Layered Unit
Layered curriculum allows you more choice in your assignments. Each layer requires a different level of thinking going
from basic knowledge to application to critical thinking.
• Layer C is the most basic knowledge for the unit. In order to earn a “C” grade (75%) you must complete the
amount of points required for that layer.
• Layer B requires you to apply the knowledge you gained from completing Layer C. In order to earn a “B” grade
(85%) you must complete the amount of points required for Layers B and C.
• Layer A requires you to think critically about the unit and to make text-to-text, text-to-self, and/or text-to-world
connections. In order to earn an “A” grade you must complete the required points for Layers A, B, and C.
It is IMPORTANT that you DO NOT lose this log sheet! If you lose it you will be required to re-do any assignments
that have been initialed already.

Run the Country - Write 5 commandments for your ideal government. Write a short paragraph
(2-4 sentences) for each commandment explaining why it should be a part of an ideal
government.

Get Musical - Make a list of 10 songs that would make a good soundtrack for the book. Write a
sentence or two for each song explaining how it relates to the book. Make sure to include the title
and artist for each song. Also, don't forget to give your soundtrack a “creative” title.

Write It Down - Write a short essay explaining what communism is and how Animal Farm
either IS or IS NOT an example of a communist society. (100-150 words – does not have to be
typed)

Role Play - With a partner, conduct a “pretend” interview with a character from Animal Farm.
Work together to write 7 or more questions and answers, then perform your interview (as a
reporter and the character being interviewed) for the teacher.

Dear Diary – Choose one character from the book and write a journal entry from that character's
point of view for each chapter. Each entry should focus on something that happened during the
chapter and should include the character's feelings and not just tell what occurred.

Animal I.Q. - Rank each type of animal on the farm based on intelligence going from most
intelligent to least intelligent. Include the following animals: horse, cow, pig, sheep, dog, cat,
goat, donkey, duck, and hen. Explain each of your rankings in a sentence. (Refer to chapter 3 for
clues.)

Your project should address one essential question and should show the connection between the novel and the
essential question. If you decide to come up with your own essential question or to do a different project, you
must get approval from the teacher before you begin.

Write a 200-500 word essay addressing the Essential Question of your choice. Make sure your
essay has an introduction, 2 or more body paragraphs and a conclusion. (Does not have to be
typed.)
