Napravnik steers Girvin off
the track at Churchill Downs
under the watchful eyes of
trainer Joe Sharp.
They head back to the barn
together, with Napravnik in
the saddle and Sharp walking
alongside the horse.
Napravnik was once one
of the top jockeys in North
America before retiring. Now
she works as an assistant
trainer and exercise rider for
her husband Sharp, who will
saddle Louisiana Derby winner Girvin in the Kentucky
Derby on Saturday.
“I think the biggest benefit is
the fact that I don’t have to pay
her,” he joked.
After meeting at the racetrack when Napravnik rode a
horse for Sharp, they started
dating and married in 2011.
They split their time between
Louisville in the warm weather months and New Orleans in
the winter.
Away from the racetrack,
the couple has two young sons,
Carson and Tucker.
They’ve has reversed roles
over the last three years.
Napravnik, 29, went from being the celebrity in the relationship — the only woman to
ride in all three Triple Crown
races — to retirement. She
was in the background during
Sharp’s emergence as an upcoming trainer at 32.
“I’ve been asked if Joe was
like my boss, and it’s more like
he’s my mentor,” she said. “A
lot of little things come up, and
he just handles them.”
Sharp said, “We’ve always
had a good balance when it
comes to that. I was always a
big fan.”

extending into the coronary
band, where the hoof meets
the skin of the leg.
Healing time can range from
a few days to a few months, depending on the severity of the
crack.
“My stress is being there with
moral support,” Napravnik
said.
The dark brown colt has
spent more time in a hyperbaric chamber and swimming
than on the track in the weeks
leading up to Saturday’s race.

Sharp said, “but I just have so
LOUISVILLE — Bob Baffert knows a good horse
when he sees one.
And the Hall of Fame
trainer likes what he sees
in Paradise Woods. All he
had to do was watch her run
away from his Abel Tasman
in the Santa Anita Oaks.
“Paradise Woods is an
extremely talented filly,”
said Baffert, who trained
2015 Triple Crown winner
of American Pharaoh. “I
watched her school the other day at Santa Anita and,
wow, she’s imposing. She’s
really, really special.”
She is the 5-2 favorite for
today’s $1 million race for
3-year-old fillies at Churchill
Downs on the day before the
Kentucky Derby.
She has had back-to-back
runaway victories, including an 11-length romp in
the Santa Anita Oaks. The
daughter of Union Rags was
also second in her debut at
the California track. Paradise Woods will start from
the No. 4 post position in the
14-horse field.

the horse as he goes for his
first Oaks win in four tries.

in the animal’s preparation,
training and well-being.
“There’s a little more nerves
involved,” she said. “I’ve
learned so much in the barn.
On the people side, it’s just
been a complete education
and it’s good that Joe is there
to show me some things.”
Sharp spent a year as a jockey himself before becoming an
assistant trainer. In 2014, he
opened his own 70-horse stable the same year Napravnik
retired on the spot after winning the Breeders’ Cup Distaff
while seven weeks pregnant
with her first son.
Napravnik is regularly asked
if she’s planning a comeback.
The answer is no.
“If I was going to come back,
I would’ve done it the day after
the Risen Star and I would’ve
done it with this horse,” she
said, referring to Girvin’s twolength victory in February.
“Before he ran, I was coming off maternity leave and
saw him at the track and how
he galloped, and he was just
beautiful.”
Not so pretty has been
Girvin’s path to the Kentucky
Derby.
He has a quarter crack in his
right front hoof that generated
whispers on the backstretch
and led to the postponement
of his final workout.
Big Brown encountered the
same problem during his failed
2008 Triple Crown bid. Quarter cracks are fairly common,

Brewers over Cards

ST. LOUIS — Jesus Aguilar’s first major league home
run broke a seventh-inning
tie, leading the Milwaukee
Brewers over the banged-up
St. Louis Cardinals 5-4 on
Thursday night.
Cardinals right fielder Stephen Piscotty left the game
after the second inning with a
strained right hamstring and
center fielder Dexter Fowler
came out following the third
with a strained right shoulder. Randal Grichuk moved
from left to center and Aledmys Diaz shifted from shortstop to left in the first outfield
appearance of his professional career.
Piscotty pulled up with a
strained right hamstring after crossing first base on his
grounder to third base that
ended the second. Fowler
was hurt in an unsuccessful
attempt for a diving catch on
Hernan Perez’s third-inning
drive.
Milwaukee won its first series at St. Louis since April
28-30, 2014, ending a streak
of 15 series losses and two
splits.
With the score 4-4, Aguilar
pinch hit for pitcher Oliver
Drake (2-0) and homered
against Matt Bowman (1-1)
in his 100th career big league
at-bat over four seasons.
Keon Broxton had four hits
for the Brewers, including an
RBI double in the third and a
home run in the fifth against
Adam Wainwright that tied
the score 4-4.

