Multinational Academic Program Description

Multinational
Academic
Program
Thank you for your interest in Brookhaven College’s Multinational Academic Program
(MAP) for Study Abroad through individualized distance learning.
The Multinational Academic Program for Study Abroad is designed to provide academic
credits for systematic language study abroad. With MAP for Study Abroad, students are
able to participate in intensive language study at any time of the year! The Immersion
Language Experiences available through this program are an affordable way for students
to experience valuable language and cultural immersion programs. They provide a sound
basis for more advanced study of the language.
Program participants are assigned to individual classes based on their academic
background in the target language and level of ability. All courses practice communication
skills and emphasize oral proficiency.
Along with a minimum of 20 hours of instruction per week, most programs offer excursions
including city and museum tours, trips to neighboring towns, group dinners and travel to
cultural and historical sites in the region. Other extracurricular activities available often
include dance lessons, cooking classes, or other programs that highlight specific cultural
aspects that will help students experience the culture surrounding the language of choice.
At most locations students live with a local host family in order to interact with native
speakers and to learn the culture first hand!
Participants in the MAP for Study Abroad have the opportunity to earn undergraduate
language credit from Brookhaven College in Dallas, Texas. This institution is accredited by
the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC),
which is the same body that accredits the University of Texas, Rice University,
Southern Methodist University and other prestigious colleges and universities in our
region.
There are a number of credit-bearing language courses available that are designed for
undergraduate university transfer. All courses taken through Brookhaven College are
designated as freshman- and sophomore-level courses, though students may take as many
as they want.

MAP for Study Abroad students may schedule their study for any time of the year that the
approved Partner Language Institute of their choice offers the language instruction. The
number of credits a student seeks will determine the number of weeks they MUST study to
meet the requirements for credit. The hour and week requirements are fixed and cannot
be changed; additional hours of instruction on any given day do not enable students to
shorten the total time period required by Brookhaven College for academic credit.

Students who attend a MAP for Study Abroad Partner Language Institute that has more
than one location may divide their stay among those locations.
**For a comprehensive list of current MAP Partner Language Institutes, see the
addendum at the end of this document.

Students interested in receiving academic credit for participation in our Multinational
Academic Program for Study Abroad must complete the following steps. More detailed
information
1. Contact your home college or university (where you currently attend or where you
plan to attend in the future) and find out if they accept transfer credit from
Brookhaven College in Dallas, Texas.
a. Once you have found the appropriate department, make sure they will
transfer credits for the course or courses you plan to pursue through our
Multinational Academic Program for Study Abroad. We strongly
recommended that you ask for a pre-approval, preferably in writing and with
the proper administrator's signature. For Brookhaven College transfer
information see:

ansfer.aspx
Or go to: http://www.brookhavencollege.edu/ and use the A-Z Index to

2. Register for a language immersion program with a MAP Partner Language
Institute or one of the Recruiting Organizations that represent them. You will
need to make arrangements to pay either the Partner Language Institute or
Recruiter directly for your immersion language program with them.
a. Make sure that you reserve a program that meets the minimum number of
hours required for the number of credits you want to receive and that the

Online Application to Brookhaven College
4. All applicants eligible for the online application, take note of the instructions here.
Multinational Academic Program Description, Brookhaven College
6
a.
When applying online, you may begin the process at
www1.dcccd.edu/stuapp. At that page, begin the online application
process under the heading “Account Information.”
b.
Click on the “Create your account” link and follow the instructions to fill in
all the required fields.
c.
Once you have done this, click the “Create Account and Continue” button,
which will bring you to the online DCCCD Admissions Application Form.
Follow the instructions there to fill out the application completely—this is a
credit-bearing program, so you are applying for Credit Admission and NOT
Continuing Education.
d.
It is essential that you include a telephone number and email address where
you can be reached. Under “REASON FOR ATTENDING,” be sure to indicate
that you are taking courses “To Transfer to a University (APPN.U/T).”
Where necessary, indicate that the college you plan to attend is Brookhaven
College.
e.
In the “Texas Success Initiative (TSI)” section, please check any boxes that
are appropriate to your situation. Texas residents may be familiar with
these tests, while others may not be. In any case, don’t be afraid to check “I
have not taken one of the tests listed above. I understand that I may
have to take a test prior to registration.” As long as you are enrolled only
for MAP for Study Abroad courses, you will NOT have a testing requirement
at Brookhaven College. However, you will receive assessment testing at
the Partner Language Institute upon your arrival so that you are placed
into a language class at the appropriate instructional level.
After completing and submitting the Application for Admission, arrange for official
transcripts to be sent from each of your previous and current institutions of higher
education. Official transcripts for ALL colleges or universities you have attended must be
sent directly to the Admissions Office (even if some previous coursework appears on your
home university transcript).
If you are currently enrolled in classes at your home college or university, you should
request that the transcript be sent once the current semester's grades have been posted at
the end of the term. You should ensure that official transcripts are sent to Brookhaven
College as soon as possible since failure to do so will likely delay the processing of your
credits.
Please have official transcripts sent directly from the institution(s) you are currently
attending as well as ALL colleges and universities you have ever attended to:

