Course Description:
This class will cover writing, literature, grammar and vocabulary. Authors
such as Mark Twain, F. Scott Fitzgerald, John Steinbeck, Arthur Miller
and Edgar Allen Poe are a few of the many that will be read. In addition,
historical documents will also be read.
This class will develop your cultural literacy. It will help you make
connections between literature, history and culture. This class will also
provide the student with a sense of awareness to their role in our society
and world, as well as developing reading and writing skills.

Textbook: The Language of Literature: American
Literature, McDougal-Littell © 2002
Course Notebook: You will need a notebook exclusively
for this course. The notebook will be used for
journaling, notes, writing practice, writing drafts of
papers, etc. Each entry in your notebook should
have a title and date. The notebook will be grade
periodically.

Grading
Coursework—Daily written assignments and quizzes used
to help gauge your learning.
Assessments—tests and projects generally occur at the end
of instructional units, approximately 60% of your
overall grade. Each quarter you will be responsible
to compile a writing portfolio.
Academic Honesty—Please review the
Cheating/Plagiarism section in your student

Anyone caught cheating or plagiarizing will receive
a zero on that assignment, and will be punished
according to the student handbook.

You must be in your seat when the bell rings. Anyone
not inside the classroom will be marked tardy. The
student handbook will be followed strictly for all
tardies.
No eating or drinking is permitted inside the classroom.
Anyone found choosing to ignore this rule will be
assigned detention.
At the end of the hour remain in your seat. Please do
not congregate by the door.
If for some emergency you have to leave the classroom,
you must ask permission and use the classroom pass on
the chalkboard.
All other rules can be found in your student
handbook/planner. Please choose to follow them.
Please do not bring any electronic devices to class. If
they are brought to class be sure they are turned off and
out of sight.
Please observe our policy about bags.
