The Thirty-Seventh Annual Commencement October 10, 2009 2 p.m. Soldiers and Sailors’ War Memorial Trenton, New Jersey Tradition of Excellence: A Thomas Edison State College Thomas Edison State College, one of America’s preeminent educational institutions, provides flexible, high-quality, collegiate learning opportunities for self-directed adults. Cited as “one of the brighter stars of higher learning” by The New York Times and one of the top 20 colleges and universities in the nation in the use of technology to create learning opportunities for adults by Forbes magazine, Thomas Edison State College enables adults to build on their past achievements as a bridge to their future success. The College offers the highest quality education to adults who have the inspiration, self-discipline and energy to complete a college degree despite the many conflicting demands of career, family and community. Founded in 1972, this world-renowned institution offers associate, bachelor’s and master’s degrees in more than 100 areas of study. Thomas Edison State College provides adults from every state in the United States and more than 70 countries throughout the world with a wide variety of ways to complete a quality degree. The College, its leadership and programs are a tribute to its illustrious history. The College’s Kelsey Building is recognized as one of the most important visual landmarks of the Trenton, N.J., State House Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Originally built by Henry Cooper Kelsey, a banker and politician with an appreciation for the arts, the Kelsey Building is a memorial to his wife, Prudence Townsend Kelsey, who died in 1904. The building was dedicated in 1911 as the School for Industrial Arts. In 1979, when Thomas Edison State College was looking to move from office space it had outgrown in the Forrestal Center outside of Princeton, N.J., the state was looking for an appropriate tenant for the landmark Kelsey Building, while the city sought to preserve the building’s historic use as a school. All three concerns were brought together when state Senate President Joseph P. Merlino persuaded Gov. Brendan T. Byrne that, along with five adjoining townhouses, the Kelsey Building was ideal for College expansion. Today, Thomas Edison State College’s presence has expanded throughout the capital city. The College’s campus comprises the Kelsey Building at 101 W. State St., and the five restored 19th-century townhouses adjacent to the Kelsey Building; the Academic Center at 167 W. Hanover St.; the Kuser Mansion (home of The John S. Watson Institute for Public Policy) at 315 W. State St.; and the newest addition, the Canal Banks Building at 221 W. Hanover St. In January 2005, Thomas Edison State College, along with the state of New Jersey and Nexus Properties, Incorporated, embarked on the development of a new 35,000-square-foot facility, The Canal Banks Building, to house Thomas Edison State College employees. The College took occupancy of the building in December 2005. The Canal Banks Building not only affords additional space to support Thomas Edison State College staff but also enhances the College’s presence in Trenton and supports the technology required to provide high-quality learning opportunities to adults at a distance. Located less than one block west of the College’s Academic Center on Hanover Street, the Canal Banks Building is situated alongside the historic Delaware and Raritan Canal. This new addition to the College’s campus provides easy access for College employees, students, alumni and the general public. Thomas Edison State College, however, is not contained by bricks and mortar. The College’s reach is felt by all those who strive to create a better future for themselves and for their communities. In the true spirit of inspiration and innovation, Thomas Edison State College will continue to reinvent the future of higher education. The Thirty-Seventh Commencement of William J. The college or university commencement procession today is a pageant, alive and bright with dress and ceremony derived from the tradition of the oldest universities. Academic life as we know it today began in the Middle Ages—in Bologna and Paris, Oxford and Cambridge, Edinburgh, Glasgow and Louvain—first in the church, then in the guilds. The teaching guild was the Guild of the Master of Arts, where the bachelor was the apprentice of the master, and the dress was color-coded and patterned according to the academic level and discipline. In the hierarchy of the academic world, the associate’s degree is the modern entry point. Its equivalent in the guild of teachers was that of a junior apprentice. Twelfth-century records of Oxford University state this justification for academic dress: “It is honorable and in accordance with reason that clerks to whom God has given an advantage of the lay folk in their adornments within, should likewise differ from the lay folk outwardly in dress.” There are three principal features of academic dress: the gown, the cap and the hood. Their design and heraldry were, from as early as the eleventh and twelfth centuries in the great European universities, the outward sign of the bringing together of students and privileged persons under the same discipline. To preserve their dignity and meaning, it early became necessary for these universities to set rules for academic dress. American universities agreed on a system in 1895 and set up a suitable code of academic dress for the colleges and universities of the United States. In 1932, and again in 1959, the American Council on Education revised the code that, for the most part, governs the style of academic dress today. THE GOWN. The flowing gown comes from the twelfth century. Many think it was worn in olden times as protection against the cold of unheated buildings. It has become symbolic of the democracy of scholarship, for it completely covers any dress of rank or social standing. The associate’s degree gown is grey. The gown is black for all degrees above the associate’s, with pointed sleeves for the bachelor’s degree; oblong sleeves for the master’s degree; and bell-shaped sleeves for the doctor’s degree. For the bachelor’s and master’s degree, the gown has no trimmings. For the doctor’s degree, it is faced down the front with velvet and has three bars of velvet across the sleeves in the color distinctive of the faculty or discipline to which the degree pertains. More recently, the official colors of Thomas Edison State College, burgundy and cream, have been used in the gown and its decorations. 