GRANDPARENTS SUNDAY - Historic Trinity Lutheran Church

GRANDPARENTS SUNDAY - Today
The impetus for a National Grandparents Day originated
with Marian McQuade, of West Virginia. Her primary
motivation was to champion the cause of lonely
elderly in nursing homes. She also hoped to persuade
grandchildren to tap the wisdom and heritage their
grandparents could provide. President Jimmy Carter, in
1978, proclaimed that National Grandparents Day would be celebrated
every year on the first Sunday after Labor Day. For 2014, Grandparents
Day falls on Sept. 7th .
HISTORIC TRINITY GUILD - Sept. 9
The next meeting of The Ladies Guild will be held on
Tuesday, September 9, at 5:30 p.m. We will begin with
a potluck supper before the scheduled meeting and a
sign-up sheet will be available on the Guild counter in
the Marowske room to indicate what you would like
to bring for the meal. Pastor Hill, from Family of God
congregation in Detroit, will be our speaker for the evening. He and his
congregation provide several meals per week to help the needy and the
homeless. In order to help Pastor Hill and Family of God in their mission,
The Guild is asking all those attending this meeting to bring a “foodless”
pantry item as a donation. They are in need of paper towels, napkins, toilet
paper, bar soap, dishwashing soap, laundry soap, toothpaste, and Pampers
diapers of assorted sizes. None of these items are covered by a Bridge
Card. All women of Historic Trinity are welcome and encouraged to join
The Guild at any time and we look forward to new members. Spouses
and significant others are invited to join us on September 9 for the potluck
dinner and the meeting to hear Pastor Hill’s presentation.
HISTORIC TRINITY LADIES AID - Sept 11

fellowship and Bible study led by Pastor Guettler. Always time for a “New
Beginning” so consider joining this wonderful group of Christian women!!

recycled jewelry at the Harvest Dinner this Fall. Please

Would you like to have more information about the
basic teachings of Christianity? Would you like to
understand better the meaning of “church” as it is
used both positively and negatively in today’s culture?
These things and similar questions pertaining to our
relation to God and one another are part of the discussions faced in our
Adult Information Class led by Pastor James Gruetzner for members
and nonmembers alike. Of course, it is from our Lutheran and Biblical
perspective that we will share. There is no obligation but certainly an
invitation to fellowship with us regularly. Fall classes are held in the
conference room next to the office during the 11:00a.m. Sunday worship
services. Dates for the classes are: September 7, 14 & 21st; October 12 &

