THE WHIPPING BOY
Author: Sid Fleischman
Publisher: New York: HarperTrophy, 2003
Call No.: Junior Lending English FLE
Orphan Jemmy is the whipping boy: he is punished in place of the spoilt and ill-mannered
Prince Brat whenever he acts up. When the prince decides to run away, Jemmy is swept
up into an adventure he wants no part in, involving two gruff, menacing villains, some hot
potatoes and a large bear.
As the boys unhappily swap places, the lesson of stepping into another person’s shoes
and the importance of empathy emerge. Peppered with classic illustrations by Peter Sís,
this all-time favourite and Newbery Medal winner is not just a thrilling ride; it is also a
captivating tale about growing up.

make fun of her for looking odd.

friend Trixie, Stella comes up with a scheme to put an end to the mischief and learns to

OVER IN THE WETLANDS: A HURRICANE-ON-THE-BAYOU STORY
Author: Caroline Starr Rose
Publisher: New York: Schwartz & Wade Books, 2015
Call No.: Junior Lending Picture Book English ROS
Told in rhyming verse, this beautifully illustrated book shows animals hiding from a storm
as a hurricane stirs over the Mississippi River Delta. After the storm, the animals creep out
again and the bayou is peaceful once more. However, a note from the author tells us that
flooding, which comes after a hurricane, is a growing threat to Louisiana’s coastal wetlands.
This is because over 2,000 square miles of wetlands have been destroyed by humans.
At the end of the book, readers can also learn more about the animals in the story; their
habitat and living patterns in the bayou. This is a good lead-in for parents to teach their
children about the ecological impact of human activities on the environment.

Try it
out!
The Sherlock Sam series is about a young boy living in Singapore who likes solving
mysteries. I really like the humour in this book. I also like this book because like most
Scooby-Doo shows, it’s almost always impossible to guess who the culprit behind the
mystery is.
