JABAL FARASAN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL, RABIGH - KSA VALUE BASED QUESTIONS – CLASS VIII ENGLISH FOR CLASS NOTES ANNE BAKES A CAKE 1. ‘Anne fell promptly in love with Mrs Allan. She had discovered another kindred spirit.’ Just like Anne quite a few of us find people a great source of inspiration. How does having these kindred spirits help us in leading a better life? Answer: A kindred spirit a person whose interests and way of thinking is similar to your own. Such people can develop career aspirations, educational goals, and behaviour. They influence others to do something good to the society. SAVING THE GHARIAL 2. Do you think humans have the right to endanger the species of this planet? What are the chief causes for our negligence in protecting animals? Answer: No, humans have no right to endanger the lives of other species unnecessarily. Some reasons why animals become endangered are: Destruction of Habitat—Humans destroy precious habitat—the natural environment of a living thing— when they fill swamps and marshes, dam rivers and cut down trees to build homes, roads and other developments. Pollution—Oil spills, acid rain and water pollution have been devastating for many species of fish and birds. Hunting and Fishing—Many animals are over-hunted because their meat, fur and other parts are very valuable. Exotic Species-When animals or plants arrive into a new habitat from a foreign place they sometimes carry diseases that the native species can’t fight. These species also prey on the native species. When a people falls into servitude, “so long as it clings to its language, it is as if it held the key to its prison” What is meant as prison and which is the key? Answer: Losing one’s freedom to one’s enemies in war can be like being in a prison. Preserving one’s identity and culture is essential. Even if the enemy has conquered the land it must be proved that the enemy cannot conquer the spirit of the people. So people must show their spirit of togetherness by not giving up their language. They must use their language as a key to fight against the enemies and free themselves from the prison. CAN ANIMALS REASON? 4. Imagine you are Kanzi. You have learnt to talk to human beings. What would you like to speak to them about their behaviour towards animals? Answer: We chimps are 98% humans. Our population has decreased in the Ivory Coast. Our threats: habitat destruction, hunting, and disease. Human population has encroached in our areas; cutting down of trees, hunting in forests of Africa; we are hunted for our meat. Contact with humans has exposed us to diseases. Our communication: sounds, gestures, body postures and facial expressions. Long distance communication through hoots and thumping trees/we pant to say hello and grunt to say sad, use our fists a Our tools: strip a stem of its leaves and use the stem to “fish” for termites. use rocks as hammers and anvils to pound open nuts, use leaves as napkins and sponges, use sticks to probe or break open beehives for honey, and manufacture spears to kill small mammals.
