A
Work in a group. Imagine that you have decided to raise some money for your favourite charity. Brainstorm some
fundraising ideas.
B
Aria, Owen and Levi are discussing how to raise money for the charity Amnesty International. Skim the dialogue and
see if any of your fundraising ideas are mentioned. What other ideas do they suggest? Which of their suggestions do
you think is the best? Give reasons.
Aria
OK, so we need to come up with ideas to raise some money for Amnesty International. What do you reckon
we should do?
Owen Well, here’s an idea. 1 Let’s / What about organise a sponsored bike ride. Our friends could give us money
for every mile we cycle.
Levi
I don’t think that’s a great idea. I’m not really keen on cycling.
Aria
No. Neither am I. I don’t even have a bike! I think we 2 ought / should do something that involves
our classmates.
Levi
I’ve got it. 3 Why don’t we / How about having a ‘bring and buy’ sale? Get everyone to bring something in to
sell, like some old clothes or books they don’t want.
Aria
Mmmm. I’m not 4 convincing / convinced about that idea, Levi. I can’t imagine our classmates buying
second-hand stuff from each other.
OwenHey! 5 I think / I know, why don’t we hold a school disco? We could get in a band, organise some lighting,
get caterers to do some food, ...
Levi
That’s not a 6 bad / good idea, but I think it would be far too much work. We’ve got exams coming
up, remember.
Owen
Yeah, I guess you could be right. Mmm … I’m running out of suggestions. Aria, what do you think?
AriaWe 7 could always / always could hold a ‘no uniform’ day at school. Get students to pay, say £2, and they
can wear what they like.
Levi
Yeah. And the big advantage 8 on / of that is it’ll be really easy to sort out.
Aria
OK. Great. That’s decided then.
Owen
Hang on a minute! 9 Wouldn’t / Shouldn’t it be better to do something more original? We had a ‘no uniform’
day last year, didn’t we?
Aria
Yes, and it was a huge success. Nearly everyone took part and they raised heaps of money for the Red Cross.
Owen
Alright then. You’ve 10 persuaded / decided me. Shall we go and talk it over with the principal?
C
Read the dialogue again. Choose the correct words and expressions to complete it.
D
In your group, create a role-play dialogue similar to the one in B. Decide which charity you are collecting money
for and discuss at least four different ideas for raising funds. Make sure you use a range of expressions to agree
and disagree.
E
Read the responses to some suggestions. Use your own ideas to write the suggestions, using a variety of expressions.
1
Or alternatively, we could get out a DVD. That would be much cheaper.
2
I’m not sure about that idea. I don’t really like heights to be honest.
3
Let’s put that idea to one side for a moment. The forecast says it’s probably going to rain at the weekend.
4
Don’t you think that Friends of the Earth is a worthier cause?
5
I see why you’re saying that, but I reckon an e-petition would be much more effective.