37 The Symbols of Learning, continued THE CAP. When Roman law freed a slave, he won the privilege of wearing a cap. Thus, the academic cap is a sign of freedom of scholarship and the responsibility and dignity with which scholarship endows the wearer. Old poetry records the cap of scholarship as square to symbolize the book, although some authorities claim that the mortar board is the symbol of the masons, a privileged guild. The color of the tassel on the cap denotes the discipline. The associate’s cap is grey. Caps for master’s and doctor’s degrees are often black, but may appear in other colors, as well, depending on the rest of the regalia. THE HOOD. Almost all of the students and faculty in the medieval universities were clerics (minor church ecclesiastics) and were tonsured (i.e., had shaved heads), and the hood served to cover the shaved head from the cold of unheated buildings. Eventually, the hood was superseded by the skull cap and evolved into a headdress more or less like those in use today. Heraldically, the hood is an inverted shield with one or more chevrons of a secondary color on the ground of the primary color of the college. The color of the facing of the hood denotes the discipline represented by the degree; the color of the lining of the hood designates the college or university from which the degree was granted. THE MACE. The mace—a heavy staff or club fashioned entirely of metal with a metal head—was originally a weapon of war. In the sixteenth century, it became a ceremonial standard and a scepter of office. It resembled the original weapon and was carried before officials at ceremonial occasions. A mace is still in use in the British House of Commons, where it lies upon the table before the speaker as a symbol of the authority of the House. The mace of Thomas Edison State College was designed by the College and was inaugurated as the scepter of office at the October 1990 Commencement ceremony. It is a solid maple scepter with a two-sided medallion mounted to the head by a brass collar. There are three brass bands on the shaft, upon which the names of the College’s three presidents and their terms are inscribed as follows: James Douglas Brown Jr., 1972-1978; Larraine Rose Matusak, 1979-1982; and George A. Pruitt, 1982-present. The mace shaft and base are finished in mahogany. Carried in the procession by the president of the Academic Council, the mace symbolizes the authority of the Office of the President. 38 Thomas Edison State College Board of Trustees J. State To Soldiers and Sailors’ War Memorial The Soldiers and Sailors’ War Memorial on the Delaware River in downtown Trenton, N.J., has served the state capital and central New Jersey for more than 75 years. An architectural treasure listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the memorial has served as a backdrop for some of New Jersey’s top tier of society, business and entertainment. The Soldiers and Sailors’ War Memorial was planned by men who believed they were commemorating the war to end all wars – the war that had made the world safe for democracy. Designed by architect William A. Klemann, the building was completed March 1, 1932. The formal opening and dedication, however, took place Jan. 19, 1932, at the second inaugural of Gov. A. Harry Moore. Conceived as “a great community center,” the Soldiers and Sailors’ War Memorial lived up to its planners’ intentions from the start. The facility has been the site for the inauguration of every New Jersey governor since 1932. Three presidents of the United States have given speeches at the Soldiers and Sailors’ War Memorial: Harry S Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy. As an emissary of her husband, Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt also made a speech in the theater. The roster of world-class artists and entertainers who have performed in the Soldiers and Sailors’ War Memorial includes Louis Armstrong, Leonard Bernstein, Johnny Cash, Bill Cosby, Duke Ellington, Bob Hope, Vladimir Horowitz, B.B. King, the Kirov Ballet, Peter, Paul & Mary, Frank Sinatra and Bruce Springsteen. On Jan. 12, 1988, both houses of the legislature, while gathered at the Soldiers and Sailors’ War Memorial for Gov. Thomas H. Kean’s State of the State address, heard a preface they hadn’t expected. As he looked out over the faded auditorium, the governor proposed that New Jersey restore it. Backed by the city and county, legislation was signed by the governor in August of that year, transferring ownership to the state, with the promise that the landmark building would be brought back to its former glory. Nearly five years of meticulous restoration and renovation brought the Soldiers and Sailors’ War Memorial into the 21st century, while preserving and renewing the theater’s Italian Renaissancestyle elegance and grandeur. Reopened to the public in January 1999, following the $35 million restoration-renovation, the Soldiers and Sailors’ War Memorial has recaptured its place as central New Jersey’s finest performing arts and banquetconference center. www.tesc.edu
