2.
A lizard is an animal
that has a scaly body,
four legs, and a long
tail. Lizards have
backbones and
breathe with lungs.
4.
There are many kinds
of lizards. Most
lizards live in warm
parts of the world. No
lizards live where it is
cold all the time.
6.
A lizard is a coldblooded animal. This
means that its body
will warm up and cool
down with the outside
air. Lizards depend on
the sun to stay warm.
8.
Lizards come in all
shapes and sizes. The
Gila Monster has a fat
body and stores fat in
its tail. It can go
without food for many
months in the desert.
10.
Some lizards have
very small legs or no
legs at all. A glass
lizard is a kind of
lizard with no legs at
all. It looks like a
snake, but it has
movable eyelids.
12.
Most lizards can see
and hear very well.
Lizards have ear
openings on the sides
of their heads. Lizards
have movable eyelids
to protect their eyes.
14.
Some lizards have a
“third eye”, a tiny
hole on the top of the
head that helps them
know how long to stay
in the sun.
16.
Some lizards have
very small and grainy
scales. Other lizards
have large plate-like
scales. Lizard scales
may be smooth or they
may have little ridges
called keels.
18.
Most lizards eat
plants, worms, and
insects. Some lizards
can shoot their tongue
out beyond their nose
to catch insects on the
tip.
20.
Most lizards hatch
from eggs. Some
lizards are born live.
A mother lizard does
not care for its baby
lizards when they are
born. Lizards today
live very much like
dinosaurs, the lizards
of long ago.
