Safe Driving Guidelines & Agreement for Field Trips
As a driver for Rudolf Steiner School of Ann Arbor school-sponsored field trips, I understand that it is my
responsibility to transport students safely to the scheduled activity and back. To ensure the safety of the
students in my vehicle, I agree to abide by the following protocols:
 Ensure that my vehicle is in safe operating condition before the trip (i.e., brakes, seat belts, wipers, tires, lights, signals, fluid
levels, and horn are in good working order.)
 Ensure that everyone is wearing a seat belt whenever the vehicle is in motion.
 Make certain that I fully comply with the Michigan Child Restraint Law (see flyer in Front Office for details or go to:
www.dmv.org/mi-michigan/safety-laws.php)
 Drive within the posted speed limits.
 Use turn signals for all turns and traffic lane changes.
 Yield to all oncoming traffic and use caution when making left turns.
 Keep at least a 3-second interval between my vehicle and the vehicle in front of me when highway driving.
 Drive with extra caution during hours of darkness and when visibility is reduced or road conditions worsen.
 Never drive when sleepy.
 Take a rest break every three hours and alternate drivers when I need a break.
 Rotate driving duties with another responsible driver if the trip is longer than four hours.
 Never use a cell phone or other hand-held electronic device while driving; I will pull over, stop, put the car in park, and put
on the flashing lights before using such a device.
 Know what is around my vehicle; check mirrors frequently and look before backing up.
 Have directions to the destination and know where the rest stops/meeting places are before driving.
 Make certain that all passengers are accounted for and are back in the vehicle before leaving a location.
 Have the lead faculty cell phone number with me, along with those of other field trip drivers.