Enrolling in the Brookhaven College Multinational Academic Program MAP for Study
Abroad
5. In an accompanying document, you will find a Brookhaven College Multinational
Academic Program Registration Form, which will be used to evaluate your request for
credit for the specific course or courses that you seek. Fill it out completely and return it
by fax, email or postal mail to Brookhaven College – the return information is on the form.
The form must be completely filled out, dated and signed before you send it. We cannot
accept the form unless you have recorded your Brookhaven College student ID number on
it (except in the case of 3** above). The form MUST also include the name and location of
the Partner Language Institute you will be attending along with exact start and end
dates. Once we have received your registration form, we will email you a bill with
payment options.
The entire MAP fee is due at that time. Failure to pay the MAP fee means that the applicant is
NOT a MAP for Study Abroad student and is NOT a Brookhaven College student.
Participation in the Brookhaven College Multinational Academic Program for Study
Abroad
8. Attend and successfully complete the language immersion program at the Partner
Language Institute. You must be in class and participate for the minimum number of
agreed-upon hours. You must satisfactorily complete all class work and homework, and
you must pass all tests – see below.
a. Submit your final essay or project – see below.
b. After your school report and final essay or project have been received, a
Brookhaven College instructor of record will assess your performance and assign a
letter grade as described below. Once the grades are posted, we will contact you with
information on how you can request that official college transcripts be sent to you, your
home university or college or whomever you designate. (see Transcripts below)
Multinational Academic Program Description, Brookhaven College
8
MAP for Study Abroad students are registered at Brookhaven College and will receive an
official college transcript upon completion of the language study abroad and after the
evaluation criteria have been satisfactorily met. A letter grade will be assigned by the
Brookhaven College instructor of record after they have assessed the language study
abroad outcomes based on the evaluations and scores reported by the MAP Partner
Language Institute school report, combined with a final essay or project that has been
completed and submitted by the student.
MAP for Study Abroad students are placed at the appropriate level of study based on
previous academic language experience and may receive between three and 17 semester
hours of language study abroad credits.
Occasionally a student will request more than 17 hours. While this is possible, additional
courses are still limited to freshman- or sophomore-levels. In other words, earning 30
hours of language credits through MAP for Study Abroad will not translate into junior- or
senior-level credits.
We strongly recommend that you communicate your study abroad objectives with an
advisor at your current or future institution as each district, college or university has its
own policies regarding the number and types of credit they will accept. While credits are
commonly transferred among accredited institutions, we advise that you seek approval
from your home institution department chair, transfer advisor or registrar to make certain
the particular credits you earn will be accepted. Getting advance approval in writing will go
a long way toward ensuring that your credits from Brookhaven College will transfer and be
applied to meet degree or graduation requirements at your home institution. Below is a
list of the different courses we offer including their names, course numbers, contact hours
and amount of credit.
Courses Available for Academic Credit Through the Multinational Academic Program
for Study Abroad
(https://www1.dcccd.edu/catalog/cattoc.cfm?loc=DCCCD)
Note that the following list is comprehensive and includes all of the courses we are
able to transcript. Because Brookhaven College is a community college, we do not
award academic credit at the junior, senior or graduate levels. Regardless of how
advanced a student’s language program may be, the student will only be able to earn
credit for the freshman- and sophomore-level courses listed below.

