Thomatal-Schönfeld – my nature paradise
Salzburger Lungau is characterized by distinctive traditions and high levels of biodiversity.
Though this statement might at first sound somewhat dry and aloof, the region is actually one of the most beautiful natural settings in SalzburgerLand. The word “biosphere”
denotes an area that provides a valuable habitat for people, the environment, business,
as well as folk customs and traditions. Austria’s third, and largest biosphere reserve,
Salzburger Lungau is a model region for sustainable development.
For holidaymakers, this designation guarantees authentic holiday experiences: Those
who value deeply-rooted traditions and ecological diversity will feel right at home here.
The location, between the mountains of the Radstädter Tauern and Carinthian Nockberge,
also means that the Lungau is sheltered from the prevailing winds, there is barely any fog,
while the air and water are of the highest quality imaginable.
Thomatal enjoys an idyllic valley setting, surrounded by fields, pastures and forests. In the center of town is St. George’s parish church, where Valentin Pfeifenberger served as pastor until
2004, widely known as the „Bishop of Lungau“.
The life of the village and its some 330 permanent residents is shaped by agriculture. Great
store is placed in the preservation of cultural monuments – attested to by the Bundschuh ore
smelter and its newly remodeled museum, as well as the Edenfest castle ruins, which were
only excavated in 1999.
St. George’s parish church, a jewel and testimony to many different architectural periods, houses an organ and a clock, both of which are some of the oldest in the province.
The people of Thomatal are proud of their works of art which, from the village square (1,040
m) all the way to Schönfeld (1,740 m), blend harmoniously with the surrounding countryside.
Romantic lakes, mountain huts, the remains of ancient mines, along with food & drink served
at hospitable eateries, all await young and old alike during their hike through the gentle, impressive mountain landscapes of the Nockberge.
Schönfeld is a family-friendly summer and winter recreation area, located at 1,740 m above
sea level, offering countless opportunities to reenergize, such as alpine skiing, ski touring, ice
stock, sledding, hiking and more. A special highlight in Schönfeld is the 24 km-long network of
alpine XC trails, guaranteed to thrill all the true-blue winter sports fans.
Thomatal, the southernmost community in Lungau, lies in the middle of the Three-Corners Region of Salzburg-Styria-Carinthia, and is easily reached via the A10 Tauern Autobahn.

Winter Magic & Summer Variety
There are practically no limits to the winter activities possible in Salzburger Lungau: Due
to reliable snow conditions, fun on the pistes lasts from the end of November until long
into springtime. The Katschberg-Aineck, Grosseck-Speiereck, Fanningberg and Obertauern
ski areas, numerous cross-country trails groomed for classic and “skating” technique, and
the various opportunities for ski touring, sledding, ice climbing, ice skating and snowshoeing, provide the perfect foundation for an active winter vacation.
In summer, it is time to lace up those hiking boots and explore the summits and alpine
meadows of Riedingtal Zederhaus Nature Park, Weisspriachtal, the Carinthian Nockberge
or the Schladminger Tauern. Whether on “Pathways of Legend” or “From Tarn to Tarn”:
Numerous huts and wonderful views invite you to stop in, pause and appreciate the joy of
every single moment. If you prefer to feel a bit of a headwind in your face, you will probably
want to hop right up onto the saddle of a road bike, mountain bike or e-bike. The selection
of other activities is enormous, too, including golf, climbing, paragliding and horseback
riding.