THANKS FOR ATTENDING CHURCH HERE TODAY
THE LUTHERAN CHURCH
The Lutheran Church is the largest Protestant Church in
the world, with nearly 80 million members living in every
corner of the world. The Lutheran Church is the third largest
denomination in the United States with over eight million
members. Historic Trinity Lutheran Church is a member
of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod that has nearly three million
baptized members in some 6,000 congregations located in fifty states.
Together, we send missionaries to thirty countries.
ADDRESSES & EMAILS
The church office would greatly appreciate it if you would
inform them of any update or change in address; home,
cell, or work phone number; or email address. We do
respect your privacy, and we do not pass on your address.
Our ability to contact you, however, is only as good as
the latest information we have on file. We are especially
in need your current email address. Thanks!
WHY A CATHEDRAL MINISTRY?
In the major cities of America each denomination has
a strategically located downtown central church that
could become a Cathedral Church Ministry. These
churches are often unique in architecture and facilities,
and are open to new ministry. They become more than
“museums” or “private clubs” by their willingness to
serve other individuals and churches beyond their own
parish membership. Their outreach is metropolitan and they welcome
others to use their facilities. Over the past decades many city churches
have merged, moved to the suburbs, or sold their property. A Cathedral
Ministry can assure that there will be a presence of the Church in our cities
in the future.
ENDOWMENT FUNDS
The Historic Trinity Endowment Funds provide you with an
opportunity to help secure the future of Historic Trinity. One
of the major costs related to operating a downtown church is
the maintenance of its facilities, meeting the ever growing
costs of its utilities and insurance premiums, and salaries.
For over 160 years, since 1850, Historic Trinity has been
a beacon of religious stability for families, friends and individuals of
Metropolitan Detroit. Your Endowment Fund gift will assure that this fine
historical cathedral will be serving future generations well into the 21st
century. See the enclosed pamphlet on Endowments, in today’s Sunday
Bulletin.
HOW A CATHEDRAL MINISTRY WORKS
The Cathedral Church offers support, encouragement, hope and
creativity for other parishes, denominational officials, church
auxiliary groups, and civic and community organizations
through a team of clergy, staff, other professionals, and
volunteers. Each may individually or collectively participate
in the Cathedral Ministry according to their needs. The
Cathedral Church becomes the central resource for support ministry.
PASTORAL CROSS - USA (Sterling Silver)
The Pastors` Cross, being worn by Dr. Eberhard is a hand made
Sterling Silver Cross with Cubic Zirconia stones and the 36 inch
Sterling Silver Franco Chain.
INVITE OTHERS
Historic Trinity offers a large variety of opportunities
for involvement by you, your family, your co-workers,
and your friends through its many Worship Services,
Bible Classes, events, and activities. There are numerous
information and reservation flyers and mailers available
to make it easier for you to invite others to join with you
at a specific worship service or event. Pick up a flyer or mailer and pass
it on to someone. Remember - 85% of people attend a church because
someone asked them. Research by polling says that one in every four
people is just waiting to be invited to church. Other research demonstrates
that people need to be with people, and fellowship in a congregation helps
to meet that need. Individuals are looking for a church where they can
enjoy attending church - Historic Trinity is such a church. Give it a try ask someone to share in the joy and pride of Historic Trinity.
PARISH NURSE - 2nd and 4th Sundays
The Historic Trinity Parish Nurse Council provides important
services to our members by the caring and professional nurse
volunteers from the Historic Trinity congregation, who
willingly use their God-given talents on our behalf. These
dedicated nurses assist us in being more aware of our healthphysically, emotionally and spiritually. The nurses hold
various health issue seminars and a Mini Health Fair at the
church throughout the year. One of the parish nurses is available on the 2nd
and 4th Sundays of each month from 9:00a.m. until 11:00a.m. in the Pastor’s
Study to measure blood pressure and to help answer your health questions.
We invite all nurses of the congregation to join the Historic Trinity Parish
Nurse Council. See Parish Nurse Nancy Jones for information.
“CONTINUING THE LEGACY” - CAMPAIGN
Historic Trinity Lutheran Church, has engaged for
three years, in a “Continuing The Legacy” Campaign
celebrating the heritage and legacy of Historic Trinity
passed on to it by its many members and friends. It
is now our responsibility to pass on this legacy to
this generation and to generations yet to come. This legacy is found in
Historic Trinity’s architecturally significant church building, its powerful
proclamation of the Gospel, in its unique ministry on all levels, and in
the magnificent people of the parish. We appreciate all of you who have
made it possible for us to reach our goals. The campaign will still provide
you with opportunities to make donations. There will also be some items
that will provide matching dollars for each dollar you donate for a specific
item, you donate $100.00 and it will be matched with $100.00. There will
be new possibilities for contributing to the Legacy Campaign by deferred
gifts , designated insurance policies or IRA designated funds. There will
be a Historic Trinity Legacy Builders Dinner for all legacy donors next
spring.
Historic Trinity CATHEDRAL
is an ecclesiastical, cultural, community
RESOURCE and GATHERING PLACE
for all of Metro Detroit.