Courses that are traditionally selected for university transfer:
First Year (Freshman Level) Language Course
(a) = First Semester (b) = Second Semester
Second Year (Sophomore Level) Language Course
(c) = First Semester
(d) = Second Semester
Because degree requirements and course equivalencies vary among universities,
students are strongly encouraged to seek advice at their home institutions in order
to select courses at Brookhaven College that will transfer most readily.
Courses which are numbered 1311 and 1411 are identical, except that the first is a
three-credit-hour version and the second is a four-credit-hour version. The same applies to
those numbered 1312 and 1412. This means that the course content is the same for
both the first and second course in each pair; the difference lies in the number of lab hours
(and consequently overall hours) necessary to satisfy course time requirements. Because
degree requirements and course equivalencies vary among universities, students
are strongly encouraged to seek advice at their home institutions in order to select
courses at Brookhaven College that will transfer most readily.
**For each course, there is a minimum number of classroom contact hours that MUST be
completed. Because there are time-on-task requirements for these courses, students must
Multinational Academic Program Description, Brookhaven College
12
complete at least the minimum number of contact hours for each course for which they
seek academic credit. This is generally calculated at 20 hours per complete week of
instruction, which is the minimum number of classroom hours students in this program
may enroll for at Partner Language Institutes. Students seeking credit in multiple
courses must attend the number of weeks that will reflect the cumulative minimum.
Contact hours are based on an instructional hour, whether lecture or laboratory, that is
composed of 50 literal minutes of learning activity and 10 literal minutes of break time.
Consequently, for the purposes described here, 48 contact hours equates to 2,400 literal
minutes of instruction, interaction, activity, or other “time-on-task.”
The Relationship Between MAP for Study Abroad Credits, Program Fees and Weeks
Abroad
**Fees are dependent upon the number of courses (NOT credits) for which a student
strives to earn credit. In contrast, the maximum number of credits a student may obtain is
determined in part by the number of weeks the student spends in immersion language
learning at the Partner Language Institute.
The correlation between the number of total credits a student is attempting to earn, the
minimum number of weeks of study required, and the 2014-2015 program costs is
displayed in the following table.