LEXINGTON — In basketball
parlance, former Kentucky
player Marcus Lee tested the
waters last year. He entered
his name in the 2016 NBA
Draft. He worked out for two
teams. He participated in the
NBA Combine. He then chose
to withdraw his name and return to college (of course, he
transferred from UK to California).
“It was a very memorable
and enjoyable experience,”
Lee said Wednesday. “I’d recommend it to any college athlete — if you’re ready or not.”
NBA readiness has nothing to do with it. Submitting
your name in the NBA Draft
is a no-risk decision, assuming
the player does not retain the
services of an agent. Hiring an
agent automatically ends college eligibility. If the player
doesn’t like what NBA people
tell him, he can withdraw from
the draft and retain college eligibility.
Beginning last year, players
now have much more time to
ponder the college-or-pro decision. An NCAA rule change
moved the deadline for withdrawing from the draft from
April to 10 days after the NBA
Combine, which is annually in
mid-May.
In what surely was music
to UK Coach John Calipari’s
ears, the later date for withdrawal changed the underlying timetable for “testing the
waters”: from what’s convenient for college coaches to
what helps players make the
most informed decision.
The previous April deadline
to withdraw began in 2012,
and was in reaction to the oneand-done phenomenon.

MVC presidents to convene next Monday
BY EDWARD MARLOWE
[email protected]
Multiple sources have confirmed that the Missouri Valley Conference’s Board of
Presidents will convene Monday evening, with an expected
announcement of its plans for
conference realignment sometime Tuesday.
The nine institutional presidents from Drake, LoyolaChicago, Missouri State, the
University of Northern Iowa,
Indiana State, Southern Illinois, Illinois State, Evansville
and Bradley have the final say
on what invite or invites to
extend to other collegiate programs.
They are considering the
replacement of Wichita State,
which left the Missouri Val-
ley for the American Athletic
Conference in the first week of
April.
Four programs – Murray
State University, Valparaiso,
Nebraska-Omaha and the
University of Milwaukee-Wisconsin – seem to be the most
heavily considered at this time,
but in what order or how many
receive invitations is currently
unknown.
The presidents have a difficult
discussion on their hands, and
could ultimately stand pat with
nine teams, move to 10, expand
to 11, embrace 12 or perhaps
even balloon to 13 by extending
invitations to all programs engaged in this process.
Any announcement following Monday’s process will
have come from a consensus
vote of at least 7-2 – as anything less favorable will fail
on the floor.
If there is no consensus in
the process by late Monday
evening, the discussion will be
tabled.
Should Murray State receive an invitation from the
Missouri Valley, the school’s
Board of Regents would have
to meet publicly to confirm the
invitation and vote in favor of
accepting it.
If the Racers are not part of
the MVC’s plans at this time,
MSU may remain in the Ohio
Valley Conference or entertain
new options that aren’t visible
at this time.
Either way, MSU will know
its next course of action soon
enough.

Rain arrives for start of Derby weekend
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Rain is pelting Churchill
Downs at the start of an expected a three-day
stretch of wet weather leading up to the Kentucky Derby.
The outlook for the Kentucky Oaks on Friday
isn’t encouraging, with a 60 percent chance of
rain forecast.
But there are two silver linings.
The first is that the serious preparations for
the Oaks and Derby contenders are completed,
and the weather wasn’t a factor Thursday morning, with most of the Derby horses out for routine maintenance gallops.
The second is that the rain could end well before the Derby on Saturday. While showers are
forecast in the morning, the storm could move
out before the scheduled post time of 6:46 p.m.
The dirt track at Churchill Downs has a reputation for rapidly draining and drying. While there
undoubtedly will be some residual moisture on
the surface, it might not be a muddy Derby if the
sky clears in time.

2 McMurry athletes charged in killing
ABILENE, Texas — Two NCAA Division III McMurry University football players have been indicted on capital murder charges in the January
killing of a man in Fort Worth, but the grand jury
declined to indict another.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports a Tarrant
County grand jury indicted 20-year-old Dontrell
Dock of Conroe and 18-year-old Brodrick Ross
of Bryan on April 13 in the shooting death of
29-year-old Chris-Dion Russell.
The indictments said Dock and Ross killed
Russell while robbing him at his apartment.
The grand jury declined to indict 21-year-old
Ryan McBeth of Fort Worth, who also had
been arrested.
The three played for the small Methodist
school in Abilene in 2016 and were enrolled
when arrested in January. School officials didn’t
respond to a request to update their enrollment
status.