Calling all Prayer Shawl Ministry Knitters and
Crocheters and those who would like to help with
packaging the shawls and recording them in our
scrapbook! We are down to only a few Prayer Shawls
to give recipients! If you have some time, we would
love to have you help us replenish our supply. This
is a special act of love and a creative method of prayer. You do not have
to be an expert knitter or crocheter, we appreciate whatever you would
like to do! The finished shawls become a physical expression of our
prayers, a reminder of our love and God’s Blessings! Please let the Church
office--313-567-3100 or 800-268-3058--or Barbara Asmus know if you or
someone you know would appreciate one of these gifts of hope, comfort,
peace and of love, or if you would like to deliver a shawl. Please call us if
you would like to help and join our Prayer Shawl Ministry.
IS HISTORIC TRINITY IN YOUR WILL ?
One way you can continue your legacy with Historic Trinity
and help the ministries continue for years to come, is by
including Historic Trinity in your will or your estate.
LCC - “LUTHERAN CHURCH IN THE CITY”
The presence of the Lutheran Church in Detroit, like the
city, has been shrinking for the last 50 years. We cannot
continue to do what we have done in the past, but must
change, and do so now. Within this context, many persons
are beginning to move back into the city. We are using
existing church, community, civic, and business resources,
to engage these persons in enriching their spirituality. Be it by inspiring
worship opportunities at the Historic Trinity Cathedral, by various bible
study groups and spiritual discussion groups throughout the central city,
or by providing meaningful engaging service projects, we continue to
seek partnerships with suburban parishes and people to bridge the divide
between urban and suburban churches and members. We also have a Web
site - citychurchlcc.org - that serves as a networking for all Lutheran
ministries and as a way to identify service opportunities in the Metro
Detroit area.
JOIN HISTORIC TRINITY
You are invited to become a member today of Historic
Trinity Lutheran Church, the church where the action is in
downtown Detroit. Join this, the fastest growing church
in downtown Detroit, with more than 2000+ members at a
median age of 41. With a membership that is 50% female
and 50% male, Historic Trinity is THE church to belong to!
An Authentic Church for our times, the vibrancy of Historic
Trinity makes a stark contrast to the many moribund parishes in our
society today. It offers a good, meaningful, quality spiritual experience for
all. At the heart of our activities is a worshiping congregation affirming the
inclusive love of God, which is made known through Jesus Christ. That
love makes a difference in our lives and challenges us to make a difference
in the world. Studies show that persons attending church find strength
to deal with setbacks in life, and they also find they are less stressed by
everyday worries when they attend church regularly. Why attend, or stay
away, from a church that makes you uncomfortable or upset? Each week,
more and more individuals are deciding to make Historic Trinity their
church home. Become one of these people and make your choice today!
Membership applications are available in the Sunday Bulletin, on the Web
page, or by request. You may join the church by baptism, confirmation,
profession of faith, transfer of membership from another congregation, or
dual membership. Don’t wait any longer - take the big step and sign up
today. You will be proud you joined this church which is an innovative
leader in today’s ministries.

