VOLUME 25/NUMBER 1 VOLUME XXV/ NUMBER 17 January 4, 2015 APRIL 27, 2014 LAKE HOUSTON CHURCH OF CHRIST A Newsletter for Family and Friends …and a warm welcome to our visitors! Elders Predictions by Kevin Hahn JY Brown Orville Culpepper Bob Deister Mike Drachenberg Larry Heasley Pat Porter *Doug Sessions The prognosticators are out in full force with predictions for 2015. You can sort of sum up the predictions like this: it’s going to be hot, it’s going to be cold; prices will go down, prices will go up; there will be new technology; we will make new discoveries; well-known people will pass away; things will change. If you throw enough darts at enough targets, you’ll eventually hit a bulls-eye. We even have sayings about it: “Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.” And, “Even a broken clock is right twice a day.” However, guesses will never be the same as certainty. What can we be certain about? We can be certain those who are in Christ will live again. We don’t have to wonder if death is the end. We don’t have to wonder if God is powerful enough to overcome death. We don’t have to wonder if the last enemy, death, will win out in the end. We can be certain that our endurance will end in victory. We don’t have to wonder if it’s worth it. We don’t have to wonder if the cost of being a Christian is too high. We don’t have to wonder if this is as good as things get. We can be certain that unfaithfulness will have consequences. We don’t have to wonder if Jesus was telling us the truth about confessing or denying him before men. We don’t have to wonder if denying Christ in our lives will have an eternal effect. We can be certain that God is faithful. We don’t have to wonder if God is up to the task of handling 2015. We don’t have to wonder if he’ll be good or evil, forgiving or unforgiving, merciful or unmerciful, faithful or unfaithful. How can we be so sure? “The saying is trustworthy, for: If we have died with him, we will also live with him; if we endure, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he will also deny us; if we are faithless, he remains faithful—for he cannot deny himself” (2 Tim. 2:11-13). * Elder on call DEACONS Richard Ames – Building & Grounds Joseph Barela – Youth Michael Corley - Finance Mike Degge – Foreign Missions Mike Diaz – Benevolence Carl Holder – Domestic Missions Eric Johnson - Finance Ken Johnson – Building & Grounds Eric Kennedy - Visitation Don McAdoo – World Bible School Tim Mansell – Building & Grounds Darvin Mitchell – Worship Warren Roane - Education Ron Schultz – Involvement Billy Tharp – Building & Grounds MINISTERS Kevin Hahn – Preacher Cason Pearce – Associate Minister; Licensed Professional Counselor Our Record Bible Study 171 AM 377 PM 145 Wednesday n/a Contribution $17,679.97 Budget $15,238.00 PAGE |2 Those Needing Prayers Sympathy MEMBERS Don & Donna Pringle – Don is in Methodist Hospital. In previous articles I've highlighted disciples' generosity, boldness, and obedience. For the final article, I will focus on examples of disciples strengthening one another. In the Greek, another word for "strengthen" is "support." Throughout our lives, we all need to be strengthened & supported at various times and for various reasons. As Christians, God expects us to provide that strength & support for each other. We need strength to stay faithful and to grow to become more like Jesus. We need support to overcome temptation, tragedy, and difficult situations. The book of Acts is filled with examples of disciples strengthening one another; I have included several of them below. It is my prayer that you will read these verses and resolve to look for and take advantage of opportunities to strengthen and support members of your Christian family. I also sincerely hope that each of you will reach out for strengthening when you need it. "When they had preached the gospel to that city and had made many disciples, they returned to Lystra and to Iconium and to Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying that through many tribulations we must enter the kingdom of God" (Acts 14:21-22). "And Judas and Silas, who were themselves prophets, encouraged and strengthened the brothers with many word" (Acts 15:32). "As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance the decisions that had been reached by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem. So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and they increased in numbers daily" (Acts 16:4-5). "When he had landed at Caesarea, he went up and greeted the church, and then went down to Antioch. After spending some time there, he departed and went from one place to the next through the region of Galatia and Phrygia, strengthening all the disciples" (Acts 18:22-23).