Bryce Harper leaves game injury
WASHINGTON — Nationals slugger Bryce
Harper left Thursday’s 4-2 win over Arizona after
hurting his left groin and is day to day, according
to Washington manager Dusty Baker.
Harper said he felt the injury while diving to

three more times and was replaced in right field
by Chris Heisey to start the seventh.
Harper went 0 for 3 with a walk and a run. He
is batting .376 with nine homers and 27 RBIs.

L.A. 2024 bid won’t shun
Olympic powerbroker

The second choice is
Miss Sky Warrior, who
is listed at 9-2 and has
won five of six starts,
with four straight graded stakes triumphs.
There was no catching her in last month’s
Grade 2 Gazelle at Aqueduct, where she won
by 13 lengths. She drew
the No. 10 post.
“I don’t know if I
could’ve drawn it up any
better,” trainer Kelly
Breen said. “If they let
me draw the (post position) pills and decide
who went where, the 10
post is probably the best
spot for us. Paco (Lopez) is a great gate rider
with a good head on his
shoulders. He’ll be able
to see what we’re going

Miss Sky Warrior’s
160 points earned toward the Oaks were just

and a third in seven

in a row by a combined
151/2 lengths. Farrell
will make her longest
start from the No. 7
post as the 5-1 co-third
choice with Abel Tasman.
The distance doesn’t
concern Farrell trainer
Wayne Catalano.
“She’s had a few under her belt, so I don’t
think that’s going to be
a problem,” he said.
Abel Tasman has
three wins and two seconds in six starts with

The later deadline for

2016 NBA Draft. That was
nearly three times greater
than the usual number of
early entrants, the NCAA
said. Lee was one of 58
that chose to return to college.
This year’s NBA Draft
drew entries from 137
underclassmen, of which
six came from the University of Kentucky:
freshmen Malik Monk,
De’Aaron Fox and Bam
Adebayo, plus sophomores Isaiah Briscoe and
Isaac Humphries. Then
there’s freshman Hamidou Diallo, who joined
the UK team after the fall
semester with the understanding he would not
play until the 2017-18
season. He chose to test
the waters this spring.
“The basketball landscape is very broad,”
Gavitt said of Diallo’s

Diallo and the other

Wizards crush Celtics 116-89 in foul-filled game
BY STEPHEN WHYNO
Associated Press
WASHINGTON — John
Wall scored 24 points,
Isaiah Thomas was held
to 13 and the Washington
Wizards jumped out to
a hot start and rode it to
a 116-89 victory over the
Boston Celtics in a technical foul-filled Game 3
on Thursday night to cut
their series deficit to 2-1.
The Wizards used a
22-0 first-quarter run
to take a 34-12 lead as
Thomas and the Celtics
kept missing shots and
turning the ball over. The
game was already a blowout in the second when
Washington’s Kelly Oubre
Jr. was ejected for charging and knocking over
Kelly Olynyk after the
Boston big man was called
for an illegal screen.
There were eight technical fouls and three ejections total.
Otto Porter and Bojan
Bogdanovic scored 19
points apiece for Washington, which improved
to 4-0 at home in the playoffs. Washington’s 119
first-quarter points is an
NBA record for the first
three games of a series.
Responding to what
coach
Scott
Brooks
deemed a “bad shooting
night” in Game 2, Bradley
Beal scored Washington’s
first seven points and finished with 11.
Defensively, the Wizards found a solution to
Thomas, who was held
to 13 points on 3-of-8
shooting. Thomas, who
had some dental work adjusted at halftime, scored
seven points at the free
throw line.
The teams built up quite
the hatred during four
regular-season meetings,
and while hard fouls were
part of the first two games
in Boston it was nothing
like Game 3. Double technicals to Ian Mahinmi and
Jonas Jerebko early gave
way to Oubre’s outburst
as he leapt up from the
floor after an illegal screen
from Olynyk and bowled
over the Boston big man
as he was talking to an official.
Oubre could face a suspension for his outburst.
But he wasn’t alone.
Pushing and shoving happened throughout, leading to a barrage
of technical fouls in the
fourth quarter. Stevens
and Brooks each picked
up technical fouls.
After starting 16-0 in
Game 1 and 16-8 in Game 2
and coughing up big leads,
the Wizards extended this
one thanks in part to the
Celtics shooting 35.1 percent from the floor.
Rangers top Senators to tie series

Chris Kreider and Nick
Holden also scored and
Tanner Glass added two
assists for the Rangers,
who have won four consecutive home games
this postseason.
Kyle Turris scored for
Ottawa, and Craig Anderson made 17 saves
before being replaced
by Mike Condon for the
third period. Condon finished with ine stops.