**The MAP for Study Abroad fee assessed by Brookhaven College is entirely separate from
and NOT included in any fees or payments students make to language schools or their
representatives. Students should carefully weigh the entire cost of the study abroad
experience before making any non-refundable deposits to language institutes or their
representatives.
In order to receive credit from Brookhaven College, students must complete the college’s
application, registration, and payment BEFORE they attend the Partner Institute. Please
Note: Work submitted after this date will not be accepted.
A Message for Parents, Significant Others, and Friends
We are happy to provide information about our programs and educational opportunities to
all who inquire. Sometimes parents, significant others, or friends want to share this
information with potential students in order to help in making decisions about the study
abroad program. We encourage support groups to be involved in helping to arrange a total
program that will meet the needs of our students. However, because the Multinational
Academic Program is a college-level program designed for university transfer of academic
credits, it is imperative that ONLY the participating students themselves correspond and
interact with us on their own behalves. Since most of our communication for this program
is done by email, it is essential that the email address on file in our student record system—
Multinational Academic Program Description, Brookhaven College
14
the one given on application for admission—be the email address of the student, and NOT
of any other person.
If the student is a minor, we will correspond directly with the student and copy a parent or
guardian in each case. However, if the student is 18 years of age or older, we consider that
student an adult with the all the responsibilities and rights of privacy of an adult. We
always encourage students to take the program information we exchange and share it
others.
Once again, all students participating in this program must apply for admission themselves,
complete and sign MAP Registration Forms themselves, complete and submit Final
Projects or Final Essays, make inquiries to Brookhaven College MAP staff, and answer
emails from the college themselves.
Concerning Multinational Academic Program for Study Abroad Course Syllabi and
Texts
We regret that we are unable to provide syllabi, text lists, or detailed course descriptions
for Multinational Academic Program for Study Abroad courses. The syllabi and texts for
on-campus language courses are not the same as those used in Study Abroad programs.
This is because, week by week and day by day, the MAP for Study Abroad course content
may vary significantly, depending on a variety of factors: whether the course is intensive or
super intensive; whether instruction is individual and one-on-one or, instead, with a
smaller group or a larger group; whether the Partner Language Institute (language
school) is located in Central America, in South America, or in Europe. What we can provide
are the Brookhaven College Catalog descriptions of the language courses that we transcribe
through the MAP for Study Abroad.
Each language institute has its own approach to language teaching, with instructional
methods, course content, and teaching materials that are suited to the cultural
environment and facilities available at the institute and that can be individualized to the
needs, abilities, and interests of particular students. Consequently, for actual syllabi of
what is covered during the program period at your study destination or for a description of
current texts or teaching materials, please contact the Academic Director of the Partner
Language Institute where you will be undertaking your immersion language experience.
Earning and Receiving Language Course Grades and Credits
MAP for Study Abroad courses feature the beginning and intermediate study of language
and culture, with emphasis on communicative skills. Credit will be granted for systematic
study of the Target Language and culture at a recognized teaching Partner Language
Institute, in a country where that language is spoken predominately, approved in
advanced by Brookhaven College. The Brookhaven College Multinational Academic
Program Instructor of Record will examine and grade the progress and achievement of the
students in this program before assigning credit. The amount of credit is based upon the
Multinational Academic Program Description, Brookhaven College
15
number of contact hours, lectures, laboratory hours, reading assignments, and required
papers.
Grades are assigned based upon performance as measured by a combination of
1) feedback from the Partner Language Institute instructors as stated by the
Academic Director on the school report, and
2) a final essay or project created in the target language.
Since this is an intensive language program, for students who seek credit for multiple
courses, the grade assigned for performance in the program will be the grade assigned for
each of the courses taken as part of the program.
A qualified Multinational Academic Program Instructor of Record at Brookhaven
College will be assigned to evaluate the progress of each language learner, verify that the
amount of study and content correspond to the number of credit hours and the level of
coursework originally designated, and assign a grade of A, B, C, D, or F for each course for
which the student has sought credit at Brookhaven College.
The Instructor of Record will evaluate each student’s performance using the official School
Report, mailed or emailed directly from the Academic Director of the Partner Language
Institute, and a final essay or project presented in the target language, sent directly from
the student. Students will receive a performance grade based on the following components
and values.

Credit will be awarded only after all requirements have been met. It is your responsibility
to ensure that your study abroad program consists of a minimum of 20 hours of classroom
study per week and that you study for the number of weeks required for the number of
academic credit hours sought.
Students attending Partner Language Institutes where no home-stay opportunities are
available will be required to attend school-sponsored cultural activities in the afternoon
four times per week to compensate for the lack of the home-stay experience. Students may
(on rare occasions) be asked to complete outside class homework taken directly from
Multinational Academic Program Description, Brookhaven College
16
Brookhaven College adopted textbooks or their ancillaries in order to master the grammar
concepts listed in the class syllabus for each level. Where necessary, the Brookhaven
College Instructor of Record will consult with the Academic Director and instructors at
the Partner Language Institute.
On the basis of an evaluation of the portfolio containing the elements described
above, Brookhaven College will award you Credit by Examination for the courses
(and exact course numbers) you have sought with us. Course names and numbers
along with a letter grade will be posted to your Brookhaven College credit transcript.
The credits will be earned at Brookhaven College and NOT by transfer from any
other institution.
The School Report from the Partner Language Institute
In order for a student to be assigned a grade for credit, the Academic Director of the
Partner Language Institute (the Language School Abroad) must supply the following
progress and evaluative information for each student:
An official School Report from the Partner Language Institute must be sent by email or
postal mail. It should contain the following information:
1. Start and end dates
2. Total number of classroom hours provided in the program
3. The lodging option: homestay or non-homestay
4. Numeric score (between 0 and 100) for each of the following:
 Average Attendance Score
 Average Participation and Oral Proficiency Score
 Average Tests and Homework Score (tests and evaluation instruments
created by the Partner Language Institute)
The School Report must be sent directly from the Academic Director (or designee) of
the Partner Language Institute to:

