Learning German via Harry Potter

Lesson Plan (German)
Session One: 1 hour
Aim:
For the pupils to develop the ability to talk about the topic of ‘Die Familie’ in
German with Year 10 class
Objectives:
To be able to say whether you do/don’t get on with your family
To be able to describe about their relationship with certain family
members
Desired Learning Outcomes:
Topic vocabulary
Enjoyment of language learning
Introduction:
(10 mins)
Mindmap on board of various family members the class could think of and quick
recap of the adjectives that they had learned in the previous lessons to describe
the family (see slide 1 of powerpoint attached)
Starter:
(10 mins)
Put class into pairs. Each pair come up and pick pre-written description of a
particular family relationship out of a hat. They have 1 minute to confer quickly
and decide how they will act this out to the rest of the class. Rest of class must
guess which description (on the powerpoint) matches the scene best.
Activity One:
(10mins)
Set phrases that enable the class to say whether they do/don’t get on with family
through use of powerpoint (slides 2-6)
‘Ich verstehe mich gut’
‘Ich komme gut mit…aus’
‘Ich streite mich mit‘
(Also a bit of grammar and explain what happens after the use of preposition mit)
Activity Two:
(5 mins)
Get class to write three sentences about three of their family members.
Activity Three:
(20mins)
Hand out ‘Letter to Dumbledore’ worksheet (attached). Read through as class
picking out any unknown vocabulary. Get pupils to take turns so that they can
practise their pronunciation in the target language. Using the same model as the
example, the class must write their own response to Dumbledore, giving reasons of
why they would like to accept/reject the offer to study at the school in relation to
the way they get on with their family at home.
Extra help: On whiteboard is slide 7 of powerpoint that offers useful key phrases
for describing family relationships…read through with class before they start task
Extension: If pupil finishes writing about their own family, they must choose a
character from the novel and write about their family from the character’s
perspective.
Activity Four:
(5mins)
Pupils volunteer to read out their letters to Dumbledore at the front of the class
(again giving them the opportunity to practise spoken use of target language) and I
Teacher
Evaluation:
give feedback at the end, making suggestions for improvement where possible.
Collect in letters so that I can mark and give written feedback.
This lesson plan gives the scope for a range of different learning styles. It begins
with a recap of the previous lesson which will jog the pupils’ memory of the
current theme. The starter is then practical and allows the class to be creative as
it links acting to written language. Afterwards, the pupils learn how to create
such sentences about their own family which they will be write down and be able
to use as reasons for the acceptance/rejection of the offer to study at Hogwarts
in the next part of the lesson. This is a way of scaffolding the tasks. The use of
ideas from the popular novel ‘Harry Potter’ adds familiarity to the lesson and will
hopefully allow pupils to see that language learning doesn’t always have to be so
‘foreign’. The main activity also offers an extension to those that finish writing
about their own family quickly, as they must then put themselves into the
position of another character from the novel e.g. Ron talking about his
relationship to his 6 siblings. The closing of the lesson ensures that there is some
moderation of the amount of work that the pupils have completed in the given
time. It also adds an oral dimension to the lesson as the pupils will have the
chance to speak German out loud and therefore an opportunity to develop their
confidence in spoken use of the language. The written feedback will also give
them concrete feedback and important grammar/language tips.
Harry Potter