Spurs’ Parker lost for playoffs
BY JON KRAWCZYNSKI
Associated Press
One of Gregg Popovich’s top priorities in the
final weeks of the regular
season was making sure
the San Antonio Spurs
got veteran point guard
Tony Parker healthy and
in rhythm for the playoff
push.
More than seeding or
home-court advantage,
Popovich said, the Spurs
needed Parker in order to stay competitive
against the other heavyweights in the Western
Conference playoffs.
Now that Parker will
miss the rest of the postseason with a leg injury,
the Spurs will be tested
like they rarely have been
before.
The Spurs announced
on Thursday that Parker
has a ruptured quadriceps tendon in his left
leg. The injury will likely
require surgery to repair,
meaning the Spurs will
have to go through the
rest of the postseason
without their floor leader. The injury came as
the Spurs are locked in a
second-round battle with
Houston, a series tied 1-1
with Game 3 on the road
coming up Friday.
“If we don’t have him,
it’s going to be a lot
tougher to hang with
teams like Houston and
Golden State, the Clippers, that kind of thing,”
Popovich told The Associated Press before the
season ended.
While the 34-year-old
Parker is not the dynamic playmaker he was
in his younger days, he
has still been hugely important to what the team
does. After the Spurs
were blown out in Game
1, Parker responded with
18 points in 25 minutes
before getting injured
to help San Antonio re-
bound to even the series.
He appeared to land
awkwardly while taking
a shot with 8:34 to play
Wednesday night and
crumpled to the court.
The Frenchman needed
to be carried off the floor
by teammates, casting a
pall over San Antonio’s
victory.
Popovich said after the
game that it didn’t look
good, and the Spurs’ fears
were confirmed after an
MRI on Thursday. The
team said there is no timetable yet for his recovery.
With
Parker
out,
backup Patty Mills could
move into a starting role
and the Spurs will also
likely give Kawhi Leonard more ball-handling
responsibility.
Rookie
Dejounte Murray is another candidate to see
more playing time.
Perhaps most disappointing is that Parker
had found another gear
in the playoffs after an
underwhelming regular
season, two weeks before
his 35th birthday. His
10.1
points-per-game
average in the regular
season was his lowest
since his rookie year in
2001-02. But he averaged 15.9 points on 53
percent shooting in eight
playoff games, including
a vintage 27-point night
in Game 6 against Memphis to clinch that series.
“If he’s not right or he
can’t play, we’re going to
have a tough time staying with the big boys,”
Popovich said during the
regular season. “When
he’s been healthy we’ve
had a rhythm, he gets
into it defensively and
has set a tone on the perimeter for us along with
Kawhi. His organization
of the team is really important, understanding
time and score, what’s
going on the court.

Road sweet road: LeBron
relishes away playoff games
BY TOM WITHERS
Associated Press
CLEVELAND — For
LeBron James, traveling isn’t a violation, but
rather a delight.
After showing his
passport at the Canadian
border, James will settle
in and take inventory of
his new surroundings in
Toronto on Friday.
The Cleveland Cavaliers star will look into
the crowd at Air Canada
Centre, read a few of
those hand-painted signs
calling him a crybaby or
worse and laugh. He’ll
hear the taunts and find
some amusement in the
echoing chants of “OverRated!” that will surely
rain down upon him.
James will feel the disgust directed at him by
fans, and he’ll embrace
it.
“I just like the adversity of the road,” he said.
“Home cooking is great,
love the home fans for
14 years. But I love playing out on the road more
than I love playing at
home. It’s just a weird
thing.”
His ability to channel
the animosity has resulted in him winning at
least one game in 27 consecutive playoff series,
a record and another
check mark in his favor
in the debate of James’
place in the pantheon of
NBA greats.
It’s also why the Raptors are in big trouble.
Down 2-0 after being bulldozed by James

