54th Commission For Social Development (CSocD)
February 3-12, 2016 | UN Headquarters, NY
The Commission for Social Development (CSocD) is the key
United Nations body in charge of the follow up and
implementation of the Copenhagen Declaration and
Programme of Action. This year, we are preparing a
delegation to partake in the 54th session of CSocD under the
priority theme “Rethinking and strengthening social
development in the contemporary world”. OUR MEMBERS

10th Session of Committee on Enforced Disappearances
March 7-18, 2016| UN Geneva
At its forthcoming 10th session in March 2016, the
Committee on Enforced Disappearances will examine efforts
of the following countries to implement the International
Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced
Disappearance: Burkina Faso, Kazakhstan, Tunisia. The
Committee will also adopt lists of issues on the reports
submitted by Bosnia and Herzegovina and Colombia. OUR

60th Commission Status of Women (CSW60)
March 14-25, 2016 | UN Headquarters, NY
This year’s CSW is focused on Women’s empowerment and its
link to sustainable development. The Commission will
undertake a review of the elimination and prevention of all
forms of violence against women and girls based on the
agreed conclusions from the 57th session of the Commission.

49th Commission on Population and Development

The Session’s priority theme is focused on “Strengthening the
demographic evidence base for the post-2015 development
agenda”. Anyone interested in the Sustainable Development
Goals (SDGs) or formerly called Post-2015 Agenda should seek to
partake in this session of the UN Department of Economic and

International Women’s Day

March 8. This year’s celebration is hosted at our newly
established Muramid Mural Museum & Art Center in Oceanside.

High-Level Visit & Update | Syrian Crisis

Coordinator for the Syrian Crisis, Kevin Kennedy who is visiting
UNA-USA San Diego to update on the work of the UN in Syria and
its adjacent countries. He will focus on the humanitarian side of
the work as well as provide an overview on policy, operational
and security challenges that further heighten the humanitarian

International Yoga Day

The United Nations International Day of Yoga (UNIDY) was
established and observed for the first time last year at United
Nations in New York and in many major cities throughout the
world. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon noted during the
inaugural commemoration that, “the General Assembly has
recognized the holistic benefits of this timeless practice and its
inherent compatibility with the principles and values of the
United Nations.” Come join us for this free Yoga Event and
create with us a Culture of Peace!

Nations (MUN)? Here is your chance ! Join us and others that
want to “walk in the shoes” of a delegate to the Model UN
Security Council. You will be trained in the rule und procedures
and paired with an advisor to ensure you are well prepared for
simulation. We are looking for professionals – young or seasoned
– who are like you curious and interested in this unique
opportunity.
International Refugee Day

Every minute eight people leave everything behind to escape
war, persecution or terror. Many refugees are in exile to
escape the effects of natural or human-made disasters.
San Diego is one of the largest Refugee Communities in the
United States. For many years, UNA-USA San Diego
commemorates this day together with the Refugee Forum
highlighting our refugee community with a memorable
community event.

with Pop Culture Hero Coalition’s powerful panel! Topics
include conquering bullying, cyber-bullying, & LGBT-bullying,
racism, misogyny, and other forms of injustice. Learn strategies
for healing, advocacy, and inclusivity, as well as how media
affects our attitudes toward bullying, aggression. UNA-USA San
Diego as Panelist at this powerful event during Comic-Con.
United Nations Day

United Nations Day - UN Day - highlights, celebrates and
reflects on the work of the UN and its family of specialized
agencies. In 2016 our Chapter is celebrating its 70th
anniversary as the local ambassador to/for the UN. We will
celebrate this incredible milestone with high-level guests from
the City of San Diego, the United Nations, Rotary International
and other community partners. As every year, we will be
honoring selected community members and organizations with
the Eleanor Roosevelt Human Rights Award and Global Citizen
Award.

2nd Session on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
November 2016 | San Diego
This gathering in San Diego offers a platform for local civic
society, private sector, academia and activists to review the
global adoption of the SDGs in Sept 2015 at the UN by all
193 nations. As the SDGs will enter into national and local
legal frameworks, we will explore the U.S. National Action
Plan for this legal framework while learning how to
effectively approach City officials and Representatives to
Congress to ensure transparency and accountability in the
local implementation of the SDGs in its fifteen-year
process.
Human Rights Day
December 10, 2016 | San Diego
Human Rights Day marks the anniversary of the adoption
by the General Assembly of the landmark Universal
Declaration of Human Rights. This year’s observance also
marks 22 years since a bold step forward in the struggle to
make rights a reality for all: the adoption by the World
Conference on Human Rights of the Vienna Declaration
and Programme of Action. Come join us in our effort to
make a stand that human rights matter to all of us.
