DIVISION OF AERONAUTICS.
Appointment of Officer to Engines Section.
PPLICATIONS are invited for appointment to a position
on the staff
the Council's Division of Aeronautics,
Melbourne. The appointee will be required to carry out
research and development work on internal combustion engines
and to take charge of a small fuel laboratory where knock rating and other tests on motor spirit and other liquid fuels
are performed.
An applicant should hold a University degree in mechanical
engineering and should have had some experience in fuel technology; or a University degree in science with chemistry as
a major subject and should have had subsequent experience
in internal combustion engineering.
The position will be classified as that of a Research Officer
or of an Assistant Research Officer, dependent on the qualifications of the appointee-on which qualifications the commencing salary within the ranges for these classifications
will also depend.
The Research Officer classification rises from £520 to £600
per annum (nominal) with four equal increments, the first
of which is automatic and the last three discretionary. The
Assistant Research Officer classification rises from £356 to
£500 per annum (nominal) by eight equal increments, the
first four automatic and the last four discretionary. The
present equivalent of these ranges after cost -of-living adjust ment are £560 to £640 per annum and £396 to £540 per
annum respectively.

óf Assistant Research Officer on the staff of the Council's
Lubricants and Bearings Section; Melbourne, for investigations
on high speed chemical reactions by photographic and other
means.
An applicant should hold a University degree in science
with physics or physical chemistry as a major subject and
should preferably have had post-graduate research experience.
The Assistant Research Officer classification ranges in salary

APPLICATIONSS are invited for the position of Officer-in-
Charge Flax Research Laboratory. The salary will be
from £900 -£1,200 per annum according to the qualifications
and experience of the appointee.
.An applicant should possess a degree in science or engineering and have had experience in the planning and carrying
out of research. Experience in problems associated with the
processing and manufacturing of flax will be an added
qualification.
It is proposed to erect, a laboratory for the purpose of
investigating the problems associated with the retting and
processing of flax fibre, and the utilization of the resultant
fibre for spinning into flax yarn. The work may include
fundamental physical and chemical studies on the flax fibre,
and research into technological processes ; and the practical
application of the results to manufacturing operations.
The duties of the Officer -in-Charge would he to assist in the
planning, equipment, and staffing of the Laboratory. to plan
the researches on general lines, and to be responsible for the
supervision of them.
Subject to a satisfactory medical examination, the successful
applicant will be eligible to contribute to, and receive benefits
from, either the Commonwealth Superannuation Fund or the
Commonwealth Provident Fund.
