MOMENTUM CONSERVATION EXAMPLE PROBLEMS 1. Two Pool balls collide head-on. Both have a mass of 0.1 kg. Initially the cue ball is moving at 5 m/s, and the 5-ball is moving at 3 m/s. If the cue ball is only moving 1 m/s after the collision, how fast is the 5-ball moving? 2. A 5 kg ball initially going +14 m/s, collides with a 3 kg ball at rest. After the collision the 5 kg ball is traveling +6 m/s. How fast is the 3 kg ball going? 3. Little Johnny fired his toy cannon initially at rest. The cannon ball (mass of 40 g) shot out at 22 m/s. If the cannon has a mass of 1 kg, what is its recoil velocity? 4. After just getting her license, Amanda crashed into the back of a parked car. She was going 18 m/s. If her car has a mass of 1000 kg, and the parked car had a mass of 1150 kg, at what speed will the wrecked mass move along after the collision if we assume the cars stick together?
