1967: stopped the arms race spreading to outer space, no nuclear
weapons could be placed in space by either superpower.
1968: agreed that neither superpower would supply nuclear weapons
to other states or help other states to develop nuclear weapons.
(Strategic Arms Limitation Treaty) 1972: imposed limits on the nuclear
developments of the USSR and USA.

1975: an agreement with terms surrounding security, co-operation and
human rights of 35 countries.
April 1978: the overthrow of the Afghanistan government for a
Communist one.

USSR.
After a Civil War between Communist and Muslims, became the Prime
Minister of the USSR (as well as Head of the Army).
An Afghani Communist who argued that he could reclaim the country
back from the Muslim rebels with Soviet help.

Response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan taking steps to try and
remove Soviet troops from the country.
A restriction on trade with another country.
1. Signed by Carter and Brezhnev in June 1979 but it response to the
Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, it never became law.
1980: Boycott led by UAS of around sixty countries.
Set up by the US as an alternative to the boycotted Moscow Olympics.
1984: the USSR and 14 Communist countries refused to attend.
1979-85: a period which marked a new low in superpower relations.

(Intermediate Range Nuclear Forces) Dec 1987: eliminated all nuclear
missiles with a range of 500-5500 kilometres.

1989: Meeting between Gorbachev and Bush – worked on agreements
that were to be CFE and START 1.
1990: set limits to the non-nuclear forces that the Warsaw Pact and
NATO could have in Europe.
1991: set limits to the numbers of nuclear weapons.
Organised a coup which temporarily removed Gorbachev from power.