needs to make some ad-

justments heading into
Game 3 or summer vacation will arrive early
again. James has toyed
with the Raptors to this
point, scoring 39 points
on just 14 shots in Game
2, a performance that left
frustrated Toronto star
DeMar DeRozan to ask
for some assistance.
“If you can find somebody to stop LeBron in
these moments, I’ll give
you $100,” DeRozan
said.
NBA owners might be
willing to fork over much
more than that to stymie
the relentless James,
who has had some of his
biggest playoff moments
on the road:
— In 2007 at the appropriately named Palace, King James scored
48, including 25 straight
and 29 of Cleveland’s last
30 in Game 5 to beat Detroit in the Eastern Conference finals.
— With Miami in 2012,
he saved the Heat from
elimination — and silenced some of his most
boisterous critics — by
scoring 45 points with
15 rebounds in a Game 6
win at Boston, where his
first stint with the Cavs
ended with him yanking
off his jersey following a
season-ending loss.
— And then in last
year’s epic Game 7 of
the Finals, when James
recorded a triple-double
against Golden State, he
had perhaps the signature moment of his career, a late block that delivered Cleveland its first
pro sports championship
in 52 years.
James doesn’t have a
good explanation of why
he thrives on the road.
“I don’t know, man,”
said James, who is 19-0
when leading a series
2-0. “It’s the bunker
mentality of knowing it’s
15 guys plus the coaching staff and whoever
is there that’s traveled
with us against the whole
state and the whole city.”
The whole sports
world is taking notice of
James in these playoffs.
In leading the Cavaliers
to six straight wins, he’s
averaging 34.2 points,
9.2 rebounds, 7.3 assists,
2.7 steals and 1.8 blocks.
He’s shooting 57 percent
from the floor and playing 42.2 minutes per
game.
“I’m feeling pretty
good,” he understated.

Houston Rockets’ James Harden yells after a Oklahoma City Thunder turnover during an April 16 first-round playoff series game in Houston.
Defending Rockets’ Harden
a chess match worth watching
BY CLIFF BRUNT

OKLAHOMA CITY —
Oklahoma City swingman Andre Roberson
often was praised by his
coach and teammates
for playing suffocating
defense on James Harden during their firstround playoff series.
Houston’s MVP candidate still averaged
33.2 points against the
Thunder in the fivegame series.
Harden’s versatility
is a nightmare for top
perimeter defenders in
the league. Crowd him,
and he goes by them.
Play off him to cut off
driving lanes, and he’ll
often raise up and shoot
a 3-pointer.
Then there is Harden’s knack for drawing
contact and getting to
the free throw line — he
averaged 15 foul shots
per game against the
Thunder.
“I think that’s one of
the hardest things, and
I think he’s tough to
guard, but ... I’m going
to just hold back,” Roberson said of guarding
Harden without fouling
him.
So that’s how teams
try to defend Harden —
carefully.
The Spurs kept Harden off the line Wednesday night in Game 2
of their second-round
series with the Rockets, limiting him to
six attempts. Harden
struggled from the floor,
shooting just 3-for-17,
yet he had 10 assists and
seven rebounds.
When one aspect of
his offensive game goes
south, he always has
another option. He’s
6-foot-5 with strength
and quickness to create mismatches. He was

He shot and made more
free throws than anyone
else in the league this
season, and he hit 85

Harden also led the
league in assists.
“He might be the
hardest player to guard
in the entire league,”
Golden State coach
Steve Kerr said.
“If not the hardest,
he’s in the top few because of the problems
he presents you as a
point guard. A guy with
that kind of size, ability
to shoot threes, gets to
the rim and he’s a brilliant passer.”
That’s the typical
scene watching a Rockets game: defenders who
prefer to be aggressive
with their hands up in
the air, seemingly waiting to react to Harden’s
next move.

