GENERAL MARKET COMMENTARY: Students weren`t the only

GENERAL MARKET COMMENTARY: Students weren't the only ones to be on vacation
this summer, as it appears that stock markets around the world joined them. The phrase
'the dog days of summer' seemed to be particularly appropriate for the month of
August! It seems as if every news headline is either very positive or very negative,
with much focus on today and very little on the longer term.
Rather than try to compete with full-time financial journalists and economists, let me
take a little different approach, which you can apply not only to investing, but to many
other areas of your life as well! Let's call it the FOUR REASONS WHY YOU
SHOULDN'T WORRY!
Worry is essentially a control issue. It's trying to control the uncontrollable. Worry
NEVER solves anything - it is stewing without doing!
1. Worry is unreasonable: If it's not going to last, don't worry about it. To worry about
something you CAN change is stupid. To worry about something you CAN'T change is
useless. Either way, it's unreasonable to worry.
2. Worry is unnatural: There is only one thing in all of God's creation that worries human beings. Does your dog worry? How about your grass? Hmmm . . . maybe that
means we don't trust God!
3. Worry is unhelpful: It does NOT change anything. It's like sitting in a rocking chair - a
lot of activity and motion, but no progress. Worry doesn't change anything except you,
it makes you miserable!
4. Worry is unnecessary: Life is full of choices. You can choose to eat well and exercise,
or not. You can choose to stay up late and need three coffees before 9:00 am, or not.
You can choose to worry, or not. Our 'needs' are pretty basic, air, food, clothing &
shelter. Worry is not on the list!
If you are a real worrier and can't kick the habit, email me and I will give you four steps
to stop worrying.

SCHOOL IS IN! Governments keeps telling us that inflation is very low. However, postsecondary education costs seem to keep rising! Has your child/grandchild been able to
find a good summer job? No wonder student debt is exploding.
We can help! Part of the solution is taking advantage of RESPs. If you have children (or
grandchildren) that are 15 years of age or younger, the government provides a 20%
grant on the first $2,500 per child per year! Especially for younger children,
investing part of their allowance (and explaining why) might be a wise use of money and
may encourage them to save some of their own when they start working. Students get
very little teaching on how to handle money, but it can be an incredibly rewarding use
of your time. If you would like to increase your monthly contributions, top up your RESP, or
start one, please call or email Vanessa at [email protected].
PLANNING: The main purpose of any kind of planning is to reduce worry about future
events! Nothing ever goes completely as planned, but having a plan gives you a much
better place to make choices from. It's like the Boy Scouts motto "Be Prepared"!
It seems many people are overwhelmed by the thought of a 'comprehensive' financial
plan, but it's really not that daunting. It's really as simple as planning a trip! Where do
you want to go (what's most important to you), how much time and money you have
available (your current situation), and then making choices that will get you as close to
your 'dream trip' as your time and money allow.
So, if you'd like to plan 'the trip of your life', call or email me.
As always, please give us a call if you have any comments, questions or concerns, or have family
or friends that need a trusted advisor. Enjoy the Fall!

PS: A few quotes, as usual.
I am an old man and have known a great many troubles, but most of them have never
happened. ~Mark Twain
Worrying is stupid. It's like walking around with an umbrella waiting for it to rain. ~Wiz Khalifa
Worry does not empty tomorrow of its sorrow, it empties today of its strength. ~Corrie ten Boom
Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your
heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? 27 And who of you by being
worried can add a single hour to his life? ~ Matthew 6:26-27 (NASB)
