Required Summer Assignment Overview:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Memorize the ions and atoms (names, symbols, charges, and colors if given).
Memorize the rules for naming ionic compounds.
Memorize the rules for naming acids.

Optional Summer Assignment- see other packet for great activities to prepare you for next
year!
For Assistance, Questions, or Guidance:
Please contact the IB Chemistry teacher (Mrs. Engle) via email at
[email protected] if you have any questions, concerns, or problems. Please be
patient when awaiting responses because Mrs. Engle checks her school email about once per
week during the summer months. Beginning August 24, Mrs. Engle will check her school email
5 – 6 times per week.
Assignment Part 1: Memorize the ions and atoms.
If you are provided with the name of an ion (or atom), then you will need to provide the symbol
and the charge of the ion (or atom) from memory. If you are provided with the symbol and the
charge of an ion (or atom), then you will need to provide the name of the ion (or atom) from
memory. You should consider making flashcards with the name of the ion (or atom) on one
side of the card and the symbol of the ion (or atom) on the second side of the card. If two
names are given, then you must know both names. If you make flashcards, then you will be
able to use them throughout the year. The names, symbols, charges, and characteristic colors
will have to be memorized on almost every chapter test throughout the year.

Assignment Part 2: Memorize the rules for naming ionic compounds.
(1) The cation (the positively-charged ion) is always written first in a chemical name or in a
chemical formula.
(2) The anion (the negatively-charge ion) is always written second in a chemical name or in
a chemical formula.
(3) When an anion has two possible names, always use the name that has the ending of –ide
for the chemical name.
(4) When writing a chemical formula, the charges of all the ions must have a sum of zero.
Assignment Part 3: Memorize the rules for naming acids.
(1) When the name of the anion (the negatively-charged ion) ends in –ide, then the acid
name begins with the prefix hydro-. The anion ending is changed to –ic acid.
(2) When the name of the anion (the negatively-charge ion) ends in –ite, then the acid name
does not begin with the prefix hydro-. The anion ending is changed to –ous acid.
(3) When the name of the anion (the negatively-charge ion) ends in –ate, then the acid name
does not begin with the prefix hydro-. The anion ending is changed to –ic acid.
