cool!
Visit in the LOWER MAIN RECREATION ROOM, Main floor or in the garden
shade where it is cooler.
Cool face cloths can be applied while you visit to aid in cooling a resident who
is hot. Please ask for some face cloths.
Loose, lightweight clothing should be made available- if the resident is confused you may be asked to remove out of season clothing. Provide a sun hat
and label it with a permanent marker.
Sunscreen is available on the main floor in the wellness room for the residents.
Report to the nurse if you are concerned about your loved one becoming too
hot!

Watermelon Cooler
4-5 cups of seedless watermelon (1 medium-sized watermelon), cut into chunks
1/2 peeled cucumber, cut into chunks
5 -10 mint leaves roughly chopped
3 tablespoons of sugar
1 tablespoon of fresh lime juice
a pinch of salt
Directions
Depending on the size of your blender, you may have to do
this in two batches. Divide your ingredients in half, and
process it twice if need be. Place all the ingredients in a
blender, and process until it smooth. Pour the mixture
through a strainer into a bowl, pressing the solids with a
wooden spoon to get all the liquid out.
Place the watermelon mixture back in your blender and add
ice cubes. Depending on how slushy you want it, add your
ice cubes accordingly. Serve immediately