Associated Press
Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Ringmaster Kristen Michelle Wilson
performs on Jan. 14 in Orlando, Fla.
Ringling’s final circus to be
on Facebook Live May 21
BY TAMARA LUSH
Associated Press
ST.
PETERSBURG,
Fla. — Ringling Bros.
and Barnum & Bailey
Circus first wowed audiences in the 19th century.
For the iconic American spectacle’s final act,
it will broadcast the final
performance on a 21st
century medium: Facebook Live.
The company told The
Associated Press this
week that the final circus
show on the evening of
May 21 will be streamed
live on the social media
network and on the circus’s website.
The final performance
will be in Uniondale,
New York.
Earlier this year, Feld
Entertainment,
the
company that owns the
iconic circus, announced
that the show would end
in May.
The circus’s decline
happened due to a variety of factors.
Declining attendance,
combined with high
operating costs, changing public tastes and
prolonged battles with
animal rights groups all
contributed to its demise.
Sam Gomez, the circus’s vice president of
digital and relationship
marketing, said Ringling
did something similar,
although on a smaller
scale, during the final elephant act performance
in 2016.
During that broadcast
on Facebook, Ringling
showed a pre-recorded
intro, then cut to the live
act.
For the May 21 show,
the entire performance
will be broadcast live
from start to finish and
will be hosted by Kristen
Michelle Wilson, Ringling’s first female ringmaster.
Organizers have taken
into consideration that
most people will probably tune in on phones
or tablets.
“It’s basically a TV
shoot and we’re certainly thinking about lighting and sound,” said Gomez. “How will this look
when you’re looking at it
on your phone or your
tablet? We’ve had lots
of conversations about
tight shots so you can
see the performer’s skill
and expressions and
their artistry.”
Gomez said Ringling
will leave the video up
for a short while — it’s
unclear how long — but
not forever.
The live show allows
people to “witness the
end of an era.”
“We wanted to give
families around the
world one last chance to
experience ‘the greatest
show on earth’ together,” he said.
Ringling Bros. has two
touring circuses; one will
perform for four nights
in Providence, Rhode Island, starting Thursday
and ending for good in
that city on Sunday.
The other touring
show will end at the Nassau County Coliseum in
New York on May 21.
The circus, with its exotic animals, flashy costumes and death-defying acrobats, has been a
staple of entertainment
in the United States
since the mid-1800s.
Phineas Taylor Barnum
made a traveling spectacle of animals and human oddities popular,
while the five Ringling
brothers performed juggling acts and skits from
their home base in Wisconsin.
Eventually,
they
merged and the modern
circus was born.
‘Halo: Combat Evolved’ among
four video game HOF inductees
BY CAROLYN
THOMPSON
Associated Press
ROCHESTER, N.Y. —
Attention Halo Nation,
“Halo: Combat Evolved”
is in the World Video
Game Hall of Fame.
The science fiction
shooter game that enthralled a legion of fans
after its 2001 launch
with the Xbox system is
one of four games to be
inducted into the hall
Thursday.
“Donkey
Kong,”
‘‘Pokemon Red and
Green” and “Street
Fighter II” round out the
young hall’s third class
of honorees.
All will be on permanent display at The
Strong
museum
in
Rochester, New York,
where the hall of fame
was established in 2015
to recognize an industry
that the Entertainment
Software
Association
said generated $30.4
billion in revenue in the
U.S. last year.
“Until ‘Halo’s’ launch,
the most successful
shooters required a personal computer and the
precision offered by a
high-quality
mouse,”
said Strong Associate
Curator Shannon Symonds. “‘Halo’ proved a
console could be just as
effective, if not better,
than a PC.”
More than half of the
Microsoft Xbox consoles initially sold included the launch game
and players gave it high
marks for its intricate
storyline,
characters
like Master Chief and
multi-player
capability. The self-described
“Halo Nation” of fans
that emerged bought up
6 million copies, along
with sequels, spinoffs,
books and action figures.
An international committee of video game
scholars and journalists chose the World
Video Game Hall of
Fame’s class of 2017
from among 12 finalists
that also included: “Final Fantasy VII,” ‘‘Microsoft Windows Solitaire,” ‘‘Mortal Kombat,”
‘‘Myst,” ‘‘Portal,” ‘‘Resident Evil,” ‘‘Tomb Raider” and “Wii Sports.”
Inductees were chosen
based on their longevity
and impact on the video
game industry and pop
culture. Nominations of
arcade, computer, console, hand-held and mobile games came in from
more than 100 countries, The Strong said.
Twenty years before
“Halo,” fellow inductee
“Donkey Kong” was a
star of arcades and at
the time of its 1981 release, Nintendo’s most
profitable game to date.
Even more notable than
its sale of an estimated
132,000 arcade cabinets
is the game’s launch of
the plumber character
Mario, who led the spinoff “Super Mario Bros.”
into the hall of fame’s inaugural class.
Another Nintendo entry, “Pokemon Red and
Green,” was released on
the Game Boy in 1996
as “Pocket Monsters.”
With the catchphrase
“Gotta catch ’em all!”
players were challenged
to collect 151 unique
monsters, which soon
migrated to 21.5 billion
trading cards, 800 television episodes and 17
movies.
“‘Pokemon Red and
Green’ launched a franchise that has taken the
world by storm, vaulting
many of its characters,
such as Pikachu, into
popular,
mainstream
culture,” Symonds said.
Capcom’s
“Street
Fighter II” is credited
with helping to spark an
arcade renaissance in
the 1990s, The Strong
said.
Dear Annie: On a
recent
out-of-town
excursion to do some
shopping and planning
for a new bathroom
installation, we found
ourselves in a very annoying predicament.
We stopped for
lunch at a very nice
restaurant, only to
be assaulted by loud
music the second we
walked in. Thankfully,
the waitress honored
our request and did
turn it down so we
could enjoy a nice leisurely lunch.
Then it was on to
the big-box store for a
major purchase — only
to be assaulted once
again by extremely
loud music the minute we stepped inside.
Needless to say, the
measurements
and
planning were extremely difficult, as it
was hard to think because of the noise. An
employee there said it
was beyond his control and that there was
nothing that could be
done. We walked out.
That store lost a nice
sale because of this.
This never used to be
a problem.
Can’t retailers think
and play quiet background music or none
at all? Most people
have things on their
Dear
Annie
minds when shopping.
Maybe someone reading this letter will “get”
it. Noise pollution is not
healthy indoors, for sure.
— Nancy
Dear Nancy: I hear
you loud and clear.
When I walk into
a store or restaurant and the music
is blasting, I tend
to turn right back
around. And we’re
not alone. In a study
by consumer marketing blog Triggerpulling, loud music
shortened the average consumer’s shopping time. Though
I have no practical
advice to give (short
of perhaps keeping
some earplugs handy
in your purse), I’m
printing this as a
plea to retailers and
restaurateurs alike:
Please, keep it down.
Dear Annie: I am a
faithful reader of the column and felt compelled
to write in because I can
really relate to “Deep in
Dishes,” whose roommate isn’t cleaning up after herself in the kitchen.
I shared an apartment
with two dear friends
during college. Two of us
were “clean freaks” and
did our dishes daily. Our
third, just like the roommate “Deep in Dishes”
wrote about, left hers for
days, forgot they were
hers and then refused to
do them. Plates, frying
pans with stuck-on food,
etc. — they’d sit in the
sink for days.
Please tell “Deep in
Dishes” to put anything
left unwashed overnight
by “Wendy” in a small
plastic tub and leave it
on her bed. The kitchen
will be clean, and Wendy
won’t be able to deny
they are hers. And if she
leaves them in the sink
again without washing
them, they should reappear on her bed the next
day. Worked like a charm
for us.
By the way, 30 years
later, we are still close
friends and laugh about
this! — Debbie H.
Dear Debbie: I
hear so many stories
about how living together has caused
falling-outs and ruined friendships. It’s
refreshing to hear
from someone who
didn’t let roommate
problems sink a great
friendship.

