6.5 Parametric Equations
Name: ____________________
Objectives: Students will be able to graph equations in parametric
form, eliminate the parameter and solve real-world problems using
parametric equations.
Example Graph the parametric equation x = 3t - 2 and y = t + 1 for t
in the interval [0,3].
t
x = 3t - 2
y = t + 10

Example Graph x = t - 3, y = 1/t for t in (-∞,∞). Use your graphing
calculator

Examples Eliminate the parameter and identify the graph of each
pair of parametric equations.
1.) x = 5t - 1, y = 4t + 6
2.) x = 2sintcost, y = 3sin2t

3.) x = tant, y = -tan2t + 3
Examples Write a pair of parametric equations that will produce
the indicated graph. Answers may vary.
1.) The line segment starting at (-2,4) with t = 3 and ending at
(5,-9) with t = 7.
Apr 288:19 PM
2.) The portion of the graph x2 + y2 = 9 that lies below the x-axis.
3.) The horizontal line through (5,2).
4.) The four-leaf rose whose polar equation is r = 5sin2θ.
