Students will develop their learning through completing a map comparison and creating a popup map about the dictators of Europe Students will APPLY their new knowledge by creating Facebook pages for each dictator. Topic: Totalitarianism Vocabulary Essential Question: What is totalitarianism and how does it compare to other forms of government? Totalitarianism One leader controls all aspects (parts) of people's lives. Based off a system of laws. Based off an ideology or belief system (master race, superior culture, superior form of government). This requires unquestioning loyalty to the state and is also founded by Nationalism. Republic Rule by Representative: Representatives of the population make the decisions and laws. Ex: Rome Democracy Direct rule by the people: Citizens directly control the day to day governing of the group/city/country Ex: Athens (if you were a white male) Democratic Republic A system of government in which the people elect representatives to make the decisions regarding the country. Ex: USA (this is what we are. We are NOT a democracy, we are a democratic republic) Anarchy Rule by the none. Every man for themselves with no system of government. Political Party (Do not write down) A group made up of people with similar political views that seek to influence public policy and gain political power. Totalitarian State A single party controls the government and all aspects of the people’s lives. Fascism A dictatorship that is nationalist and racist. There is private property but the government owns all industries. Nazism Germany’s political party formed by Hitler. National Socialist Worker’s Party (NAZI is an acronym for it in German). Benito Mussolini (Il Duce) Dictator of Italy. Formed the Fascist party in 1919. Promises to revive the economy and restore the glory of the roman empire. Invades Ethiopia and Albania. Adolf Hitler (Der Fuhrer) Dictator of Germany. Rose to power in 1933 and was a member of the Nazi Party: Uses Jews as scapegoats for Germany’s problems. Joseph Stalin Dictator of the Soviet Union (Russia). Communist: Rose to power in 1924 General Francisco Franco Fascist. Comes to power in a civil war (was supported by the Germans and Italians.) Neutral in WWII. General Hideki Tojo and Emperor Hirohito Militarists with total control. Prime minister Tojo and militarists control the country and begin to invade other countries for resources.
