PRECIOUS BLOOD CHURCH
JASPER, INDIANA
From the Pastor
Dear Parishioners,
Recently several people asked me about Mass intentions. I
thought that I would spend some time to explain this tradition of
our faith. An individual may ask a priest to offer a Mass for a
reason: for example, the repose of the soul of someone who has
died. One must never forget the infinite graces that flow from the
Sacrifice of the Mass which benefit one’s soul.
Pope Leo XIII in his encyclical "Mirae caritatis" (1902) beautifully elaborated this point and emphasized the connection between the communion of saints with the Mass: "The grace of
mutual love among the living, strengthened and increased by the
sacrament of the Eucharist, flows, especially by virtue of the Sacrifice [of the Mass], to all who belong to the communion of
saints, that includes the living and dead. For the communion of
saints offer prayers for one another at the Mass assisting each
other with our prayer. Keep in mind that the tradition of offering
Masses for others, particularly the dead, originates in the very
early Church.
When a priest offers Holy Mass, he has three intentions: First, to
offer the Mass reverently and validly in accord with the norms of
the Church. Second, to offer the Mass in union with the whole
Church and for the good of the whole Church. Third, to offer the
Mass for a particular intention, such as the repose of the soul of
someone who has died.
The special ministerial fruits of the Mass are applied to the particular intention of the Mass, i.e. "for whom the Mass is offered."
When I arrived at Precious Blood we did not have enough Mass
intentions, other area parishes provided us a supply of intentions.
However, I feel that we have enough people here to offer our
own Mass intentions. Please contact the Parish Office to set up
Masses for your loved ones.
The following are guidelines for scheduling Mass intentions. Masses can be scheduled for a loved 365 days in advance. This directive comes from Canon Law # 953: “No one is
permitted to accept more offerings for Masses than can be satisfied within a year. Masses may be satisfied within 365 days from
the acceptance of the offering.” Parishes are to encourage the
Catholic faithful to remember the deceased through Mass offerings or memorial gifts.
A Mass intention can be for a parishioner as well as a nonparishioner. A Mass intention can be for a person, couple, or a
family. Extra Masses are sent away to our missionaries or retired
priests. The suggested stipend for each Mass is $10.00 as of December 2, 2007.
Yours in Christ,
Fr. Gary E. Kaiser

REPORT AND INFORM POLICY
Who Are The Saints?
St. Mary Mazzarello (1837 -1881) Founder of the Salesian Sisters who aimed to do for girls what Don Bosco
had done for boys, Mary was born into a peasant family
and spent her early years working in the fields. Despite
her limited education, Mary was known for her management skills, her gentleness, and her general happiness.
She died at the young age of forty-four. Exhibiting humorous coolness when facing death, St. Mary remarked
to the priest who had given her the last rites: “Well, that’s
the passport. I expect I can leave any time now.” Her life
of utter devotion to the will of God and love for others
continues to serve as an example of dedication and holiness. St. Mary was beatified on November 20, 1938 and
canonized on June 24, 1951. (Resources used: wit and

The Diocese of Evansville has in place a policy which requires
that any allegation of child abuse must be reported to civil authorities.
If an allegation involves the sexual abuse of a minor by diocesan
personnel, the Victims Assistance Coordinator must also be informed.
Sexual misconduct violates human dignity and the mission of the
Church. The spiritual well-being of all victims, their families, and others in the community is of particular concern to the Church.
Report child abuse:
Every allegation of child abuse must be reported to Child
Protection Services, an agency of Indiana state government.
CPS Toll-free: (800) 800-5556;
Local law enforcement: 9-1-1
Report and inform:
In the event of an allegation of sexual abuse of a minor
(a person under 18) by diocesan personnel, report the allegation to
authorities, and inform the Victims Assistance Coordinator for the diocese:
Toll-free: (866) 200-3004; Local: (812) 490-9565.
Trivia Answer: (D) Declaration of Independence.
Charles Carroll (1737-1832) was one of the
Founding Fathers of the United States. In 1827, in
his old age, he helped create the Baltimore and
Ohio Railroad. Monopoly players recognize the rail
as the “B & O Railroad.”