Jann S. Wenner reflects on
50 years of Rolling Stone
BY HILLEL ITALIE
Associated Press
NEW YORK — Fifty
years after he launched
an underground newspaper that changed
music journalism and
a great deal more, Jann
S. Wenner finds Rolling
Stone being showcased
in a once-unthinkable
forum: a museum.
“At least it’s a museum I own,” Wenner
said with a laugh during a recent telephone
interview as he anticipated an anniversary
exhibition at the Rock
and Roll Hall of Fame
and Museum in Cleveland, an institution
that Wenner helped
found in the 1980s. The
three-floor
“Rolling
Stone/50 years” exhibit
opens Friday and runs
through late November.
There might not
have been a Rock Hall
or museum without
Rolling Stone, which
as much as anybody
moved rock and the
lifestyle around it from
the fringes to the mainstream. Rolling Stone
not only chronicled mu-
sic, politics and culture,
but it also helped change
it, whether through
Wenner’s revelatory 1970
interview with John Lennon, the photography
of Annie Leibovitz or
the “gonzo” reporting of
Hunter S. Thompson.
Among those getting early starts at Rolling Stone
were Leibovitz, Thompson, the music critics
Greil Marcus and Lester
Bangs, screenwriter Joe
Eszterhas and filmmaker
Cameron Crowe.
The common thread
among the best Rolling
Stone contributors has
been “extraordinary talent,” Wenner says, along
with a “sense of purpose”
and a distinctive way of
“seeing our times.”
The exhibit and accompanying coffee-table
book capture some of the
highlights: Thompson’s
scathing coverage of the
1972 presidential campaign, the serialization of
Tom Wolfe’s “The Bonfire of the Vanities” and
Michael Hastings’ scandalously candid 2010
profile of Gen. Stanley
McChrystal, leading to
his departure as com-
mander of U.S. troops in
Afghanistan. Many of the
photographs are indelible
to at least one generation:
Meryl Streep in greasepaint, tugging at her
cheek; Bette Midler in a
bed of roses; the men and
women of Fleetwood Mac
laid out on a single mattress; and most painfully,
a naked Lennon clinging
to a fully clothed Yoko
Ono, a Leibovitz portrait
taken just hours before
Lennon was shot dead in
1980.
Wenner was only 21
when he and his friend
and mentor Ralph J.
Gleason started Rolling
Stone from a San Francisco warehouse in 1967,
the first issue dating from
November of that year.
Youth tycoons are common now, but 50 years
ago it was rare for someone Wenner’s age to be
running any business, at
least one that hoped to
make money. His hope
then was to bring attention to the music he loved
and how it was changing
the culture, changes he
believed were ignored
or belittled by the mainstream media.
‘Happy Days’ cast remember Erin Moran
Associated Press
The cast of “Happy
Days” has briefly reunited to remember
cast mate Erin Moran,
who died at her Indiana home last month.
A photo shared online shows Ron Howard, Marion Ross,
Don Most, Anson Williams, Cathy Silvers
and Scott Baio posing
together.
Ross, who played
Moran’s
on-screen
mother, tells Entertainment
Tonight
that the gathering
took place Tuesday at
her California home,
known as “Happy
Days Farm.” She says
it wasn’t a formal memorial service.
The actress died at
56 on April 22 at her
home in southern Indiana. Authorities say cancer was the most likely
cause of death. Baio
shared a letter from Moran’s husband last week
detailing her struggle
with the disease.
Moran played teen
Joanie
Cunningham
on “Happy Days” and
its short-lived spinoff,
“Joanie Loves Chachi.”

