For the first time in history, an entire collection of all 54 silver coins and 57 gold coins from the historic Carson City Mint will be offered for sale in a single auction—including the rarest of all— the Unique 1873-CC No Arrows Liberty Seated dime. The unique 1873-CC No Arrows Liberty Seated dime is the only surviving example from a mintage of 12,400 coins. All others were probably destroyed after the Mint Act of February 12, 1873, which modified the weight standard for the U.S. dime. This coin is thought to have escaped destruction because it was reserved for inspection by the Assay Commission in Philadelphia. The coin was retained in the Philadelphia Mint for many years, perhaps as part of the U.S. Mint Collection. Its existence was unknown to collectors until 1909, when it was sold into the collection of William H. Woodin. Only twice has all 111 regular-issue coins from the historic Carson City Mint been assembled and held intact by one individual. The first was by the legendary Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., whose collection was split among his heirs and sold through three different auctions between 1982 and 1997 by Bowers and Merena. Now this privately held set, assembled on behalf of an anonymous collector by Rusty Goe, the premier expert in Carson City coins and the history of the Carson City Mint, has finally become available. Branded by Goe in honor of “The Battle Born State,” Nevada, the Battle Born Collection celebrates the historic Carson City Mint and commemorates both the rich Comstock Lode and the American Old West. The Finest Available Carson City Ex amples With an average grade of approximately 63 out of 70 (on the 1-70 numeric grading scale for U.S. coins), the Battle Born Collection includes many of the highest-graded Carson City coins ever assembled—never before have so many of the finest examples of these rare and eagerly sought Carson City Mint coinage been available to collectors at one time. 72 of the 111 Battle Born coins are graded in the top two tiers of the condition census. Among these are 20 finest-known examples and 30 coins tied for finest-known. Three are second-finest known, and 19 are tied for second-finest known. Timeline of a Unique Dime from the Philadelphia Mint along with several crates of patterns and other coins for two 1877 gold half unions in the collection of prominent industrialist and later Secretary of the Treasury William H. Woodin. 1900s Traded 1909 H. O. Granberg displayed the dime at the American Numismatic Society Exhibit in New York City. 1915 Granberg consigned the dime to Wayte Raymond’s “Collection of a Prominent American” sale, where it was acquired by New York numismatist Rudolph “Rud” Kohler for $170. Famous Baltimore collector, Waldo C. Newcomer, bought the dime in 1915. In 1933, Texas dealer B. Max Mehl sold 1915–1950 the dime, on behalf of Newcomer, to Cincinnati businessman Charles M. Williams. 1950 Consigned by Charles Williams as part of the collection of Hollywood star Adolphe Menjou. Sold for $3,650 to James Kelly and Sol Kaplan, who outbid Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. On November 7, the two sold the coin to Eliasberg for $4,000, allowing him to complete his collection of every U.S. coin minted to date. 1996 Sold at auction by Bowers and Merena as part of the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection for $550,000 to noted collector Waldo E. “Pat” Bolen. Bolen had recently sold a nearly complete set of every dime produced by the U.S. Mint, excluding the 1873-CC No Arrows. When the Eliasberg sale was announced, he purchased the dime just for the pleasure of knowing that he had owned the rarest U.S. dime in history. He then built a complete 11-piece 1873-CC set around the linchpin No Arrows dime. 1914 2000s 1999 One of Only Five Surviving Examples 1873-CC Liberty Seated Quarter, No Arrows MS-64 PCGS One of 60 Known Pieces 1870-CC Liberty Double Eagle AU-53 NGC One of 19 Known SurvivORS 1876-CC twenty-cent piece The Single Finest CC Mint Gold Coin In Existence, of Any Type 1876-CC Liberty Half Eagle MS-64 PCGS, CAC MS-66 PCGS, CAC Official Auctioneer of the ANA World’s Fair of Money August 1– 11, 2012 • Philadelphia, PA Sold at auction for $632,500. 2004 Consigned to Bowers and Merena and sold alongside Jim Gray’s North Carolina Collection, where it was acquired for $891,250 by Carson City Mint specialist Rusty Goe, who sold the coin privately into the Battle Born Collection for an undisclosed sum. 2012 Consigned to Stack’s Bowers Galleries and expected to fetch a historic sum as part of the August 2012 ANA World’s Fair of Money Auction.
