It is a tax concession designed by the Federal government to assist employers in rural and remote areas to attract and retain staff. 'Home energy expenses' include the use firewood, oil, coal, gas and electricity for lighting, heating and/or cooling your home. Who is eligible? Employees who work for an employer who provides the Remote Area Housing benefit. This is an employer provided benefit so please check with your organisation before forwarding your claim. What does this benefit mean to me? This benefit is based on the lighting, heating and cooling costs incurred by you for residential purposes, in addition to the standard Remote Area Housing benefit for mortgage interest or residential rental costs. You can receive an additional benefit of 50% of the annual total value of your home energy expenses. For instance, if your gas/ electricity totalled $1,500 for last year (1st January – 31st December inclusive) you can package an additional $750. To apply for this benefit you must complete the declaration form and submit evidence to support your claim; i.e. invoices or receipts for all home energy expenses incurred from 1st January to 31st December of that year. This is over and above your normal salary packaging amount. Note: The Remote Area Housing - Home Energy Expenses benefit will need to be re-applied for each year. This benefit does not roll over from one year to the next, so it is important that you forward to Salary Options a new declaration form – along with invoices for the previous year – by February to allow time for processing before the new FBT year begins (1st April). If you fail to do so, this benefit will stop being deducted from your salary packaging. What are the rules? Like most benefits offered by the government there are rules: 1. Your employer must be in a remote area and you must live in a remote area. 2. The invoices/receipts you wish to claim must be for your main place of residence. 3. You must live in the house, so it can’t be an investment property or a holiday house. 4. You must sign a declaration to say all the above items are true. How do I apply? You need to keep evidence of actual expenses incurred during a calendar year (i.e. the invoices/receipts you have paid from 1st January to 31st December). Once you have completed the Remote Area Housing - Home Energy Expenses declaration form, forward the form along with proof of expenses (paid tax invoices/receipts) to Salary Options. Salary Options will calculate the total amount eligible to be claimed for reimbursement, and send you a confirmation of your updated, ongoing packaging amounts.
