Gator
Boots are
made for
Walkin’…
By Veronica Mosgrove
Tucked away on a street less traveled on Hwy. 1064 in Tickfaw is a
boot store, but not like anything you
would expect. In fact, if you blink
you would miss it.
“We started out as an alligator
farm,” said owner Michael R.
Ragusa. “We sold it last year to a
larger farm in the area.”
The gator farm was started in 1991
to sell the skins. By 1995, the
Ragusa’s and their business Circle
M Ranch were in the boot making
business.
“Eighty percent of our business
was selling raw skins to tanneries in
Italy and France for the European
watch strap market and for designers
such as Gucci and Hermes. The rest
of the skins we use to make boots,
shoes, belts, purses and all kinds of
accessories,” said Ragusa.
Ragusa says Circle M Ranch is the
only company in the area that tans

the skins then make the boots and
other products to the extent they do.
“You can’t go to a retail store and
find the variety of skins and sizes we
have available like you can here.”
Ragusa, who works with his
youngest daughter, Micah Ragusa
Bujol, says they’ve never been a traditional boot store but can make just
about anything. “We have boots in
stock but we also do special orders.”
Bujol says that they started out
going to trade shows and quickly
learned the alligator skins were
some of the most sought after. “For
people, they feel like it makes a
statement. It’s beautiful and in a
class by itself,” said Bujol. She
added, “People come in and they
can never decide what color to get. I
always suggest starting with a basic
black or brown for the first pair.
Those are basic colors that you
know you will get the most wear.”
Circle M Ranch has done little
advertising over the years. They
operated mostly through the original
Louisiana Sportsman show and
wholesale trade shows. Their business is also mostly word of mouth.
“Our customers today are customers
we’ve had for many, many years,”
said Ragusa.
Over the past eight to 10 years,
Circle M Ranch has felt competition
from stores that sell caiman crocodile from South America which is
much less expensive than American
alligator and in Ragusa’s opinion, an
inferior exotic that floods today’s
market. Ragusa recommends that
you make sure to request American
alligator if that is indeed what you
want because you may be getting
caiman crocodile.
Ragusa says approximately 400500,000 skins are processed each
year in Louisiana but says the
majority of those skins go to Europe.
Ragusa adds that reality television
shows that feature such wildlife

have made the meat more popular
than ever. “We sell the meat to most
all Don’s Seafood Restaurants in the
state of Louisiana. The alligator
industry in general is benefitting
from those types of shows.”
While the store isn’t flashy,
celebrities are familiar with Circle
M Ranch alligator skins. “Actor
Arnold Schwarzenegger visited the
store in 2012. He was filming a
movie here in Louisiana and heard
about us. He came in and bought
skins for both boots and other costume projects,” said Ragusa.
“Sylvester Stallone has also done
business with us.”
Even Saints coach Sean Payton is
the proud owner of a pair of Circle
M Ranch alligator boots. He got his
pair in 2008 prior to the New
Orleans Saints winning the Super
Bowl. “Only problem is, they sit on
his bookshelf on display because he
says they’re just too pretty to wear,”
laughed Bujol.
On average, a pair of boots costs
between $1,000 and $1,500 retail.
Circle M Ranch sells their boots
wholesale. Prices increase depending on whether the boots are already
in stock or need to be specially
made. They add that while the hornback is the more popular skin, the
belly of the gator is considered more
high end and gives a dressier look.
Besides the store in Tickfaw,
Circle M Ranch boots are also available at Adobe in Gonzales, La.,
Trail’s West in Nashville, Tn. And
Wild Bill’s in Dallas, Tx.

Strain urges livestock producers to enroll in disaster assistance program
Baton Rouge, LA (September 5,
2014) - Livestock producers who
experienced disaster-related losses since October 2011 are encouraged to apply for assistance by
Sept. 30, 2014.
"We urge these producers to
contact their local Farm Service
Agency (FSA) office as soon as
possible to check if they are eligible for assistance, if needed," said
Louisiana
Department
of
Agriculture
and
Forestry
Commissioner Mike Strain,
D.V.M.
If eligible, assistance must be
secured by Sept. 30 as congressionally mandated payment
reductions will take place for producers who have not acted before
that date.
Producers are encouraged to
register, request an appointment
or begin a Livestock Forage
Disaster Program application
with their county FSA office
before Oct. 1, 2014 to lock in the
current zero percent sequestration
rate.
As an additional aid to qualified
producers applying for LFP, the
Farm Service's Agency has developed an online registration that
enables farmers and ranchers to
put their names on an electronic
list before the deadline to avoid
reductions in their disaster assistance. This is an alternative to
visiting or contacting the county
office. To place a name on the

Disaster
Program list online, visit

Here’s a new insect to watch out for
LSU AgCenter Report
HAMMOND, La. – Louisiana
homeowners should be on the
alert for a small insect called
chilli thrips that feeds on the
young, tender parts of many
plants, according to Yan Chen, an
entomologist at the LSU
AgCenter Hammond Research
Station.
A pest of tropical and subtropical regions of the world, chilli
thrips first made an appearance in
Louisiana on Knock Out roses in
New Orleans in 2009.
They’re most obvious and prolific on roses, said LSU AgCenter
horticulturist Allen Owings.
They’re also common on camellias, plumbago and Indian
hawthorne as well as other ornamental plants.
Populations can be high in
September and October as temperatures cool off somewhat,
Owings said. “They’re typically
seen affecting new growth where
plants were pruned in late August
and early September or are having their fall growth flush.”
Unlike other thrips species that
are flower feeders, chilli thrips
feed on foliage and other plant
tissue, Chen said. Feeding causes
leaf, bud and fruit bronzing, and
damaged leaves curl, become distorted and fall from the plants.
On infested plants, the new
growth becomes stunted or
dwarfed and appears deformed.
Damaged buds become brittle
and drop.
“Chilli thrips prefer to feed on
young plant material, but all plant
foliage above ground is susceptible,” Chen said.
The adult female lays eggs into
the plant tissue along leaf veins,
terminal plant parts and buds.
New thrips hatch in six to eight
days under normal temperatures
or slightly longer in cooler temperatures.
In the first two lifecycle stages,
they actively feed on young, tender plant parts, Chen said.
Chilli thrips are quite small –
about 1/25 to 1/8 of an inch long.
Nymphs are pale yellow and
highly active while adults are
pale yellow with dark wings and

To be eligible for the program, one must be able to
answer yes to each of these
questions:
Has the farm been in your
family continuously for at least
100 years?
Does the farm have at least 10
acres of the original founder’s
land?
Is at least one owner a resident of Louisiana?
Does the farm produce at least
$1,000 in farming income annually?
**Tree farms have different
requirements.
Applications are currently

jump when they’re disturbed.
If you suspect chilli thrips, the
best way to identify them is to
place a sheet of white paper
beneath the leaves or flowers and
shake the plant. The thrips will
fall onto the paper.
Managing infestations is easier
if populations are detected early
before they cause severe damage,
Chen said. For homeowners,
treatment can be done with three
materials that are available and
very functional.
Acephate (Orthene), imidaclorpid and spinosad are the best controls. All can be applied as foliar
sprays, and imidaclorpid can be
used as a drench.
Chilli thrips are moved through
infested
plant
material.
Populations have been found in
retail outlets and on berries in
grocery stores, Chen said. The
adults are poor fliers, but they
can be found on over 250 ornamentals, vegetables and fruits.
