As you prepare to complete your
academic experience, much
preparation is necessary. You want
your journey at Tougaloo to be an
adventurous success. You want to
ensure a smooth transition from
high school with no major to
college declaring a major.
Likewise, you want all of your
learning tools to be state-of-the-art,
ready for any learning adventure,
opportunity and challenge.
So, for the next four weeks or 20 days,
spend 1 hours per day reshaping the
habits of your mind for new, exciting,
challenging and rewarding ventures.
This presentation offers preparations for
your academic success at Tougaloo
College. We have found several of the
best college websites and links to help
you continue and reinforce your skills
as well as enhance your learning
experience and your academic
confidence.
Tougaloo Eaglet Experience (TEE)
When used daily, these
web sites will stimulate
skills learned in high school
and will refocus those skills
toward college needs. So,
get ready for daily ventures
in acquiring new mindhabits.
Before You Start/After You Finish
BEFORE you START, buy a composition
book to write responses to your novel,
record new vocabulary words, make
notes from the websites, and write
progress notes.
AFTER you FINISH the 20-day Tougaloo
Eaglet Experience, BRING your Novel
and Writing Journal to your college
reading course. We will review your
collection of materials and you will
complete a Tougaloo Eaglet Experience
Survey.
First Day
• Today, you can continue your transition to college
academics by selecting one of the novels from the
reserve list in the library. Do not forget to record
your readings in your composition book.
• Hurston, Zora Neale. Their Eyes Were Watching
God.
• Gaines, Earnest. A Lesson Before Dying.
• Poitier, Sidney. The Measure of a Man. San
Francisco: Harper Collins, 2000.
• Begin your 20 minutes of Sustained Silent Reading
(SSR) immediately. Respond in your Journal using
one of the Ten Ways to Stimulate Your Critical
Thinking and Writing, taken from The Reading
Teacher’s Book of List, after completing your daily
20 SSR minutes, 15 for Novel and 5 for Aesop
Fables.
Ten Ways
1.
React – Indicate passages that cause you to react in a
certain way, during your reading and after your reading.
2. Describe – relate a descriptive view of a passage.
3. Question – List questions that occurred, during and after
your reading.
4. Compare – Indicate likenesses of a passage and your
experience or what you know and compare them.
5. Contrast – Indicate differences of a passage and your
experience.
6. Think of Examples – Indicate examples related to an
example in the book.
7. Ask “WHY?” – Inquire about passages that peak your
curiosity.
8. Ask “HOW?” – Inquire about passages that cause you to
look at the way an event happens.
9. Synthesis – Indicate the components or the “break
down” of an idea, reading, et cetera.
10. Judge – Indicate your critique of the book.
PREPARE YOURSELF
• Today, you will learn something about yourself.
You will visit the Diablo Valley College Online
Learning Style Survey for college students. The
DVC Online survey will help you, as a student, to
identify your personal learning style. This survey
will help you determine a productive manner for
study, one that matches your style. After you
complete the survey, read and learn about
helpful learning study/strategies for your
learning style.

habits. Indicate your best study method.

Each day you will learn three new words from the website
wordsmith. This will help you to increase your vocabulary.

• Each Day, you will visit the website Test
Prep Review, type in Nelson-Denny and
complete a practice test. This will help you
gain an insight into the thinking needed for this
experience at Tougaloo College.
• Each Day, you will read and choose one of
the websites listed. You will complete the
activities for the selected website. You will
record what you learned from that site and
your progress in your Journal.

Each Day, you will start your venture with the following
activities:
• Learn three new words from wordsmith.
• Record the words and definitions in your Journal.
• Use learned words in your writing and speaking.
Each Day, you will begin your venture by reading for
20 minutes from the novel you selected and bought,
and from the Aesop suggested readings.
• Write a response to your daily readings. (A response
is not a summary of the reading; rather it lets your
readers know how and why you connected with the
author’s words. You can use the Ten Ways to
Stimulate Your Critical Thinking and Writing indicated
earlier.)
• Date your response, write a title and use your best
writing.
Complete the following daily
• Word of the Day
• The Wordsmith Site allows you to complete
the activity of learning three new words
daily. You can learn the word of the day
and two other words from the archives.
• Just click on the URL and complete your
Words of the Day. Come back to this

period. The other readings are online. You
are to use five (5) minutes to read an
Aesop Fable of your choice daily.

4. The World of Math Online offers select subjects: Basic
Math, Pre-Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and other math
areas. Resources offer: cool tools, formulas, test
preparations, study tips and many other fun-type
explorations of math. By completing one of the sites, you
are increasing your chances for making a smooth
transition from high school learning to college learning.

choose a math skill area to practice. This site has
something for all levels of math from the basic to the notso basic.

5. Texas Southern University offers a Career Planning and
Placement Center providing tools that will enhance your
abilities in every respect. By completing exercising, you
can review the cover letter, writing your resume,
dressing professionally and other services to
enhance your readiness for success. These skills will
prepare you for your Mission: Involvement course.

and open to complete an activity of your choice. The
purpose of the center is to help students gain
information for employment opportunities.

activities to complete.

7. The Longman Vocabulary Website gives you the ability to
look up definitions of words, practice spelling skills, learn
about homonyms and antonyms, listen to pronunciations of
difficult words, test your knowledge of various words with
flashcards, and explore other vocabulary-building
resources.

assessment in your Journal. Bring your
Journal and other work to class with
you.
