Dr. Frank A. Thomas currently serves as Nettie
Sweeney and Hugh Th. Miller Professor of
Homiletics and Director of the Academy of
Preaching and Celebration at Christian Theological
Seminary in Indianapolis.
Dr. Thomas is in demand as a preacher, speaker,
and lecturer across the United States. He has been
the keynote speaker and lecturer at seminaries,
universities, and colleges including Boston
University, North Park Theological Seminary,
Christian Theological Seminary, Morehouse School
of Religion, American Bible College, and McCormick
Theological Seminary. In April 2003, he was inducted into the Martin Luther
King, Jr. Board of Preachers of Morehouse College.
Dr. Thomas holds a Ph.D. in Communications (Rhetoric) from the University of
Memphis, D.Min. degrees from Chicago Theological Seminary and United
Theological Seminary, a Master of Divinity degree from Chicago Theological
Seminary and a Master of Arts degree in African-Caribbean Studies from
Northeastern Illinois University. Prior to assuming his present post, Dr. Thomas
served for 15 years in Memphis, Tennessee, as the senior Minister of
Mississippi Boulevard Christian Church, one of the largest congregations in the
Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination.
Dr. Thomas’ newest book is the revised and updated version of They Like to
Never Quit Praisin’ God: The Role of Celebration In Preaching, considered by
many to be a classic. American Dream 2.0: A Christian Way Out of the Great
Recession, was released by Abingdon Press in August, 2012. Dr. Thomas also
edited, along with Rev. Martha Simmons, 9.11.01 African American Leaders
Respond to An American Tragedy (Judson Press, December 2001), which sold
out its first print run of 10,000 copies in two months.
Dr. Thomas is married to Joyce Scott Thomas, and they have a son, Anthony
William, and a daughter, Rachel Sojourner.