HISTORIC TRINITY
Historic Trinity Lutheran Church Cathedral in downtown
Detroit is one of a kind. The uniqueness of its downtown
location, facilities, programs, and worship services
distinguishes it from all other parishes. Since 1850,
Historic Trinity has maintained a vigil over downtown
Detroit through good times and bad, in periods of brilliance
and obscurity, as a living vibrant church held in great
esteem by its membership and others who have come to worship within
its architecturally excellent facilities. We have been through all kinds of
changes in the church in the past decades, but now we are regaining a
resurgence of traditional civility in today’s church environment. Each
person who steps inside derives his or her own satisfaction from Historic
Trinity: whether their purpose is to communicate with the past, give thanks
for the present, or to find reasonable hope for the future. Welcome to
Historic Trinity, the Mother Church of Detroit Lutheranism, a downtown
church that contributes to the cultural and religious environment of
metropolitan Detroit. Historic Trinity is a National, Michigan State, and
City of Detroit designated historical site.
Giving Options - CREDIT CARD
A special feature at Historic Trinity, is that you have the
option - for church contributions, memorials, tickets to
events, or financial gifts large and small - to donate by
cash, check, bank draft, bank passport or credit card.
Historic Trinity provides you with these optional ways
to make it easier for you to make a contribution, to make reservations, or
to support the many excellent activities of this dynamic ministry. One
of these options is that you are invited to use your credit card. You may
select a specific amount for your contribution each month, be it $10.00,
$20.00, $100.00, or whatever you desire. This provides you with a simple
way to contribute, even to make bonus points, and have an immediate
receipt. You may use MasterCard, Visa, Discover, or any Novus Card,
and American Express. To make a church contribution by credit card, all
you have to do is call Jerris Rosenthal at the church office 313-567-3100
or 800-268-3058. Be sure to include the 3 digit number on the back of
your credit card. Let her know how much you wish to donate each week
or month to the church, using your credit card. When you want to stop
contributing by credit card just let her know. You may also make credit
card donations using our secure web site (www.historictrinity.org). It’s
really easy, and more and more members and friends of Historic Trinity,
are using this credit card option. Use your credit card to make reservations
for the various activities at Historic Trinity, or use your credit card to make
a donation to the church, or use it with the white envelopes placed in each
pew in the church.
CHURCHES & CATHEDRALS
The Dau Church History Library of Historic Trinity is proud
to present an excellent collection of books and pamphlets on
the world’s great churches and cathedrals. There are over
550 booklets that include 340 different churches from over 36
countries around the world. This splendid library of books and
booklets is housed in the pastor’s study. Nancy Auffenberg is
restructuring this collection of books and booklets about the
great churches of the world. Thank you to those members who
have already donated booklets. While on a trip, stop by churches
and pick up literature for this library. Do you have a book or pamphlet
to donate? Stop by the Pastors Study and review this fine collection of
booklets on the world’s great churches.
RESERVATIONS
Have you made your reservation? Over the next weeks, there
are a lot of activities and events at Historic Trinity that call
for reservations. Reservations are important! Reservations
help us to determine if there are enough persons interested in
attending, and it also gives us some idea of how much food
and materials to prepare. Turn or mail in your reservation to
the church office, (313-567-3100 or 800-268-3058) or use
the FORM on our Web Page www.historictrinity.org for reservations. You
may also use your credit card for payment. Please look over the choices
and make your reservation now, and you can pay just before the event.
Don’t be shut out - act now !
ACTION TEAM
Historic Trinity and the Lutheran Church in the City
have developed a new process by which you can reach
out in service to the community. People loved by God
reaching out in love to others. Under the leadership of
Richard Carolan the Action Team selects various areas in
which you can help. It may be feeding the poor, it may be painting homes,
it may be reaching out in love to the elderly, it may be opportunities for
you to share God’s Word with others, and many other suggestions. Most
Action Team events are only for one day. Pick out an Action Team project
from the Action Team listing, and follow instructions, for the what-wherewhen. See you there – Let’s Go – Take Action NOW.
800-268-3058 (Mich. only)
Historic Trinity Lutheran Church has an 800 phone number:
800-268-3058 for your convenience. This 800 number only
works in the State of Michigan.
THE HOMELESS
Members and friends of the parish continue to generously
contribute unused samples of soaps, shampoos, tube socks,
hair conditioners, hand lotions, toothpaste, deodorants,
aspirins, or any personal care products that they receive in
the mail, from dental visits, from cosmetic promotions, or
from hotels and motels, for homeless shelters in Detroit and
the Metropolitan areas. Please place your items in the box in the Parish
Hall hallway. See Karla Jaeger for information.
COUPON BOX
To assist you during these economic down days, it has
been decided to make available a “Coupon Box” at
Historic Trinity. The Coupon Box, located in the Luther
Lounge, is for you to place in coupons you wish to
donate and/ or sort thru and take coupons you can use. Please cut out
coupons before you place in the box. Take a peek! You might be surprised
at the opportunities or items you can save money on with a coupon. For
more information talk to Karla Jaeger.
FEEDING THE HOMELESS
Since 1967, the Fort Street Open Door has provided
care to over 400 men and women every week in
downtown Detroit. Though they began as a soupkitchen, and continue to serve over 20,000 meals
annually, Open Door does more than feed the hungry.
In addition to a warm meal, guests have access to clothing and outerwear,
showers, hygiene supplies and barber services, medical care, and an onsite social worker. They also run a weekly Career Closet that provides
business and interview attire to men and women who are about to re-enter
the workforce. For years, members of Historic Trinity have helped the
Open Door and you can too! They are always ready to welcome volunteers
on Thursdays from 8:30-11a.m. to help serve food, distribute clothing, and
greet guests. If you are unable to offer time, they accept new or gently used
clothing and outerwear, travel-size hygiene supplies, and washcloth and
towels. Because all services are offered at no charge, monetary support
is also needed. All donations are tax deductible and can be forwarded to
Fort Street Open Door (631 W Fort St Detroit, MI 48226) or sent through
Bill Vollmert, a Historic Trinity member, who volunteers weekly and can
be contacted at 313.394.2089. A representative of the Fort Street Open
Door can be reached at 313.961.4533 x34 or at [email protected]
CHURCH PARKING
Parking for church services and events is available in
the two parking lots adjacent to the church and, for
overflow on evenings and weekends, in the Brewery
Park lots. Please follow directions of the person in the
lot and be sure to obtain a “parking pass” if you park in the Brewery Park
parking lots. Do not leave your car parked in the parking lot after church
services or an event- the gates will be locked. If you are parked in the
Brewery Park section and plan to attend something at the church after the
11:00 a.m. Worship Service, please move your car to the Historic Trinity
lot first.
EYE GLASSES FOR MISSIONS
Your continued donation of old, new, or unused
eyeglasses (also, just lenses) to assist MOST mission
teams, around the world, is very much appreciated.
There is a box located in the Parish Hall hallway for you to place your
donated glasses. Great job, members and friends. Thanks!
LUTHERAN HOUR
The Lutheran Hour, the radio program of the Lutheran Church
- Missouri Synod can be heard each Sunday at: Detroit - 6:30
a.m. and 12:00 noon on WRDT (560), and 6:30 am on WDFN
(1130), Ann Arbor on WAAM at 7:00 a.m.
CAR PARKING - ID
Historic Trinity has an “ID” sticker for your car windshield.
Place the sticker in the lower left hand corner (driver’s
side) of the window. Those automobiles that display an
HT windshield sticker will not need a parking pass to the
lots adjacent to the church. You will still need to enter
the lots from the gate in the church’s parking lot. If you do not have a HT
sticker, you will need a parking pass from the security person. Stickers can
be obtained from the security person in the parking lot or from the church
office. See Greg Rode for assistance.
HISTORIC TRINITY COOK BOOK

