THE PRIMaRY IROil AND STEEL INDUSTRY IN CANADJ 1931.
The -ima y ir'ori and steel industry co1ers the operations oi plants engaged chiefly in the manu acturo of (a) pig iron, (b) feiro-alloys, (c) at. ci in Z ot2 and
direct steel c. .ngs, (d) rolled and drawn iron and steel p. oducts, such as bars,
strips, latos, s.iects, rails, wir. rods, strnctural shapes, ctc. }igures for 1931

for one ulant which produced cold roiled steel bars anj strips, and
two wic.. made cold drawn steel &;apas; formerly these concerns were cl.ssified in
the ctiri and foigings group.

Fctory sales from this in:ustry in 1931 were valued at 3c,911,245 Thich
was 50 per cent under the sales fiiie for 1933 and the lowest total reported for
any y, r si'ce 1925.
Thirty-.oeven firms in this group in 1951 operated 55 different iants or
depart nts including 4 pig iron, 2 ferro-alloy, and 28 Liteel larits and 19 roiling
and drwing milLs. The 22 viorks in Ontario accountod for 59 per cent of the total
sales for Canada, 6 in Nova Scotia to..k care of 22 per cext, 14 in Quebec, 15 per
cent, .-hlle the reniining 4 per cent was accounted for by 4 plants in Manitoba, 4 in
ri.ish Colunbia, and 3 in Alberta.
Capital ep1oyed in 1931 was given at $104,512,104, a decline of 7.5
Over 73 per cent of this total or sle 75,945,195 repreented the
wtl.ue of Lnds, buildings and equi;>:aerit.

The average number of employees was 8,026 as compared with 9,723 in 1230
and 11,218 in 1929. About 652 workers were employed in iron blast furnace dcpartnents, 195 in ferro-alloys, 2,945 on steel furnaces, and 4,254 in rolling mills.

Production of pig iron in Canada during 1931 totalled
423,036 long tons as compared with 747,178 tons in 1930, 1,080,163 tons in 1929, and
1 1 037,727 tons in 1928. -
Imports of pig iron during 1931 amounted to 7,912 long tons, a dec1in of
42 per cent from the total of 15,643 tons brought in during 1930. hxports were
recorded at 2,787 long tons as conpared the previous year.

The 4 producing companies had U blast furnaces available for use which,
if operaed at capacity, could produce 15 million tons of pig iron per year. Actua
production totalled 4 0. 038 tons so the furnaces were worked only at about 28 per
