Please scan any photos and email them to: [email protected]. Indiana Mayflower Historian Laura Smith, DVM will present a program on the use of DNA in genealogy for the spring 2016 Indiana Mayflower luncheon. Until recently, genealogy has focused on using the "paper trail" to document ancestry. This means spending time looking at census records, getting birth and death certificates, and going to libraries, archives, and courthouses to find the trail that was left behind by your ancestors. With the popularity of genealogy websites like ancestry.com and familysearch.org, one can also have access to original documents and family trees of other genealogists. DNA has added one more unique tool to the genealogist's toolbox that can leave off where the paper trail ends. It can help a person who was adopted find their birth family. DNA can prove an African American’s ancestry prior to the Civil War. It can also give you your ethnic origins from 5001000 years ago. Come see how to use DNA to explore your family tree. Menu for the Spring luncheon Starter course: House Salad with Olive, Cucumber & Tomato and White Balsamic Vinaigrette, Rolls & Butter Main course: Chicken en Phyllo Stuffed with Cranberry and Brie, baked in Phyllo, topped with Grain Mustard Cream, Maple Whipped Redskin Potato, Asparagus and Grape Tomato Garnish. Dessert: Ice Cream Sundaes with Scooped Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, Hot Fudge, Butterscotch and Traditional Ice Cream toppings. Children’s menu will include fruit cup, chicken fingers with fries and an ice cream sundae for dessert. Coffee/Tea/Lemonade Cost of the luncheon will be $30 for adults or $15 for children (10 and under). Pre-paid reservations are due by Monday, April 11 and can be mailed to Pat Scahill, 16432 Clarks Hill Way, Westfield, IN 46074. Page 2 Governor’s Message By Laura Stocker—Indiana Society Governor C elebrate 100 years of The Indiana Society of Mayflower Descendants! A charter was issued in March 1916 by the General Society of Mayflower Descendants (GS) to form a society within the State of Indiana. Thirty-five charter member names were scribed on the original document. Since that time almost 1500 additional members have proven lineage to Pilgrim ancestors and joined our society. The original, 100-year-old, charter document is on display at membership meetings. If you’ve never had a look, now is a wonderful time to take a few moments and appreciate our history. Our centennial anniversary would not be complete without a celebration. It seems we’ve prepared for months, even years, to host the 2016 national meeting of the General Board of Assistants. Within that meeting, a dinner event is planned for Friday, September 9, 2016. All society members with their guests are encouraged to attend and share this milestone with GS members who will be here from across the nation. It will be at The Columbia Club on Monument Circle in Downtown Indianapolis beginning with a reception at 6:00 p.m., followed by dinner at 7:00 p.m. Valet parking is available at The Columbia Club and a reasonably priced, self -park garage is located at 20 North Pennsylvania, just two blocks away, behind the Hilbert Circle Theater. The cost for the “Welcome Reception and Indiana’s 100 th Anniversary Dinner” is $50 per person. Historical reviews and a state-of-the-society address by Governor General Lea Filson will be included in the evening events. The opportunity to share our history, meet national officers, and welcome members who have come from nationwide to Indiana is quite special. Your Board looks forward to the evening with great excitement. Please join us! All reservations/registrations for GBOA meeting events must be sent to GS offices in Plymouth, MA. The address is GBOA 2016, P.O. Box 3297, Plymouth, MA 02361-3297. For our Indiana Society members and their guests who wish to attend our celebratory DINNER EVENT ONLY, do not use the registration form in the Mayflower Quarterly, but rather use the abridged form included in this newsletter. The normal registration fee for GBOA events has been waived for Indiana Society members and their guests attending the DINNER EVENT ONLY. An early deadline of July 24 th has been requested by the GS. If you have any questions about the event or registration process, drop me an e-mail at [email protected]. I will gladly help. The hope is for a wonderful 100 th anniversary celebration. Please plan to come! It is being held July 15 & 16 at the Marriott East in Indianapolis, IN with preconference events July 14th. This event will feature nationally known speaker Cece Moore, known as the genetic genealogist. Her specialty is using DNA to pick up where the traditional paper trail has left off. She has been featured on the PBS shows Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates, Jr and the Genealogy Roadshow. The conference will have more than 30 sessions that range from emerging technology and sources online for genealogists to using traditional sources. This year legal genealogy will also be a focus. There is also an exhibit hall that will feature books on genealogy and history, many lineage societies, and information on how to find out about your military ancestor. We will need volunteers to man our exhibitor booth. Contact Laura Smith at [email protected] or Brigitt Caito at [email protected]. The IHS is still planning the event but typically registration begins in March.
