Our Christmas project to raise funds to replace the 17 year old carpet in the common areas

January Devotional
Meaningless?
Meaningless?
“Everything is meaningless,” says the Teacher, “completely meaningless!”
Ecclesiastes 1:2
In January we bid farewell to the hustle and bustle of the Christmas season and move
forward to enjoy a brand new year. Sometimes, however, the seemingly abrupt end of
the holiday season has an effect on our thoughts about life in general. Perhaps at
times we might even feel the way Solomon did.
So I came to hate life because everything done here under the sun is so troubling.
Everything is meaningless—like chasing the wind.
Ecclesiastes 2:17
Before I knew Jesus I wondered a lot about life. I wondered what the purpose is in life.
I had everything this world could offer and yet felt like I had nothing. I wondered, like
Solomon, if life was simply “like chasing the wind.”
Ecclesiastes 2:24-25 tells us that without God, life has little meaning.
So I decided there is nothing better than to enjoy food and drink and to find
satisfaction in work. Then I realized that these pleasures are from the hand of God. For
who can eat or enjoy anything apart from Him?
When God walked into my life, He brought with Him a sense of purpose and meaning.
I wanted to live for Christ and work in partnership with Him in ministry. Jesus led me to
work that brought me joy. The Holy Spirit put people into my path who touched my
heart – friends, family, church and so many others.
What can we do to help God make this world a better place? What exciting things can
we put in place that will help us look forward to each new day? Life holds many
wonderful challenges just waiting to be discovered. What are our interests? What
activities have we thought about trying but never did? Gardening? Art? Helping the
sick? Companioning a lonely person?
Each of us has unique God-given gifts that allow us to respond to needs in a way that
nobody else can. God longs for us to join Him in the work He’s doing and to benefit
from the joy we will surely receive as a result.
May God bring you joy and satisfaction in life. I pray that as 2014 unfolds you will
feast on all of the goodness He has to offer.

In Loving Memory
Of
Thomas “Doug” Bascombe
November 24, 1918 – December 19, 2013
Thomas “Doug” Bascombe was born in England on November 24, 1918. His
father Thomas was an engineer and his mother Henrietta was a homemaker.
Doug had a younger brother, Bill, who lives in New Westminster. Shortly after
Doug’s birth the family moved to Burnaby, BC.
Doug completed high school and technical training in construction. He then
joined the Royal Canadian Air Force and served overseas during World War 2.
While in England, Doug married and had one child, Ann, who lives in England.
The marriage ended at the conclusion of the war and Doug returned to Canada.
It was at a dance at Legion Hall that Doug met Margaret. They married in 1949
and had 3 children, Tom, Diane and Ed. Doug had 10 grandchildren. Family
was important to him. When he retired in 1983 Doug was a project manager for
Commonwealth Construction, a large international company. He was well
regarded in his field and called out of retirement a number of times to assist in
jobs that required his expertise.
Doug was always outgoing. He played a lot of sports in his younger days and
continued to refer to himself as an athlete. Soccer was his game of choice but
he also enjoyed track during his school years. When he wasn’t playing sports
Doug would enjoy a good hockey game on television. He took pleasure in the
out-of-doors and, whenever possible, would fish and hunt. Keeping busy was
never a problem for Doug as he found pleasure in a round of golf, gardening
and building things. He kept up-to-date on what was happening in the world by
reading the daily newspaper.
During his time here at Buchanan Doug loved to walk and speak with the people
he met on his journey. He had a good sense of humour and enjoyed being
playful. When children or dogs were around Doug would light up. Doug had a
faith in God and was connected with the Anglican Church. He found hymn music
comforting.
Our prayers are with Doug’s family in these days.
