Idaho's Champion Big Tree List January, 2014 Idaho Big Tree Program University of Idaho P.O. Box 441140 Moscow, ID 83844-1140 (208) 885-6356 [email protected] The Idaho Big Tree Program is part of a national program to locate, measure, and recognize the largest individual tree of each species in Idaho. The nominator(s) and owner(s) are recognized with a certificate, and the owners are encouraged to help protect the tree. Most states, including Idaho, keep records of state champion trees and forward contenders to the national program. Some cities, such as Boise and Lewiston, Idaho, also keep local records, and occasionally counties or other organizational units do the same. Lewiston, Coeur d’ Alene, Boise, and other communities also recognize and promote historically significant trees. For a current list of National Champion Trees, go to American Forests - www.americanforests.org/resources/bigtrees/ For Idaho state champions, all native species that meet the minimum tree dimensions are listed. Cultivated trees are listed separately as records are confirmed. Many cultivated species have no recorded Idaho champions; several nationally listed species, Picea engelmannii for example, also have no listed champion. Entries for champions should be for trees of relatively large size for any new species listing, as determined by the Idaho Big Tree Program Director. All Native trees are listed first - cultivated trees follow. Minimum tree dimensions are: 3 inches DBH and 13 feet tall. Identification of challengers must be confirmed. Index points = circumference (inches) + height (feet) + 1/4 average crown spread (feet). Co-champions are declared when there are two trees of the same species within 5 index points of each other.