Final Project: for Students of Arabic, Chinese, Japanese and Russian
For courses at the Beginning Level (1300, 1311, and 1312), you will need to complete a
final project consisting of an oral presentation in the Target Language as part of the
requirement to obtain credits. This should be recorded as a two-three minute audio or
audio/video file in which you describe your study experience. Possible topics include your

personal encounters with the culture, people, history, geography or other areas that might
have been especially memorable or remarkable to you and your own experience. In order
to submit the file, follow directions supplied for submission of final essays below.
For courses at the Intermediate Level (2311 and 2312), a final essay in the Target
Language will need to be submitted (see below). For these languages the essay may be
handwritten rather than typed. However, for hand-written essays, the minimum number
of pages per course is TWO. The essay can be submitted by postal mail, fax, or email.
Final Essay: for Students of French, German, Italian, Portuguese and Spanish
As part of the requirements to obtain academic credit, you will need to complete a final
essay in the language of your program – the Target Language – in which you describe your
study experience. Possible topics include your personal encounters with the culture,
people, history, geography or other areas that might have been especially memorable or
remarkable to you and your own experience. In the essay you should be sure to utilize the
grammar and vocabulary that you have learned in class and in practice with your host
family and others to demonstrate the depth and breadth of your language learning.
The final essay, written in the Target Language about your own language immersion
abroad experience must have the following characteristics: 1) typed and double-spaced, 2)
“Times Roman” font no greater than 12-point, 3) 1” margins, and 3) a cover sheet with the
following information: name, student ID number, course title(s) and credit hours, and
dates of program. For the first course, the essay must be a minimum of one (1) full, typed
page in length. For each additional course you are taking, you should submit one additional
page. So, if you are seeking credits for two courses, you will need to submit an essay of at
least two full pages in length, and for three courses an essay of at least three full pages,
etc.
A word of caution: Grades for essays that do not meet these requirements will
automatically be lowered substantially. You should write your essay four-five days
prior to the end of your program at our Partner Language Institute and send it by 5 p.m.
on the last day of classes, typically a Friday.

You will receive an email confirming receipt of your Final Essay or Project in good
order. If we have not received your essay by two weeks after the conclusion of your
language course, a grade of Zero (“0”) will automatically be assigned to that component of
your grade. Be sure to keep or send a copy to yourself in case you need to re-submit it after
returning home.
The essay will be evaluated and graded according to the following Final Essay Evaluation
Rubric. Note that Final Projects will be evaluated by the SAME rubric, with the following
modification: the “MECHANICS” component for 5 points will be replaced by a
‘PRONUNCIATION” component for 5 points.

Official Brookhaven College Transcripts
Grades will be posted to the student’s Official Academic Transcript as A*, B*, C*, D*,
or F*. On the reverse side of the transcript the “Explanation of Grades, Grade Point
Averages, and Other Symbols” states that the “*” symbol indicates “Credit earned by
other means” – in this case, Institutional Credit by Examination at Brookhaven
College.
Because these are non-transferred credit hours that have been earned at
Brookhaven College, the grades will be factored into the calculation of the student’s
Grade Point Average (GPA). It is essential that students verify in advance that their
home university will accept credits earned by examination at other institutions in
order to ensure that the credits will indeed transfer.
**Grades will be posted and transcripts will be available generally within 45 days after the
following requirements have been met:
1) Required transcripts are received at the Brookhaven College Office of Admissions
2) MAP fees are paid to the Brookhaven College Cashier
3) The Student Final Essay or Project is received in the Brookhaven College World
Languages Office
4) The Partner Language Institute School Report is received in the Brookhaven
College World Languages Division
Students who choose to depend on the credits generated by the MAP to meet
graduation requirements must carefully plan their program dates to allow ample
time for grades to be posted.
Students can request free transcripts by going to http://www.BrookhavenCollege.edu