for sale at the Guild counter. The cost of the entire cookbook

their various ministry projects.

COMPLETE THE ORGAN RESTORATION
The Organ of Historic Trinity, designed and built by the
Ernest Skinner Company, is a rare gem in a magnificent
setting. Ernest Skinner was regarded as the premier organ
builder of his day and, indeed, the most prominent American
builder of his time. Skinner’s organs were characterized by
excellent craftsmanship, great warmth of tone and a lush
romantic sound. Historic Trinity’s organ is Skinner’s opus
808 of 3-manuals, 27-voices, 31 ranks, 5 divisions, with added chimes.
The main organ is housed in the front bell tower, with the Echo Division
in the smaller Luther Tower to the west of the chancel. It is a mediumsized organ, appropriately scaled to the size of the room. The instrument
is very rare because so few Skinner organs have survived in their original
state. This instrument is one of the most admired of all pipe organs - an
original, unaltered E. M. Skinner organ. Few of these remain anywhere
in this country, and an organ of this size and era are extremely rare. We
started in the early 1980’s restoring this fine instrument. It has been done
in stages, all pipes were removed, cleaned, and repaired. The counsel
itself was taken apart, cleaned and repaired. Now it’s time to complete
this process with the releathering of the choir division keys. The cost is
approximately $19,500. We have an individual, The Leonard & Laura
Schweitzer Foundation, who will match your gift dollar for dollar up to
$9,000.00. You donate $10 and it is matched with $10. See the “wish
list” in today’s Sunday Bulletin to make your gift to complete the Historic
Trinity Organ to its original state.
