Tokyo Tech Summer Program 2017 FAQ
<Flights and Airline Tickets>
I want to book my flight to/from Japan. Which airport is the most convenient to access
Tokyo Tech or my accommodation?
Haneda International Airport is located in Tokyo, so it is more convenient because it is closer,
but you can easily access central Tokyo from Narita International Airport in Chiba using an

<From the Airport>
Is there any airport pick-up service provided by Tokyo Tech?
Tokyo Tech does not provide such a service; however, once your accommodation is finalized,
we will send you detailed information regarding how to travel from Narita or Haneda Airport

Tokyo Tech Summer Program 2017 FAQ
<Payment>
When and how should I pay the program fee?
The program fee indicated on the website includes both the accommodation fee and
activity/registration fee, and students are asked to pay the two separately.
We will notify students of the online payment instructions in mid- to late April.
<Insurance>
I have insurance in my home country. Do I still have to purchase insurance in Japan?
Yes. All Summer Program students are required to purchase the following types of insurance
which are included in the activity/registration fee.
- Disaster and Accident Insurance for Students (GAKKENSAI) Cost: 1,000JPY
- Personal Liability Insurance for Students (GAKKENBAI) Cost: 340JPY
The two student insurance plans above cover accidents occurring during regular curricular
activities, school events or extracurricular activities. They do not cover illness or any personal
activities/trips outside of the program.
To cover illness and non-program-related activities, Tokyo Tech requires that you also
purchase overseas travel insurance before leaving your home country.
<Buddy/Tutor>
Is there buddy/tutor at Tokyo Tech who will help me to adjust to campus life at Tokyo
Tech?
There is no buddy/tutor system for Summer Program students, but we will recruit Tokyo Tech
students to serve as volunteers on the first day of your program. The students will guide you
to the campus and provide support and general information.
Though there will be no buddy/tutor for students on an individual basis, Summer Program
staff, lab mates or Tokyo Tech volunteer students will be happy to assist whenever you need
help.
<Cost of Living >
How much money should I bring to cover a month’s expenses for food, commuting and
living?
Most students report that they spend more than 80,000 yen/month on living expenses, but
the amount may vary depending on how much you spend on travel, sight-seeing and eating
out.
For reference, the train commuter pass will cost about 4,000 yen/month.
Before coming to Japan, be sure to contact your credit card company to notify them of your
travel plans and confirm that you can use your card overseas.
