Case Study: Food Deserts
Background:
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, Food Deserts are defined as urban
neighborhoods and rural towns without access to fresh, healthy, and affordable food. Instead of
supermarkets and grocery stores, these communities may have no food access or are served only by
fast food restaurants and convenience stores that offer few healthy, affordable food options. This lack
of access contributes to a poor diet, and can lead to higher levels of obesity, heart-disease and other
1
diet-related diseases
.
In many urban areas across the United States, from Detroit, to Chicago, to Los Angeles, to New York,
food deserts are posing a real threat to the health of thousands of Americans every day. The White
House estimates that as of 2010, over 23.5 million Americans, including 6.5 million children, currently
live in food deserts. The United States is one of the richest countries in the world, with a wealth of
resources and access to food. Yet, millions of people still lack the access to healthy and nutritious
food.
This case study will examine two major urban areas in the United States, Detroit and California (LA
and the Bay Area specifically), and look at the major health risks and socio-economic issues that are a
result of food deserts.