Financial Aid for Participation in the Multinational Academic Program for Study
Abroad
The Multinational Academic Program for Study Abroad is a full-time, academic program
that results in college credit being awarded upon successful completion. At that time the
student will be awarded academic credit in a course or courses at the undergraduate
freshman (1000 series courses) or sophomore (2000 series courses) level for up to 17
total credit hours per fall, spring, or summer semester.
Multinational Academic Program Description, Brookhaven College
21
However, during the program, the student will be registered for ONLY one credit hour – a
course called "Directed Studies/Study Abroad." This means that the student will NOT be
classified as a full-time student at Brookhaven College with regard to current credit-hour
enrollment.
However, every Multinational Academic Program for Study Abroad opportunity is a
Full-Time Program in the sense of credit-course outcomes and contact hours (requiring a
minimum of 20 instructional hours per week, generally, at one week per credit hour
sought). Once the student has completed the Multinational Academic Program, we will
evaluate the student’s portfolio of work: a final essay that the student will have produced
and a School Report that the Partner Language Institute will provide. On the basis of the
student’s portfolio assessment, we will award academic Credit by Examination for the
courses for which the student has sought credit through MAP at Brookhaven College. The
Coordinator for the MAP Study Abroad Program is able to write an explanation of the
foregoing to help students seek financial aid at their home institutions. However, it will be
up to the student to ensure that the home university finds this explanation acceptable.
Title IV of the Higher Education Act ensures that undergraduate students can apply
federal aid to any approved study abroad program. Several elements are involved in
determining approval of the program, including that the program is pre-approved for
credit at the home institution and that there is a Consortium Agreement detailing which
institution will administer the aid (the appropriate choice is the school where you are
enrolled as a degree-seeking student). It is important to coordinate the approval process
with your registrar and financial aid office and any other departments on your campus
involved in academic credit approval. We can complete a Consortium Agreement on your
behalf to help you apply for financial aid (such as loans or grants) from your home
university. You will need to obtain the Consortium Agreement form from the Financial
Aid or Study Abroad Office at your university.
Consortium Agreements should be sent as follows:

Since the Brookhaven College program you are interested in attending is a StudyAbroad/Individualized Distance Learning program, we can admit you as a student,
register you for classes, and the Study Abroad Coordinator can send an estimated Cost of
Attendance for the MAP to you, your financial aid office, or other designated recipient.
That is usually the type of information that universities need in order to disperse financial
aid to students who participate in study abroad programs that are provided or
administered by other institutions.
Multinational Academic Program Description, Brookhaven College
22
We can also help you to apply an AmeriCorps Education Award
(http://www.nationalservice.gov/programs/americorps/segal-americorps-education-award), if you
have already earned one, to the MAP Study Abroad experience. Please email
[email protected] for more information.
If Brookhaven College is your home institution, you are a degree-seeking student here
(with a degree plan on file), and you wish to apply for any sort of financial aid that is
available at or administered by Brookhaven College, you should contact our financial aid
office at [email protected].

Health and Safety Information
Health and Safety information, including hazards associated with your travel/study
destination, may be available from the United States Centers for Disease Control at
www.cdc.gov. Additional information, including any applicable travel advisories related to
the travel destination, is provided by the United States Department of State and is
available at www.travel.state.gov.
International Insurance Coverage
Students are strongly advised to purchase an international insurance plan for coverage
during periods of travel or study outside the United States. There are a variety of
international plans, none of which are specifically endorsed by Brookhaven College. The
most important components of an adequate International Medical Insurance Policy
include 1) Emergency Medical Treatment, 2) Emergency Medical Evacuation, and 3)
Repatriation of Remains. Plans of this type may be available at websites such as
www.insuranceabroad.com or at http://hthstudents.com. Students are also advised to
purchase the ISIC (International Student Identity Card) available at
http://statravel.com.
MAP Fees and Refunds
Any costs or fees associated with your stay abroad, such as tuition paid to the Partner
Language Institute, home stay charges, etc., are completely separate and unrelated to
Multinational Academic Program for Study Abroad fees paid to Brookhaven College.
Multinational Academic Program Description, Brookhaven College
23
If for some reason you are unable to begin your language program as planned, you must
send a cancellation request immediately to [email protected]. Requests for
any refund of Brookhaven College program fees will be considered only if the request is
received prior to the starting date of your program. No refunds of Brookhaven College
MAP fees at will be given after the start date of your program abroad.