Economists predict that hiring in
the U.S. rebounded in April after
a steep drop the previous
month.
They expect the Labor
Department will report on Friday
that nonfarm employers added
185,000 jobs in April. That
would represent an increase
from March, when the economy
added just 98,000 jobs. In the
first three months of this year,
employers added an average of
178,000 jobs a month.

Oil and gas tracker
New data should provide insight into how much credit
consumers are using.
Consumers stepped up their borrowing in February as a
rebound in the use of credit
cards offset a slowdown in
auto and student loans. Total
borrowing rose $15.2 billion,
the biggest gain in three
months. That gain in February
pushed total consumer credit
to a record $3.79 trillion. The
Federal Reserve reports its
consumer borrowing data for
March today.
Oilfield services company Baker
Hughes issues today its latest
weekly tally of U.S. oil and natural
gas rigs.
Last week, the number of rigs
rose to 870. That tally included 697
rigs exploring for oil and 171 seeking
natural gas. Two were listed as
miscellaneous. The rig count has
been rebounding steadily since last
year after a protracted slide caused
by declining oil prices. The U.S. rig
count peaked at 4,530 in 1981. It
bottomed out in May 2016 at 404.

Chief Executive James Park said the results gave him
“increased confidence” for the second half of the year.
Fitbit forecast sales of $1.5 billion to $1.7 billion this
year, well below the $2.17 billion it made
in 2016. In March the company replaced
two top executives and announced a
re-organization aimed at returning to
profit.
Fitbit shares, which lost nearly half their
value after a profit warning last November,
closed up 12.1 percent Thursday at $6.37.

Shares in fitness tracker Fitbit leaped sharply higher
Thursday as investors cheered the San Francisco
company’s smaller-than-expected quarterly loss.
The 10-year-old company
reported a loss of $60.1 million in
the first quarter, or 15 cents a share
on an adjusted basis. Analysts had
forecast a loss of 18 cents a share.
Sales also plunged, but less than
analysts had expected.

“It would have a chilling effect on small
shareholders’ ability to effect change,” says John
Roe, head of ISS Analytics at Institutional Shareholder Services, a firm that advises investors on
company votes.
Roughly a third of proposals — from individual
shareholders — wouldn’t make the cut to be voted
on, he estimates.
It isn’t clear whether the bill
in its current form will
ultimately become law.
In recent years, shareholders have voted on companies’ political campaign
spending, protecting
employees from discrimination, climate change, arms
sales and food safety.

New Republican legislation is advancing in the
U.S. House to unwind the stricter regulations that
came in after the 2008 financial crisis. The
sweeping bill would ease crucial rules governing
banks, Wall Street and financial companies.
Tucked deep inside the 500-page bill is a
narrowly focused provision that steps into the
world of shareholder activism and company annual
meetings. The provision
would make it harder for
individuals or groups of
shareholders to put
proposals for company policy
changes to a vote by all
shareholders. To submit a
proposal, you’d have to hold
more of the company’s
outstanding stock than
currently and to have held it
